I don't think I ever really appreciated them until I had my hysterectomy. The nurses on the surgical ward did things for me I wouldn't ask my husband to do. And I've asked him to do A LOT. Those few days I was totally helpless and an emotional wreck but those wonderful women cared for me as only my mother had done before. When I apologized and felt embarrassed THEY took the time to soothe me and assure me that it was okay. Now that is a heart of gold! Then there was the incredibly fun nurse who sang I'm A Little Teapot with me. Even watching little ones when you're out and about can cheer you up. There was a delightful 3 year old little girl in the truck next to me at the gas station. One poor woman got her "dilation" checked about twenty times!
