Today we welcome four of our buddies in as our guests! We're celebrating the launch this month of the new blog The Romance Dish by four veteran bloggers. Welcome, y'all!Thank you so much for inviting us to spend the day in the Lair. We are very excited to be here and are planning to have a fabulous time with the Bandits and Bandit Buddies! And before you even ask, PJ has been working up a storm in the kitchen and there are turtles for everyone. Yes, enough for everyone!!

What is The Romance Dish, and who created it?
The Romance Dish is a blog and review site where we "serve up our thoughts on books, romance and life." We came up with the idea for The Romance Dish while the four of us were attending the Moonlight and Magnolias Conference last month in Atlanta. As reviewers at RNTV, we enjoyed sharing our love of romance, and when Marisa and Maria decided to close the site, we decided to begin our own blog. And thus a blog was born.
What's the long-term goal of your new blog?
Everything happened so quickly! It has only been 7 short weeks since we decided to run our own blog site. It has been a whirlwind adventure and things have not slowed down one bit. We have been so busy we have not even thought of long-term goals for The Romance Dish.
What are the regular features?
Besides reviews, guest author spots and the occasional recipe, we have many monthly features at The Romance Dish. Around the first week of the month, we have Andrea's New Releases, where she lists tons of new releases by sub-genre. On the 10th of every month, Trish Milburn brings us her Teen Menu, where she features the latest in YA romance and movies. Buffie, the Queen of the Hotties, shares her latest hottie with us in her Hot Dish on the 15th of every month. And on the 24th of every month, Anna Campbell gives us a Second Helping review of a book we may have missed.
What are the reading preferences of the various Dishers?
(Andrea) The first romance I ever read was a historical and I was instantly enraptured, which is funny because I hated learning about history in high school. Now I realize it must have been the teacher. For many years, historicals were all I ever read, but in recent years I have discovered straight contemporaries (both full length and categories) and I love them as well! I also enjoy a little paranormal and urban fantasy.
(Buffie) Drawn into reading romance on a fluke, the first romance novel I read was an historical, a medieval to more precise. Needless to say, the historical genre is my first love, and within that genre medievals are at the top of my list. I love to escape to another time and place and who doesn’t love a Highlander in a kilt!! After I started reviewing books, my eyes were opened wide to the joy and fun of other genres. Now I pretty much read everything.
(Gannon) Historical romances are my first love. They were my introduction to the romance genre. Honestly, I'll read just about anything. But my favorites are historical, paranormal, and contemporary. Reviewing books has allowed me to discover some fabulous new authors, which I so enjoy. Who doesn't want to add more books to their TBR pile? Mine is reminiscent of Mt. Everest!
(PJ) I rotate among a variety of sub-genres. Historicals were my first love and, if forced to choose, I would probably still list them as my favorite. I also enjoy reading contemporaries, romantic suspense and what I call paranormal "lite". I've recently begun venturing into urban fantasy and some SciFi/Futuristic romance. I also enjoy reading mysteries and political thrillers.
Could each of you tell us what drew you into blogging about books?
(PJ) I've always enjoyed sharing my love of romance through my comments at various boards and blogs. About two years ago, Maria and Marisa at RomanceNovel.TV approached me with the suggestion that I formalize the thoughts I had been posting at the RNTV Forum by writing book reviews for them. I discovered that writing reviews was not only challenging and rewarding, it was fun!
(Gannon)--I was a regular commenter at SquawkRadio--may it rest in peace ;)--as well as Eloisa James and Julia Quinn's BB, Romance Novel TV and of course, Romance Bandits. *g* After about a year of posting at RNTV, the M's asked if I would like to join the review team and I, of course, said "Heck, yeah!" It was the best of both worlds: reading fabulous books (and getting those coveted ARCs) and sharing my love of romance. It was a win win situation.
(Andrea) My story is similar to Gannon's. I was a regular visitor/lurker at various sites like the Avon Authors BB, Squawk Radio, the EJ/JQ BB, the Romance Bandits and Romance Novel TV and loved talking about the books that I've read and loved. It was nice to have a place to share my love of romance novels with others who felt the same way, because no one in my "real life" read romance (though, my sister does now. *g*) When Maria and Marisa (from RNTV) asked me if I'd like to formally review books, I jumped at the chance and haven't looked back!
(Buffie) Several years ago, I found the Avon Authors BB and was so happy to find a large group of women who loved to read and talk about romance novels. I was astounded at how much they knew about authors and books. I believe I actually fell out of my chair when Julia Quinn herself answered one of my questions about her books. I couldn’t believe that authors actually visited boards and chatted with readers! Then I found my way to other boards – Squawk Radio, Romance Reader at Heart, Eloisa James and Julia Quinn BB, The Romance Bandits, and finally RNTV. I think I smiled for days after Marisa and Maria asked me to review books. There’s nothing like sharing my love of romance with everyone!
Are you interested in guest bloggers? If you are, what do you want to see from people interested in being guests?
Oh yes, we very interested in guest bloggers. We love it when authors stop by and visit with us for a day. It is always nice to hear about a new release directly from the author. But we also enjoy reading about day to day activities in a guest blogger’s life. Sometimes the smallest thing impacts the most people. ReplyDeleteWhat draws me out in blogs? Generally if/when I visit a blog, I'll comment. To leave my "stamp" as it were. (Also because I love love love comments, so you know - act as you want others to, and all that.)
The "problem" for me is keeping up with that. I used to visit nearly 200 blogs daily. (yes, 2 zeroes) And comment at nearly all of them. These days, I visit 2, maybe three a day. Or less. :X (Witness, I wasn't at the banditas blog the past few days. :'( Did anyone even notice? heh. ok.)
Contests always have a big draw, of course - but just question and answer with individuals, or if there is something I feel strongly about- good or bad. I think its obvious I'm good at being a chatty cathy :P

I knew we'd never have to say goodbye completely but to see that you've turned your enthusiasm for great books into such a successful new venture is wonderful to see. Really enjoyed the recent Squawk reunion!
As for what I like to see in blogs, I like guests to do something a little different. Maybe reveal something about her books or the way she writes that I didn't know before. And I love a guest who can make me laugh.

Lime, I'm visiting a friend who grew up in Columbus and is an Ohio State fan so we'll be cheering for the Buckeyes too. I grew up in MI and my dad was a UM grad but I'm a MI State girl so no Wolverine cheering here. ;-)

As to a blog...I like the community that develops within one. Whatever the inciting post...review, guest author, discussion of truck nuts...it's the friends who spend the day bringing their own unique take on the topic that makes it fun. And yeah....being an instigator of such sometimes...I like when it goes off on ROFL tangents.
As to books...I have discovered some MARVOLOUS new authors that are now must buys. And in discovering them, have broadened my horizons in the sub genres I read.
And as an historical author...YAY that those were your first loves!

ReplyDeleteI am so far behind on my tbr pile I may never catch up, but that is okay, I get nervous if I don't have a new book to pick up. Like you PJ I have started my Christmas reads, I am starting with some old Regency Christmas that includes Mary Balogh shorts.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is any particular subject that draws me out on the blogs, it is just if I have something to share. If the topic is about writing in particular then I don't share because I am not a writer so I don't have an opinion. I love the chance to hear from any authors which is why I come by the blogs every day, I don't go to 200 but I do visit some every day.
Ladies, I am thrilled for you to have created a fabulous new spot on the web for us all to gather. I am very picky with my blogs (not enough hours in the day to visit HALF of the ones I like) but I seem to find myself on the Dish all the time! You create a fantastic community. I just have to stop lurking all the time and join in. Bad habit, I know.

On my to-buy list are Ilona Andrews' new series and Gena Showalter's new book (Playing with Fire?) and Julie Kenner's Tainted. The last book I bought was Ann Aguirre's Skin Game, written under her Ava Gray name.

As for what draws me to comment on a blog? I have to confess, it's usually a personal connection. The internet is such a huge, vast place, and I'm so wretched at reading (let alone appropriately responding to) social cues without the visual. I get nervous even talking on the phone to people I don't know well, so imagine me on the internet.
Yeah, it gets scary. :-)
So I do much better if there's a personal connection of some sort. Which means those conferences we all go to where we actually put a name to the face, or sometimes even a lovely turtle (I'm thinking of you, PJ, you wonderful thing) to the face? It's totally worth the cost of going because it gives you the face to face connection. People remember that, the way they don't remember everything you said on line.
Holy crap!! More typos! It is hard to concentrate with Demetrius and Sven laving on the attention.

As to commenting, I always have an opinion so commenting is usually my normal inclination. Where I DON'T comment is where the bloggers are negative. Where they're either mean or condescending or snarky about either the book being reviewed or about other authors or books. I f don't go back to read and I don't post. YOu can't ever "win" on a blog like that, nor can you change anyone's mind so...
I love it when you have bloggers who are present. Its so fun to stop by the Dish and see ya'll posting answers or, really, conversing with the posters. Ya'll do it, The Revengers do it, of course, as we all know. :> There are a lot of wonderful blogs out there where this is the case! :>

As far as reading blogs, I only follow a few due to time restrictions. But I enjoy just about anything, a review, an interview, or a blogger talking about every day stuff. I find I comment more on the fun stuff than the author interviews or reviews. But that's just me.

As to what I like on a blog - a fun atmosphere and info about romances *g*. I've learned so much and been introduced to so many different authors since we launched Romance Bandits and I'm looking forward to still more at The Dish! I love all your reviews - they're written by people who love romances so they are so much more useful than other reviews, and they often speak to my reading soul.
I also like getting to know authors, so the more they interact with the commenters the better.
I must admit, my time to blog is so limited, I only have a couple I vist and then I read more often than I comment (but, I'm there lurking!)
So sad that RNTV has closed its

I'm very excited about your addition to the Romance Book blog community.
As to what I like to read on a blog, reviews are always good because they bring me new insights into what an author is doing, and lead me to wonderful new books which I might otherwise pass by and miss.
But I also love reading personal stuff from the bloggers. Getting a peek inside the thought processes of each of you is something I'm looking forward to. I know it's a bit of an illusion, but when I've spent a while reading someone's blogs, I feel as though I know that person. And when we meet, it's much easier to fall right into a friendship. It's one of the cool, positive things about blogging communities IMO.

OH, yes, you WILL LOVE the Opryland Hotel. I'm sorry I didn't get to chime in on Jeanne's blog about it. I was out of town that day. But I drove down to have dinner with her while she was there last weekend and OMG! It had been a while since I was in there, and it's even more fabulous now. I predict it will be the best conference ever. Everybody is just more positive when surrounded by all that beauty! How can you not be?
Sounds like a wonderful new blog. The most important thing for me is that there is give and take (lke this blog). Nothing bothers me more as when someone picks a topic and everyone gives their thoughts and the author never gets back to the blog. It's obvious that they just think they have to do a blog but aren't really interested so they pick the same old topics. Variety usually makes everyone happy. Lots of luck.

ReplyDeleteI'm still reeling from Lime's 200 blog list. I've recently cut back on my blog visits (modest in number by Lime's standards) because I need the writing time, but The Romance Dish became a must-visit-daily site from day one (as is Romance Bandits, of course). I love the reviews and the guests on the blogs I visit, but for me the deciding factor on whether I join in the discussion is the community itself--the personalities and the interactions.

My favorites of the 2009 reads so far are Courtney Milan's "This Wicked Gift" in The Heart of Christmas and Carla Kelly's "Christmas Promise" in A Regency Christmas. I'm currently reading Susan Wiggs's Lakeshore Christmas, and it is intensifying my eagerness for Daisy's story.

It is interesting to me that when the Bandits came together, we were so fortunate to be 20 women of like mind on this issue. Postitive energy is good for everybody. It makes every situation win-win. I am a wuss about nastiness and will not tolerate it in my entertaiment venues. The world hits you with enough of that as it is.

My first romance novels were YAs, the stories of the Parrish and Jordan families by Janet Lambert and the Beany Malone books of Lenora Mattingly Weber.
As for blogs, what draws me out is an interesting topic.
The first romances I bought as an adult were historicals. I still have the first one--Shirley Busbee's The Spanish Rose.
Buffie, the space under your desk must've been very, very crowded with both those hunky guys under it. I hope they made your day lively.

ReplyDeleteI know some people enjoy blogs like that, and that's fine. But it isn't for me. I spent enough of my adult life dealing with other people's conflicts.
We have a range of political views in the Lair, so we generally try to avoid that topic. Why create divisions, among ourselves or our visitors, if you don't have to? We like each other, and we try to focus on our compatibilities (is that really a word?) rather than our differences.
Quarreling blogs have their place, I think, but it isn't one that draws me.
Hey, Jo--Not that any of us needs help adding to the TBR pile, but I enjoy finding new authors on blogs, too. We recently had someone complain about the Romance Bandits making her TBR pile grow, and Joan said, "What do you think it's done to mine?!"

I love the nice gossipy blogs about our favorite hero inspirations, what trends are working in romance, what trends aren't, what readers would LIKE to see in romances, what they love in romance and what they hate to see.
I am a historical romance reader and writer first and foremost, but I read across all genres. I read YA to know which books to get for my niece. As long as the writing is good and the characters are interesting and intriguing I will read almost anything.

Louisa, I have a YA recommendation for you. Patricia Wrede wrote a series of books in a "fractured fairy tale" vein (according to her website) that starts with one about a princess going off to live with a dragon and the hapless knights who try to rescue her against her will. They're very funny. The boy loved them before he got too big to read books about girls. :-/

When I visit a blog, I like to interact with the authors who are posting there that day. Nothing is more impressive to me than authors who take an interest in their readers and try to leave a personal comment for each one. Our own Anna Campbell is a good example of one of those authors. She's also a good example of the type of author who's fun to read. Whenever I see that Anna has written a blog post, I know I'm in for a treat! Fortunately, this is true of all the Banditas. Whenever I come to this blog, I never know what I'm in for. but it's always a pleasure. And what's great about this blog is the caliber of people who comment on it. So if you Dishy ladies are fortunate enough to have half that caliber on your site (which I also enjoy, btw), then you are fortunate indeed.

Louisa, I second Nancy's recommendation of the Wrede books. I adored them, even as an adult reader. I'd also recommend the Mercedes Lackey beginning of her Valdemar series:
