CRUSHES

by Suzanne

We got to talking on someone's post the other day or week about first loves. This got me to thinking about my first crush. No, not the lastest media-blitzed boytoy made to appear all american or rebellious for the thrill of young girls. I mean that first guy who makes your heart do little flips every time you're near him? The one you have a secret crush on but would DIE if he ever found out, especially if he didn't think of you as anything more than a buddy or little sister. (That's Gidget over there with the big crush on Moon Doggy!)

See, I have great experience being everyone's little sister. I have a brother older than me by just a little over 2 years. Our yard was one alley, one neighbor's yard and a non-busy street from the local playground/park. AND we had a basketball hoop at the end of our large driveway and a yard big enough to play a pick up game of whiffleball. My brother played baseball, basketball, football, and had a slew of friends. Great, right? All the cute boys hung out at our house.

Unfortunately. They all considered me everyone's little sister. BIG SIGH.

(In Empire Records, Live Tyler's character has a crush on a teen heartthrob from her mother's era trying to make a comeback.)

But in the seventh grade I met Greg. He was my age, just moved to our city and his family had just started attending our church. He didn't know I was everyone's little sister and we actually just talked.....a lot. Now, most girls would've used this as an opportunity to flirt. EXCEPT, remember, I was everyone's little sister. I was as straightforward and direct in my conversations with guys (still am) and had no idea how to flirt. (Goodness this would make a great YA romance, wouldn't it?)

So as my heart would do little flips whenever we'd talk in person or on the phone, I slowly came to realize that Greg thought of me as a buddy. (More teen angst.) This to a teenaged girl is worse than being the little sister. In movies, the geeky buddy type girl transforms into this cute or raving beauty and the hero suddenly sees her as something different. In real life, they never see you as more than the buddy. (Trust me.)

But, back to my crush. This was no quick, meet him, know him, over him in a few weeks crush. It went on for years. My secret hope that got me through the bad times of middle and high school years. That special boy that I knew and few of my school friends knew, since he and I didn't attend the same schools, just the same church. BIG SIGH.

(That's Mary Stuart Masterson in Some Kind Of Love, the buddy with a crush on Eric Stoltz' character.)

We did church plays together. He was the drummer in the teen choir/band that put on performances in our church and others...I was the lead soprano. We did Vacation Bible School together...EVERY YEAR. We hung out on Sunday morning, Sunday nights, Wednesday nights and once a month on Fridays when the teen groups got together. I knew his plans for after graduation, he knew mine.

Slowly, over time, (as I seem to be a slow learner in the matters of the heart), my attraction for him dimmed and I realized we would never be more than friends. We moved on. We both found mates, married, had kids and lost touch with each other.

But to this day, when I think back to my teen years, my crush on Greg always plays a happy part of my memories. He was the first boy to break my heart, (even if he didn't know it), the first that let me NOT be the little sister, but a friend. The first to let me feel what it was like to love someone not related to me.

I've added some pictures of my favorite teen-crush movies. What are yours? Do you have a favorite teen-crush book? Did YOU have a secret crush? Tell us all about it, (first names only!)

Darn, Virginia, you beat me by a hair! I was hoping to get the rooster today because it's really hot here in California and I wanted him to spend the day fanning me. Sigh!

Great post, Suzanne. Ah, well I remember my first crush -- it lasted from 5th grade all the way through high school. Tommy L. The teachers always sat us aphabetically, so I ended up sitting beside him in elementary school and all the way through high school in home room.

He was so all-American handsome. But, of course, he didn't cast a glance my way. Uh, except to ask if I got a problem in math!

Anonymous said...

Sorry Jo, but I guess he will be fanning me today while I mow the lawn.

My very first crush was in grade school. But when I was about 13 I thought myself to be in love with Danny. This crush to me was real love. Oh he was so cute and I was struck on him most of the way through high school. Its funny I haven't thought about him for several years and I am not sure where he is at now.

Congrats on the GR, Virgina.

I loved "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Sixteen Candles." Does anyone else remember Jake Ryan?

Helen said...

Congrats Virginia I would make him mow the lawn while I sipped on a cool drink in the shade.

Great post Suz

My first crush was on a guy called Owen I was about 14 years old and for over a year he was all I wanted but he hardly even spoke to me but that didn't stop me wanting him. Of course I did get over him and met my hubby about a year later.

Have Fun

First crush would be Stephen, wow, haven't thought about him in a long, long time. In books there was a series called Donna Parker mysteries. I always thought Donna had a crush on her neighbor.

Deb Marlowe said...

Oh, Suz! I had the same sort of crush experience! Great friends, lots of hanging out, talking on the phone, but yes, I would have *died* if he had figured out how I felt!

Makes me sigh just thinking about it...

Oh my, what a topic! Technically, I suppose my first crush was on Drew and Ryan. Drew lived across the street, and we were going to get married when we grew up. Ryan was in my class, and we would often announce our mutual love to everyone. This was in kindergarten, mind you. Later that same year, Drew and I got into an argument over the Inspector Gadget theme song and our friendship ended. He later moved away. And I don't know what happened to that Ryan; he went into the English stream and I went into French immersion, which made us bitter enemies who never spoke again.

But when I think of my first real crush, I don't think of Drew or Ryan. Though, ironically enough, I do think of more than one boy: another Ryan - seriously, what is it with me and blonde guys named Ryan? - and Mohamed, a.k.a. "Moe" to his friends.

I transfered out of French immersion and into the gifted program in fifth grade, and fell for Ryan almost immediately. I thought he looked like a bunny, and that was enough for me. I had a HUGE crush on him from grades five through eight, again in grade ten, and once more in grade eleven. I had other crushes between Ryan crushes, but I always regressed to liking him once those had burned out.

When I think about it, I'm not sure if I really liked Ryan all that much or if there just wasn't any competition. Essentially, there weren't many attractive boys in the gifted program. Heck, there weren't many boys, period. And the few in it were often your stereotypical geeks: slightly overweight, with bad hygeine, and obsessed with video games. Of course, Ryan was obsessed with World of Warcraft and had a rather bad case of acne he never seemed to treat, but that didn't stop me - and all but one of my female friends - from having a crush on him at some point or another. (Plus he was tall; by the time we graduated he was 6'5". Since I'm not a shorty myself - I'm 5'8" - I like a guy who's still taller than me when I strap on a pair of heels.) Ryan never returned the crushes. AT ALL. And when he knew about them, I think he was as repulsed as he was scared. I was strictly in the "friends" category as far as he was concerned.

Then there was Moe. I was a ninth grade loser and he was an eleventh-grader, and a jock, to boot! He already had the physique of an adult, and let me tell you, he was sexy, especially when shirtless. (Hey, he was on the volleyball team, and they change on the courts. Can't blame me for looking!) I burned for him, I [literally] dreamed of him, I wrote a novel featuring him as the main character - though in it I made him out to be a total jerk, because I wanted to cure myself of my crush, and strangely enough, it worked. Anyway, he was dating an equally popular, equally gorgeous girl, a redhead with a seemingly unlimited allowance and a wardrobe to match, and he never realized I existed.

I consider both of them my first crushes because my 5-8 crush on Ryan didn't really have a sexual element to it. Yes, I wanted to kiss him, but it was really only because that's what you're supposed to do when you date someone. Moe, on the other hand, was my first serving of good old-fashioned lust, with a heaping of tangled teenage emotions on the side. My second and third time around on the Ryanmobile were quite lust-fueled, though. The point is that, while different, they were both firsts - with Ryan, my first real crush, and with Moe, my first real, lusty crush. Rawr.

Good morning, Virginia and congrats on nabbing the GR. Hopefully, he's recovered from his trip to the National conference by now!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Ms. Jo!

Your crush on Tommy L, beats mine by about 2 years. At what point did you start to grow out of it?

And he noticed you only when he wanted the answer to a math problem? He should've asked an English question, huh?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Virginia, that first crush does feel like love, doesn't it? And we tend to shed many a teen angst-filled tear over them.

Funny, I don't often think of Greg, either, but do wonder what he's doing these days.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey, Jane!

I considered putting in "Can't Buy Me Love" but I wanted the girl's side of the unrequited love showcased. Patrick Dempsey was dang cute in that movie, wasn't he?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey, Helen!

Getting over your crush and finding your true love is the best kind of HEA ending to the whole crush story, isn't it? Sort of like Jo in Little Women.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Diana!

Stephen, huh? So was he tall? Short? Handsome? Smart? Details woman, details!

Doana Parker? Was it a mystery series?

Oh man, Suz, great blog -- and you identified one of my childhood crushes -- Mary Stuart Masterson! LOL. Not that kind of crush, but I did desperately want to be her. I had the same haircut, I would have worn the gloves and carried the drumsticks if I had the guts, and god bless it, my hair USED to be that same color (it is decidedly more brown now!). I was a bit -- er -- curvier than Mary, unfortunately.

I had a huge crush on a guy at a camp I worked at. He was from Hoboken, and told me lots of stories about how tough his childhood was (probably all made up). He was wounded, did a lot of martial arts, and seemed dangerous. I thought he was a hero from a romance novel and hoped for a long time I'd be the one to break through his reserve.

Never did. LOL. But I do have great memories of him. Sigh. :-)

Susan Sey said...

Oh, Suz, first loves. Sigh. I had so many desperate crushes I couldn't begin to ID the first one. Most of my wild crushes were on heros of romance novels, I have to admit. When you're an awkward fifteen year old reading 80s pirate-based romance novels, is your heart really going to pitty-pat over an equally awkward fifteen year old boy? No, I wanted me a bare-chested, knife-wielding, charm-oozing, woman-grabbing alpha with a gleam in his eye & chip on his shoulder.

Not that I'd have had the first clue what to do with him. :-) My imagination had far outstripped my experience at this point.

But I still read pirate novels with a happy little thrill.

Karen Olson said...

I agree with Jane about SIXTEEN CANDLES. Great crush movie!

My crush in high school was a guy named Tom who had no idea I even existed. He was on the football team, and my girlfriend and I would stalk him and his friends at the beach. But when you're the class geek, you're invisible.

I ran into him a couple years after we graduated, when we were in college, and he actually asked me out. But by then the magic was gone. So I turned him down. It made me feel good.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Wow, Lynz! Those are some kind of crushes!

While my crush on Greg started out as the innocent crush, it did turn lusty as he grew.......er.......lusty!

Moe, sounds like my brother's friend Billy B. Sigh. To this day he melts my.......heart. Yep, sure does!

But alas, I'm just a little sister!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Wow, Kirsten, I can see you as the tough, but tenders MSM character! You might not have carried the drum sticks then, but you carry a big one now!

And yes, I'll bet your boy from Hoboken was telling you some good stories about his life...I have a feeling some of Greg's stories were BS too! But didn't make me want to listen to them any less, that's for sure.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Susan!

No, I wanted me a bare-chested, knife-wielding, charm-oozing, woman-grabbing alpha with a gleam in his eye & chip on his shoulder...

I'll take one of those!

But honestly, Susan, Greg was all those things in my day dreams, and maybe a little in real life...He was his highschool's football captain!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey, Karen!

I ran into him a couple years after we graduated, when we were in college, and he actually asked me out. But by then the magic was gone. So I turned him down. It made me feel good...

Poor Tom. You got to turn the tables and break his heart. Good on you.

I had a friend that happened to a few years after highschool. A guy she'd secretly crushed on for years asked her out, and they ended up getting married! Talk about your HEA's. Maybe he just needed to mature enough to appreciate her. What do you think?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Deb Marlowe! Glad I got to see you at Nationals, by the way.

The talking on the phone thing always threw me with my crush, Deb. Until I learned there was a pattern.

First he'd call me to ask me what I thought about something his latest gf had done or he had done that made her mad. Then the next call would be to tell me they broke up. Then for a week or two he'd call a couple times a week, (getting my poor heart all excited), just to talk. Then nothing. (Which meant he'd snagged a new lady love.)

Sigh.

Karen Olson said...

Suzanne, that's cool about your friend. I think it can go either way: either the guy matures and he truly is prince charming or the girl (like me) realizes that he was a frog all along and is still a frog.

Fun post Suz -

I'm afraid I was the object of more crushes in my teen years than the other way around. I attribute this to developing a chest way too early for the rest of my adolescent frame. As the younger sister of two brothers, I was too trusting and easy-going with guys. None of those experiences are the kind of things you'd wish for your daughters...but -

I did have a crush on this lifeguard at the pool where I worked (in the concession stand). Donny was the older brother of one of my close guy friends and I thought he was the funniest, most handsome thing ever. However, he was oblivious to my drooling desire. About ten years later, after I had been married for several years and had passed the CPA exam, I discovered I was in a "how to buy a house" class with Donny's older sister. We were laughing one day and I confessed my crush. She said "oh everyone had a crush on Donny. He's just that kind of guy." BTW, Donny became a CPA as well - though that was neither of our ambitions during that summer at the pool. (Who aspires to be an accountant when they grow up?)

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Karen, yeah, he's one of the true prince charmings.

And as for the frogs. It must've felt too good to give your own frog the brush off!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey, Donna! Wow, it must've been hard figuring out which guys wanted you for more than just your chest! Sadly, a problem I didn't have.

As for Donny. Uhm, Donna and Donny? I think the name and love goddesses were too cruel to give him as your big crush!

Tracy Garrett said...

Hi Suz and Banditas!

My first crush (I think. There were many) was on TW. Only initials, cause you just never know. He was a year older than me, sang like an angel, and was the cutest guy. We were in choir and musicals together--but he always went out with the cutesy cheerleader type, which I was not [read band nerd!]. But that's okay. I've got my Dan. :D

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Tracy G! Glad to see you this morning.

Yes, your Dan is worth ten or twenty TW's!

And while I wasn't a band nerd, I was a choir chick. Luckily, as a first alto, I got to sit near the basses...where quite a few crush-worthy footballers sat! Hmmmmmm, mama!

What a great blog topic. You are so taking me back. And I agree, this would make a great YA book. Only you'd get the boy, of couse.

Now that I think about it, I had several crushes. But I remember when I was 12 I fell in love with Johnny, the boy who lived two houses over. We grew up together and that summer I became his buddy. So wanted to be more.

How's this for angst? I'd put on my Lionel Richie album and sing along with Hello as he walked past my window. LOL! So pathetic. But he was sweet enough to provide me with my first slow dance at my 13th birthday party.

Oddly enough, we both went on to be DJs. Him in clubs and me on the radio. I like to think my gig was better. :)

Sandy Blair said...

Great blog topic, Suzy. My first crush happened during my freshman year in high school. He, breathtakingly handsome and talented, was a senior and played the King in the school's production of "The King and I." Of course he didn't know I was alive. He went off to Hollywood after graduation where he garnered a few secondary movie roles then disappeared.

Jo Davis said...

Great topic, and takes me back a ways! In school, my first crush was in elementary. I adored a dark-haired boy named David, and I wonder what happened to him.

On TV, my first big crush was on David Cassidy of the Partridge Family. SIGH... :)

Addison Fox said...

Kirsten! We must be separated at birth! I DESPERATELY wanted to be Mary Stuart Masterson, too, after I saw Some Kind of Wonderful. I did get the drums and drum lessons and a stint in the h.s. band but my mother forbid the hair dying!

Since Suzanne gave me the all clear - and you all were so great to mention Sixteen Candles - I can go all fan-girl here and say my first crush was the actor Anthony Michael Hall. I was 12 when I saw Sixteen Candles and my poor, pre-teen heart leapt in my chest when he came walking down that bus aisle in all his glorious geekiness.

He is STILL #1 on my "List of Five" 24 years later! And, I am happy to report, I have seen him twice in person and he is seriously HOT. Clearly I knew a diamond in the rough all those many years ago :-)

Addison

PS
Total non-sequitor, but if you're looking for some awesome music to write to, his mother, Mercedes Hall, is a jazz singer. Her music is FANTASTIC to write to!

Addison Fox said...

Tracy G. - I think Dan was a WAY better choice!!! :-)

Addison Fox said...

Oh goodness, I went so far into fan-girl land I totally forgot my real-live-person crush. Matt was his name....he was completely adorable and we danced to "Some Guys Have All the Luck" by Rod Stewart at a middle school dance. (How is it that I can't remember what I ate for breakfast but I can remember the song as well as how he smelled that night??)

I haven't thought about him in years, but....yep, he can still bring a smile to my face.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey, Terrio!

Johnny sounds dreamy and yes Lionel Richie's "Hello" would be very angsty! Mine was David Cassidy's "I think I love you"!

I'm thinking radio DJ'ing far outweighs club DJ'ing by a mile, but cool that you both ended up in the same profession, sort of!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey, Sandy B!

My goodness the things we learn about our CP's on blogs.

You had a crush on a future movie star? WOW. Can you imagine how those girls who had crushes on the Brad Pitts and Johnny Depps must feel these days?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Jo Davis!!

Another CP heard from. David huh? In elementary school?

You know, my next door neighbor, Paul was the school crush guy for my elementary school. I had trouble with that, since I tended to beat him up on a regular basis until the third grade when my mama put a stop to it!

It was a little sister thing.

And David Cassidy...I knew that about you. He did have a great singing voice, didn't he?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

LOL, Addison!

Yes, I did give you permission to talk about AMH. Banditas, this is a serious to die for crush she STILL has! Makes me smile everytime you talk about it, Addison!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Addison said:...he was completely adorable and we danced to "Some Guys Have All the Luck" by Rod Stewart at a middle school dance...

Sigh. I wish I'd gotten the chance to dance just one dance with Greg. I danced plenty with other guys at my schools, but I bet one with him would've rocked my world back then! Lucky you!!

Joan said...

My first crush was at 6 mos.

I know...wouldn't expect Joanie T to have started that early :-)

His name was Richard. He was older...12 mos. but we have a pic of him leaning over to kiss me on the cheek.

But we soon parted ways...he to kindergarten me to pre-school.

Sigh.

Then I had my first date in 1st grade. Well, it was kind of a date. The boy across the street Herbie and I went to a movie at church. Between us we had just enough to buy and share one bag of popcorn and one Orange Crush.

I knew when he hogged the popcorn bag it could never work.

Two redheads followed. Gary C. and a guy who starred in the high school produciton of "Paint Your Wagon"

From there I worked up to paper boy, a couple of doctors and a Greek plastic surgeon...but alas, crushes only they remained.

As to others add me to the David Cassidy and Bobby Sherman fan clubs though I had a bit of a shock the other day....Bobby Sherman is SIXTY SIX years old!!!

Aghhhh

Terri Osburn said...

Joanie - You are such the over-achiever. LOL! I now feel the need to reveal that my kindergarten boyfriend offered me a ring. It was out of little gumball vending machine, but it was still a ring. *g*

In elementary school, I ended up crushing big time on a boy whose father had gone to school with my mother. And at the same age she had the same crush...on the father.

Funny how the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. LOL!

In elementary school, I had a crush on two boys at once! One was cute and nice (he actually spoke to me--I still remember that!) and he could draw. Hey, Virginia, he's left our fair shores for you! Congratulations!

Suz, what a gorgeous post. When I was a really little girl, I had a huge crush on the oldest son of the people who owned the farm next door. He was much too old for me, of course ;-)

Becke Davis said...

You got him, Virginia - congrats!

Oh, Suzanne, this post brought back sooo many memories. Moon Doggy (loved him), Paul McCartney, Hwyel Bennett, Eric Clapton, Joey Molland from Badfinger, Eric Stoltz in Some Kind of Wonderful, Robert Downey, Jr. in most of his movies - crush, crush, crush.

I had a couple of crushes on real guys when I was in school, but I was shy in my younger days and only my best friend ever knew who they were. Later, most of those guys became friends -- none became boyfriends, but they were all great guys, so I felt as if I'd picked good people to crush on.

And then I met my husband. . .

Being a romance reader/writer, I so wanted to hear that you ended up marrying Greg. But, in real life, things don't always happen as they do in books. Still, I do hope you'll put this in a book someday!

Congrats on nabbing the GR, Virginia!

Hey! I've been wanting to re-watch Gidget! :D

My first crush ever? First day of junior kindergarten, I met the other kiddies and BAM! There's this really cute brown-haired boy named David with this killer(um in the way of cute little kindergarten boys) smile. Crush at first sight, I tell ya. :D He was nice even as we got older and he was one of the cool kids and I was most assuredly not. But the crush faded as nothing came of it and though I still thought he was pretty cute by the time we finished grade school, well, he was still pretty much my height which is pretty short and I kinda preferred taller guys.

A silly crush that stands out is that one summer I had one on the next door neighbour's boy whose name I didn't know and whom I never spoke to and didn't know anything about. I was kinda riveted when he was mowing his backyard lawn shirtless. Ha! To top it off, he was blasting Metallica's The Black Album which I was pretty obsessed with that summer already.

Ah...this post reminds me of the song "You Don't Know Me"...You'll never know the one, who dreams of you at night. Who longs to kiss your lips, longs to hold you tight...
First crush I remember was a tall-dark haired, sloe-eyed shoe salesman. I was seven and my mom took me to buy new shoes for the school year. I told my mom he was handsome and was teased mercilessly for the next few years about the guy. Funny, but to this day, I have always preferred tall dark and handsome...In college, I had a mad crush on a guy who asked me out but I already had plans with a friend that evening. He moved on to a girl in my dorm and I was way too shy to pursue him anyway. I really had a bad crush on him. I still have dreams about him from time to time. My college roommate ran into him a Home Depot one day and she called to tell me that he asked about me and wanted to know if I was married. Rats! Missed opportunities!
Joan..I still have my Bobby Sherman album...Julie, Julie, Julie, do you love me?

Hi Suz, lovely post! I think one of my favourite teen crush movies was Sixteen Candles. Jake Ryan...ahhh.

I've had several crushes but usually I was pretty aware that that's what they were and I just enjoyed them without getting too disappointed when they didn't amount to anything. It's quite an exhilarating feeling, and I think we try to re-create that first blush and shiver of enthusiasm a lot in our books. Once you're old and married, it doesn't happen quite that way any more.

Virginia, congrats on the bird!

In fact I was with a friend watching "Three Days Of The Condor" in a small theater, when right before the movie started in walked the entire team, dressed in good clothes and ties. Oh, Suz, I loved to be in love when I was a teenager. I had mad crushes on many boys who were far, far out of my reach. The longest one was with Stuart. He was a couple of years older than I was (if I remember right) and was on the football team, wrestling team and did field events during track season. He was also smart and planned to go to engineering school.

Naturally, everyone in the free world (him included) knew I had a crush on him. This was a little humiliating, but it didn't deter me. I pined for him with all my teenaged heart. It was a hefty helping of pining, let me tell ya. When he graduated, I promptly moved on and found other boys to crush on. Only by then, some of them actually liked me back. It was never the same!

Oh, Jane, who was ever hotter than Jake Ryan? *g* I loved "Sixteen Candles" and all the other Brat Pack movies. It kills me that Molly Ringwald (who is my age) just had TWINS. The thought makes me want to drink poison, since my "baby" is nearly 15 and the oldest is 23. Molly left it a little late! Maybe she never got over Jake. *g*

Oh, and I meant to say that the only girl Stuart dated in high school (and it wasn't for that long) was a girl named Cecilia, who was a year ahead of me. I wanted to hate her, but she was nice and friendly and we were all in Campus Life together. *sigh* She friended me on Facebook and everything.

Okay, Joanie is going to make me reach into the wayback machine. In first grade I had my first mad crush. His name was Clay Gassaway and he was the cutest thing ever. In our class picture, you can see the mischief in his eyes. I'm sure that was the attraction! I remember one day when we had some sort of "parent's lunch" (which meant our moms came). I can't believe with five of us that my mother actually came, but she did. She let me have an extra nickel to buy ice cream (the tub with the wooden spoon). I was there with my mother, chocolate ice cream and Clay (and his mom). It was like a slice of heaven!

Sadly, he moved at the end of the school year to Hendersonville. It was only a few miles up the road, but might as well have been Pluto. *sigh*

Virginia, have fun with him! Jo, better luck next time.

Fun post, Suz. I watch Some Kind of Love every time it's on TV. The movie has a lot of heart.

Teenage crushes? Sure, I had them. But even first names would be too much of a giveaway if anyone from those days saw this comment.

I had a sort of crush in college on a guy I worked with at the radio station. He was tall, a big plus with me, had a crisp, terrific radio voice, a friendly personality, a quick mind . . . and a girlfriend. So there was never any hope, but running into him in the library made my heart go pit-a-pat, and he'd occasionally detour from his heading to walk along with me if we met on campus.

I'm sure he never knew I was interested. Having a girlfriend or, later, a wife meant a guy was off-limits as far as I was concerned, and I behaved accordingly. I have no idea what became of him, but I remember him fondly.

I talked to him once after he graduated, when a friend of mine engaged in some drunk dialing at a party he attended. When the phone rang at 3 a.m. and I heard her voice, I assumed something terrible had happened. Then I wanted to kill her for scaring me. Then she put him on the phone, and the first words out of his mouth were, "I want you to know this was not my idea."

That much, I already knew, as I told him. We chatted aimlessly before he put my intoxicated friend back on the phone with the gentlemanly suggestion that she let me go back to bed. And that's the last I heard of him. Wherever he is, I hope his life is going well.

Diana said: Oh yes, taller than me which was really unusual at the time, he had a tan to die for and sandy blonde hair and muscles everywhere! Definitely handsome and a bad boy to boot...be still the echoes of my teen age heart. ...

A bad boy to boot?!?! I can see why you fell for him.

Hey Beth! Curtis, huh? And to not find out for years? Sigh

You know, speaking of crushes, my daughter had a crush on a boy in her church, (deja vu anyone?) only he had a crush back, that developed into a great love...They have since married and have given me two beautiful grandchildren!

Hey Caren!

Stuart sounds very dreamy!! I can just see you hanging around the track to see him running in his little shorts! :)

Oh, Suz, I loved to be in love when I was a teenager. I had mad crushes on many boys who were far, far out of my reach...

I did have mini-crushes even while I had my mad love for Greg. A few even paid attention to me, but I always came back to the one who stole my heart!

Okay, Caren and Joanie...If we're going way back, in first grade I had a crush on a boy named Brian V. He must've liked me back, coz he gave me a ride home a few times on his bike, (He as so cool he had a banana seat!) Sadly, my big brother and his friends confronted him (the big bullies) and he never brought me home again! :(

Oh, Nancy...that story deserved a HEA. Like he called, and even though it wasn't his idea he remembered how much he liked you, then things progressed, he called of his own accord, asked you out....ohhhhhhh wouldn't that have been great?

Sorry for leaving everyone for a while. My checkbook insists that I show up for work!
