Dishing on Romance

Today we welcome four of our buddies in as our guests! We're celebrating the launch this month of the new blog The Romance Dish by four veteran bloggers. Welcome, y'all!

Thank you so much for inviting us to spend the day in the Lair. We are very excited to be here and are planning to have a fabulous time with the Bandits and Bandit Buddies! And before you even ask, PJ has been working up a storm in the kitchen and there are turtles for everyone. Yes, enough for everyone!!

We hope Sven and the Gladiators have rested up and are ready for us.

Oooooh boys, where are you??

What is The Romance Dish, and who created it?

The Romance Dish is a blog and review site where we "serve up our thoughts on books, romance and life." We came up with the idea for The Romance Dish while the four of us were attending the Moonlight and Magnolias Conference last month in Atlanta. As reviewers at RNTV, we enjoyed sharing our love of romance, and when Marisa and Maria decided to close the site, we decided to begin our own blog. And thus a blog was born.

What's the long-term goal of your new blog?

Everything happened so quickly! It has only been 7 short weeks since we decided to run our own blog site. It has been a whirlwind adventure and things have not slowed down one bit. We have been so busy we have not even thought of long-term goals for The Romance Dish.

What are the regular features?

Besides reviews, guest author spots and the occasional recipe, we have many monthly features at The Romance Dish. Around the first week of the month, we have Andrea's New Releases, where she lists tons of new releases by sub-genre. On the 10th of every month, Trish Milburn brings us her Teen Menu, where she features the latest in YA romance and movies. Buffie, the Queen of the Hotties, shares her latest hottie with us in her Hot Dish on the 15th of every month. And on the 24th of every month, Anna Campbell gives us a Second Helping review of a book we may have missed.

What are the reading preferences of the various Dishers?

(Andrea) The first romance I ever read was a historical and I was instantly enraptured, which is funny because I hated learning about history in high school. Now I realize it must have been the teacher. For many years, historicals were all I ever read, but in recent years I have discovered straight contemporaries (both full length and categories) and I love them as well! I also enjoy a little paranormal and urban fantasy.

(Buffie) Drawn into reading romance on a fluke, the first romance novel I read was an historical, a medieval to more precise. Needless to say, the historical genre is my first love, and within that genre medievals are at the top of my list. I love to escape to another time and place and who doesn’t love a Highlander in a kilt!! After I started reviewing books, my eyes were opened wide to the joy and fun of other genres. Now I pretty much read everything.

(Gannon) Historical romances are my first love. They were my introduction to the romance genre. Honestly, I'll read just about anything. But my favorites are historical, paranormal, and contemporary. Reviewing books has allowed me to discover some fabulous new authors, which I so enjoy. Who doesn't want to add more books to their TBR pile? Mine is reminiscent of Mt. Everest!

(PJ) I rotate among a variety of sub-genres. Historicals were my first love and, if forced to choose, I would probably still list them as my favorite. I also enjoy reading contemporaries, romantic suspense and what I call paranormal "lite". I've recently begun venturing into urban fantasy and some SciFi/Futuristic romance. I also enjoy reading mysteries and political thrillers.

Could each of you tell us what drew you into blogging about books?

(PJ) I've always enjoyed sharing my love of romance through my comments at various boards and blogs. About two years ago, Maria and Marisa at RomanceNovel.TV approached me with the suggestion that I formalize the thoughts I had been posting at the RNTV Forum by writing book reviews for them. I discovered that writing reviews was not only challenging and rewarding, it was fun!

(Gannon)--I was a regular commenter at SquawkRadio--may it rest in peace ;)--as well as Eloisa James and Julia Quinn's BB, Romance Novel TV and of course, Romance Bandits. *g* After about a year of posting at RNTV, the M's asked if I would like to join the review team and I, of course, said "Heck, yeah!" It was the best of both worlds: reading fabulous books (and getting those coveted ARCs) and sharing my love of romance. It was a win win situation.

(Andrea) My story is similar to Gannon's. I was a regular visitor/lurker at various sites like the Avon Authors BB, Squawk Radio, the EJ/JQ BB, the Romance Bandits and Romance Novel TV and loved talking about the books that I've read and loved. It was nice to have a place to share my love of romance novels with others who felt the same way, because no one in my "real life" read romance (though, my sister does now. *g*) When Maria and Marisa (from RNTV) asked me if I'd like to formally review books, I jumped at the chance and haven't looked back!

(Buffie) Several years ago, I found the Avon Authors BB and was so happy to find a large group of women who loved to read and talk about romance novels. I was astounded at how much they knew about authors and books. I believe I actually fell out of my chair when Julia Quinn herself answered one of my questions about her books. I couldn’t believe that authors actually visited boards and chatted with readers! Then I found my way to other boards – Squawk Radio, Romance Reader at Heart, Eloisa James and Julia Quinn BB, The Romance Bandits, and finally RNTV. I think I smiled for days after Marisa and Maria asked me to review books. There’s nothing like sharing my love of romance with everyone!

Are you interested in guest bloggers? If you are, what do you want to see from people interested in being guests?

Oh yes, we very interested in guest bloggers. We love it when authors stop by and visit with us for a day. It is always nice to hear about a new release directly from the author. But we also enjoy reading about day to day activities in a guest blogger’s life. Sometimes the smallest thing impacts the most people. Anyone interested in being a guest blogger at The Romance Dish can contact us via email at theromancedishATgmailDOTcom.

Now here are a couple questions for all of you. What do you enjoy reading most on a blog? Is it a great review or the chance to talk with your favorite author? What subject draws you out of your shell and makes you comment?

  1. Hi Romance Dishers! Heh - sorry PJ. The GR hasn't been with me for a while, and its fitting he's here for THE BIG GAME.
What draws me out in blogs? Generally if/when I visit a blog, I'll comment. To leave my "stamp" as it were. (Also because I love love love comments, so you know - act as you want others to, and all that.)
The "problem" for me is keeping up with that. I used to visit nearly 200 blogs daily. (yes, 2 zeroes) And comment at nearly all of them. These days, I visit 2, maybe three a day. Or less. :X (Witness, I wasn't at the banditas blog the past few days. :'( Did anyone even notice? heh. ok.)
Contests always have a big draw, of course - but just question and answer with individuals, or if there is something I feel strongly about- good or bad. I think its obvious I'm good at being a chatty cathy :P

  2. Whoa, Limecello! 200 Blogs? That's impressive!

I'll answer that last question of yours. We frequent a lot of the same boards and I always enjoy reading your comments so, yes, you were definitely missed!

I'm trying to remember where you live. Is it the OSU vs Michigan game?

  3. PJ - haha, thanks. A girl needs an ego stroke every now and then, even if she's blatantly angling for it - so thank you for indulging me :X I will try to refrain from being [more of a] brat from now on. today. *angelface*
And yes! It is Ohio State vs m*ch. I'm a Buckeye :) Went there for undergrad. Actually, I'm not as excited about the game as I should be, but considering its in less than 12 hours, I'm trying get pumped up. Or something.
Love the Romance Dish site- I've been trying to [remember to] visit...

  5. Woohoo!!!! A very hearty welcome to some of my favourite ladies on the net (and in person, too!)

I was so glad to see that you all picked up the ball and ran with it when Maria and Marisa sadly closed the doors at RNTV. I knew we'd never have to say goodbye completely but to see that you've turned your enthusiasm for great books into such a successful new venture is wonderful to see. Really enjoyed the recent Squawk reunion!

As for what I like to see in blogs, I like guests to do something a little different. Maybe reveal something about her books or the way she writes that I didn't know before. And I love a guest who can make me laugh.

Thanks so much for being with us today, ladies! We always love to see you.

  6. Oh, PJ, just pipped at the post by Lime! Congrats on snaffling that rooster, Limecello:)

PJ are you and the other dishy dames going to National this year?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Lime, I'm visiting a friend who grew up in Columbus and is an Ohio State fan so we'll be cheering for the Buckeyes too. I grew up in MI and my dad was a UM grad but I'm a MI State girl so no Wolverine cheering here. ;-)

  8. Helen, I'm sure there are plenty of wonderful aromas coming from your kitchen!

That Avon BB board was a busy place, wansn't it? I hope you have the opportunity to meet Julia in person one of these days. She's a lovely person!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Thanks, Christine! :)

All four of us live within easy driving distance of Nashville and we all plan to attend the 2010 RWA National. Have you changed your mind and decided to come? I hope so!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Limecello -- 200 blogs!!!! Girl, how in the world did you do that? And your a Buckeye? I knew I liked you! My family is from the Indiana/Ohio area.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hey Helen! Thanks for your kind words. And I am so happy you mentioned my hotties ;-)

I see you received a Julia Quinn response that kept you smiling too! I couldn't believe she answered one of my questions either. That was the first time I felt like authors were "real" to me.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Aww, thanks Christine!

Yes, it does look like all four of us will be attending Nationals next year. It will be my first and I am already so excited to meet some of my cyber buddies. I sure hope you will be there!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I know it is still early here in the states, but I am already at work (not too much fun on a Saturday). So, can someone please send a cabana boy or gladitor my way. I need something to get me going . . .

    ReplyDelete
  14. Limecello, how did you ever manage 200 blogs in a day?! Makes my head spin just thinking about it!

I'm sure the GR will enjoy college football. We are major football fans in my family. I grew with 2 sisters, but we love football just as much as my dad. And my mom can get a little out of control. ;)

We are big Florida Gator fans in our family, although my best friend's in-laws are huge Ohio State fans. Enjoy the game!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Helen, thanks for all the lovely compliment on TRD! We enjoy "seeing" you there as one of our regular visitors. :)

PJ's right about JQ--she is a really lovely person.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi, Christine! We are definitely planning on being in Nashville in 2010! PJ and I had such a great time in D.C. this summer--meeting you was a real treat!--that we convinced Buffie and Andrea that they MUST attend National!

We had loads of fun with the Squawkers this week. Glad you were able to stop in!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wooohooooo!!! The Dishers are here!

I just adore your new site and think it came into the cyber world not only with a bang but with a sense of style unlike any other....

And I'd say that even if there WEREN'T turtles involved :-)

As to a blog...I like the community that develops within one. Whatever the inciting post...review, guest author, discussion of truck nuts...it's the friends who spend the day bringing their own unique take on the topic that makes it fun. And yeah....being an instigator of such sometimes...I like when it goes off on ROFL tangents.

As to books...I have discovered some MARVOLOUS new authors that are now must buys. And in discovering them, have broadened my horizons in the sub genres I read.

And as an historical author...YAY that those were your first loves!

Now, Demetrius left about 8 am for Atlanta Buffie...Watch out the door for a chrome plated chariot...

  18. Oh, and LOVE the group pick...Hmmmmm.....now whoever TOOK that picture did a great job

Yes, we were fortunate to find a photographer of supreme skill and insight. *vbg*

  20. Joanie, would you consider being our personal photographer? We could pay you in turtles. :)

  21. As to books...I have discovered some MARVOLOUS new authors that are now must buys. And in discovering them, have broadened my horizons in the sub genres I read.

I love being introduced to debut and new-to-me authors through the blogs I visit.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Speaking of books: What are y'all reading these days? Any must-buys that I need to add to my tbb list?

I've begun my annual Christmas romance reading and re-reading. Currently working on Tina Leonard's The Cowboy From Christmas Past, a time-travel from Harlequin American Romance. It has a hunky cowboy, a sweet baby and a little Christmas magic. Just my kind of romance! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good morning, everyone! Thank you, Banditas, for hosting us today!

Congrats on the GR, lime! 200 blogs? Are they all romance? I didn't even know there was that many romance blogs out there. Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks, Helen! You are one of the important components that make our blog a great place! We love when you visit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks, Christine! You're not planning on coming to Nationals next year? Say it ain't so! We do plan to be there and I'd love to finally meet you in person. I hope you change your mind!

Don't you love it when she talks Australian? Gives me tingles! :-)

    MWAH! Love you Christine!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Andrea, we're going to kidnap Christine and drag her across the ocean. Can't have her skipping Nationals. It's far too important to her career (at least, that's what we're telling her husband, who will have to do most of the kidnapping for us!).

    :-)

  28. Joan said: As to books...I have discovered some MARVOLOUS new authors that are now must buys. And in discovering them, have broadened my horizons in the sub genres I read.

Boy can I relate to that, Joanie! My TBR pile -- er, mountain -- is growing everyday. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  29. Don't you love it when she talks Australian? Gives me tingles! :-)

I do love it, Kirsten. Especially when I can listen to her do it in person!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm all for a good kidnapping, Kirsten! Mwahahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am so far behind on my tbr pile I may never catch up, but that is okay, I get nervous if I don't have a new book to pick up. Like you PJ I have started my Christmas reads, I am starting with some old Regency Christmas that includes Mary Balogh shorts.
I don't think it is any particular subject that draws me out on the blogs, it is just if I have something to share. If the topic is about writing in particular then I don't share because I am not a writer so I don't have an opinion. I love the chance to hear from any authors which is why I come by the blogs every day, I don't go to 200 but I do visit some every day.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ladies, I am thrilled for you to have created a fabulous new spot on the web for us all to gather. I am very picky with my blogs (not enough hours in the day to visit HALF of the ones I like) but I seem to find myself on the Dish all the time! You create a fantastic community. I just have to stop lurking all the time and join in. Bad habit, I know.

(((HUGS))) and congratulations on the new venture! We're behind you 200%!

    ReplyDelete
  33. PJ, almost! Limecello, congrats.

Limecello, "chatty Cathy" is the life of blogging. Without comments, a blog just sort of hangs there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi, Helen--

I tend to forget you're going into summer while we're sliding toward winter. Sort of. The temperature here yesterday was in the high 60s, not really what I expect in November.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Buffie, you're at work? Oh, no! We'll send Sven over with goodies right away.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Joanie, I had to laugh at truck nuts! But I agree that blogs develop their own communities, their own sorts of vibes. What always baffles me is visiting a group blog where the members don't comment on the posts. Not much of a vibe going there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. PJ, what am I buying? Not much. I'm so far behind on my reading as it is and am trying to be better. I buy all the bandita books. On my to-buy list are Ilona Andrews' new series and Gena Showalter's new book (Playing with Fire?) and Julie Kenner's Tainted. The last book I bought was Ann Aguirre's Skin Game, written under her Ava Gray name.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kirsten, when you go kidnap Christine, can I go, too? I'd love to see where she and Fo hang out. And I'm for the idea. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kirsten said: (((HUGS))) and congratulations on the new venture! We're behind you 200%!

Thanks, Kirsten. The Banditas' support means the world to us! (((HUGS)))

  40. Hi, Dianna--I love Christmas books, too. I rarely buy anthologies, but I look for them at the holidays.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Joanie, have I told you lately how much I love you? Girl, you really know how to send the *right* gift.

Ahhh, Demetrius and his magical fingers are doing the trick!!!! I'm hiding him under my desk so the boss doesn't see him ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey Kristen! I'm so happy to know that you will be kidanpping Christine. I sure do want to me all of the Bandits at Nationals!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oops, sorry for the typo Kirsten!!!

And yes, please stop lurking! Join in and dish with us.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yes, Nancy, unfortunately my department is working today. We are so swamped with files!! Thanks so much for sending Sven. He just showed up and was not too happy to see Demetrius here. But I think I have convinced him there is enough room under my desk for both of them. I'm loving the extra attention :-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Good morning, you dishy ladies!

First of all,let me say how much I've enjoyed your debut. I love places I can go to get the straight dish on romance in all its various incarnations, & I love it even more when I know I can trust the source. So you girls get a big mmmmwah from me. :-)

As for what draws me to comment on a blog? I have to confess, it's usually a personal connection. The internet is such a huge, vast place, and I'm so wretched at reading (let alone appropriately responding to) social cues without the visual. I get nervous even talking on the phone to people I don't know well, so imagine me on the internet.

    Yeah, it gets scary. :-)

So I do much better if there's a personal connection of some sort. Which means those conferences we all go to where we actually put a name to the face, or sometimes even a lovely turtle (I'm thinking of you, PJ, you wonderful thing) to the face? It's totally worth the cost of going because it gives you the face to face connection. People remember that, the way they don't remember everything you said on line.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Holy crap!! More typos! It is hard to concentrate with Demetrius and Sven laving on the attention.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I seem to find myself on the Dish all the time! You create a fantastic community. I just have to stop lurking all the time and join in. Bad habit, I know.

Thanks, Kirsten. Now stop lurking and join the fun! :-D

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dianna, I'm a big fan of Christmas romances. Tis the season. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey Lime! The chook came back to the States for you! Congrats.

Hey Dishers! We're so happy to have you with us today and we are all THRILLED that you're starting up - actually have already started up! - The Dish.

As to commenting, I always have an opinion so commenting is usually my normal inclination. Where I DON'T comment is where the bloggers are negative. Where they're either mean or condescending or snarky about either the book being reviewed or about other authors or books. I f don't go back to read and I don't post. YOu can't ever "win" on a blog like that, nor can you change anyone's mind so...

I love it when you have bloggers who are present. Its so fun to stop by the Dish and see ya'll posting answers or, really, conversing with the posters. Ya'll do it, The Revengers do it, of course, as we all know. :> There are a lot of wonderful blogs out there where this is the case! :>

    ReplyDelete

Oh, Buffie, just what is Demetrius doing under your desk??!! *vbg*

    ReplyDelete
  53. Welcome ladies! I'm so glad you're blogging with us today. Then again, most of you are here every day and we love that. But it's nice that you are officially with us today.

I love your blog. While I don't have the chance to comment every day, I do read it every day.

As far as reading blogs, I only follow a few due to time restrictions. But I enjoy just about anything, a review, an interview, or a blogger talking about every day stuff. I find I comment more on the fun stuff than the author interviews or reviews. But that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wait, Demetrius is under YOUR desk? Who's under MY desk then?

*Suprise, shock, more surprise* Wellllll, helllloooooo, handsome!

    Snork.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Popping in briefly to wave madly and give hugs to our Dishy Dames! So glad you launched The Dish - it's such fun and reflects your personalities perfectly.

Can't wait to see you all again in Nashville.

As to what I like on a blog - a fun atmosphere and info about romances *g*. I've learned so much and been introduced to so many different authors since we launched Romance Bandits and I'm looking forward to still more at The Dish! I love all your reviews - they're written by people who love romances so they are so much more useful than other reviews, and they often speak to my reading soul.

I also like getting to know authors, so the more they interact with the commenters the better.

I must admit, my time to blog is so limited, I only have a couple I vist and then I read more often than I comment (but, I'm there lurking!)

  66. Pat, I too will miss RNTV, but I'm SO glad our Dish ladies as well as Trish and Anna, will be carrying on the "tradition" of such a positive place to hang out and talk books on the web. :>

Andrea, you'll have a blast in Nashville and Anna's just one of the many who will look forward to meeting YOU too. BTW, can't wait for our two favorite Aussies to get a gander at The Gaylord Opryland. (Christine, I'm just going to plan for you to BE there. Grins)

I've been LOL about people's names for their TBR piles - Mt. Everest, etc. - and will add that mine frequently gets called "The Leaning Tower of TBR"

    ReplyDelete
  67. Gannon, you have a wonderful imagination so I'm sure you can come up with some idea regarding Demetrius' magical fingers - hehehe!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thanks, Pat! Hope to see you at The Romance Dish soon!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Jeanne, I just KNEW I liked you!!! Always nice to know another woman who has a man under her desk - LOL!

  70. Well, I'm finally finished with work. Now I am heading out Christmas shopping with the hubby. The kids are staying at Grandma's house tonight, so it should be a fun date day for us. I'll try to check back in later today . . . all depends on the hubby's plans for me ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Wooohooo! The Dish girls are in the lair!

No worries ladies, I secretly ordered several extra hunky guys for the occasion.

I'm very excited about your addition to the Romance Book blog community.

As to what I like to read on a blog, reviews are always good because they bring me new insights into what an author is doing, and lead me to wonderful new books which I might otherwise pass by and miss.

But I also love reading personal stuff from the bloggers. Getting a peek inside the thought processes of each of you is something I'm looking forward to. I know it's a bit of an illusion, but when I've spent a while reading someone's blogs, I feel as though I know that person. And when we meet, it's much easier to fall right into a friendship. It's one of the cool, positive things about blogging communities IMO.

OH, yes, you WILL LOVE the Opryland Hotel. I'm sorry I didn't get to chime in on Jeanne's blog about it. I was out of town that day. But I drove down to have dinner with her while she was there last weekend and OMG! It had been a while since I was in there, and it's even more fabulous now. I predict it will be the best conference ever. Everybody is just more positive when surrounded by all that beauty! How can you not be?

  73. Sounds like a wonderful new blog. The most important thing for me is that there is give and take (lke this blog). Nothing bothers me more as when someone picks a topic and everyone gives their thoughts and the author never gets back to the blog. It's obvious that they just think they have to do a blog but aren't really interested so they pick the same old topics. Variety usually makes everyone happy. Lots of luck.

  74. I enjoy a little of everything on the blogs, reviews, talking to author, learning about new books. Its how I keep up with the world.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm still reeling from Lime's 200 blog list. I've recently cut back on my blog visits (modest in number by Lime's standards) because I need the writing time, but The Romance Dish became a must-visit-daily site from day one (as is Romance Bandits, of course). I love the reviews and the guests on the blogs I visit, but for me the deciding factor on whether I join in the discussion is the community itself--the personalities and the interactions.

I'm another who is reading Christmas books. I haven't started rereading yet because of so many new titles. My favorites of the 2009 reads so far are Courtney Milan's "This Wicked Gift" in The Heart of Christmas and Carla Kelly's "Christmas Promise" in A Regency Christmas. I'm currently reading Susan Wiggs's Lakeshore Christmas, and it is intensifying my eagerness for Daisy's story.

  76. Welcome, ladies!! I adore The Romance Dish - although I'm afraid all I've been able to do so far is lurk *sigh* All that will change now that I'm caught up writing-wise :-)

I enjoy a variety of topics on blogs even if I don't get a chance to comment as often as I'd like. I love discovering new-to-me authors the most! That's probably why my TBR pile just keeps growing and growing ;-)

  77. Cassondra said: But I also love reading personal stuff from the bloggers.

Very well said, Cassondra. And so true! It has happened to me many times (like when I met Buffie, Gannon and PJ) and I look forward to it happening again next year at Nationals when I meet all the Banditas (that I haven't already met) that attend. :)

  78. Thanks, catslady! And I totally agree--there must be give and take.

    Thanks, Virginia!

Janga, we're so glad that our place is a must-visit-daily site for you! We enjoy your visits!

  80. I like reading author interviews and reviews the best. But I can't stand snarky reviews.
I will not read a blog if it gets too political or if they engage in blog wars. That is a turn off.

  81. Yes, Buffie, I do have a very vivid imagination. *snork* Have a nice afternoon and evening alone with your hubby. I guess you won't need Demetrius and his magic fingers anymore. *g*

  82. No worries ladies, I secretly ordered several extra hunky guys for the occasion.

Cassondra, you're the woman!! We can never have too many hunky guys around. *g*

  83. A hearty welcome to the Lair, Romance Dish Divas! We're so glad you took up the baton for the gap left by Maria and Marisa.

I enjoy reading the blurbs about books and finding new authors to add to my list.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Catslady, I really enjoy the give and take in a blog. It's not much fun when the author of the blog is not around to comment.

Virginia, we hope that The Romance Dish can help you keep up with the world of romance. :)

  85. Janga, we are so happy that you visit with us every day! We love having you there. :)

Beth, we're glad to know you've been "lurking" and now that you're caught up on your writing, we look forward to chatting with you.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Mari, we don't like snarky reviews either and you'll never see one at The Romance Dish. I find them a big turn off, too.

IMHO, you can always find something positive say.

  87. Hi, Jo! Thanks for letting us hang out in the Lair today. It's like being invited to sit at the "cool" lunch table at school. :) We all know the Bandits are the coolest!

Me either, Mari! Which is why you won't see one at The Romance Dish.

Gannon hit the nail on the head when she said: IMHO, you can always find something positive say.

    My sentiments exactly. :)

Oh, I'm so glad you said that, Mari. I feel the same way.

It is interesting to me that when the Bandits came together, we were so fortunate to be 20 women of like mind on this issue. Postitive energy is good for everybody. It makes every situation win-win. I am a wuss about nastiness and will not tolerate it in my entertaiment venues. The world hits you with enough of that as it is.

Yes, lime, we did notice. Glad to have you back. :0) I have no clue how you ever visited 200 blogs, let alone commented on them. I barely keep up with two or three, and often have to remind myself that I've been away from favorites for too long. And most of the time I just lurk.

You are a far, far better woman than I am with your attendance record.

  93. Hey, I missed the turtles.

    Are there any left?

I caught one of the extra guys I scheduled sneaking off with a handful.

  94. lol everyone, I said *used* to visit 200 daily. And I wasn't joking about wondering if I'd graduate from law school. (Ok, so I was joking. Same as college.) Guess I should've devoted more time to my studies, huh :P

I need to bookmark the Romance Dish site... what also helped/make me "drop" blogs was changing laptops a few times... and time. And interest. :X Been suffering from all sorts of ennui. Sad.

And... since I mentioned it... the Buckeyes won! :D We're the outright Big Ten Champions, and going to the Rose Bowl! Whee! :D

  96. Oh, man, I'm SOOOOOOOOO late to the party. And I'm kinda like a shadowy hostess (hmm, that sounds like an idea for a new paranormal series!). Sorry, guys! I've had visitors so I've been off drinking with cool chicks like Amy Andrews and Robyn Grady and Trish Morey. You know, life is SOOOO tough sometimes.

Welcome, Andrea, Gannon, PJ and Buffie, to the lair. I love that photo of you that closed the blog. It gives exactly that wonderful bubbly, happy feeling I get when I'm with you guys. And you've translated that to the new site - yay, you!

Anyway, off to wade through 97 comments. Sheesh! No wonder the cabana boys have circles under their eyes!

  97. Hey, Lime, I love it when you turned up to my blog tour! Thanks for all the support. I used to visit a lot of blogs every day too but you know, a girl needs to actually write something so she can eat. And as you know, I LOVE to eat, especially Tim Tams!

By the way, Dishies, I've missed Squawk something awful too. I think you're going to build up the same sort of community!

  99. Helen, it's painfully hot up in SEQ too. Wish we could get so rain. My lawn is as brown as a Tim Tam! And not nearly so delicious!

Oh, with blogs, what do I like to see? I'm with Christine - something a little bit different. But that could be because I'm at the end of a VERRRRRRRY long blog tour. I love fun questions, especially if they're a bit sexy or silly, like Tawny's. I love it when there's a game or a fantasy element. Actually a great question someone asked me recently was to write a blurb for my life in the style of a romance novel. That was a hoot.

  100. I'm baaaaack! Didja miss me? :)

Thanks for all the lovely words of encouragement. I'm glad that all of you who have stopped by The Romance Dish have enjoyed your visits. For those of you who haven't been over yet, we look forward to welcoming you!

Today's blog at The Romance Dish comes from our Cozy Kitchen. Our guest blogger, Jenn (who is my niece and a fabulous cook) is chatting about Thanksgiving recipes. She's shared her mom's sinfully delish sweet potato casserole recipe and Helen (our wonderful, mutual Aussie friend) has posted the recipe for her fab
    Christmas cake!

Wow! What a compliment! And coming from such a dear like you, Anna, it's even better. Mwaah!

  102. Holy cow--y'all have been rockin' the blog!

I had to run out for a while and then hit snags, but I'm back for the day now.

My first romance novels were YAs, the stories of the Parrish and Jordan families by Janet Lambert and the Beany Malone books of Lenora Mattingly Weber.

As for blogs, what draws me out is an interesting topic.

The first romances I bought as an adult were historicals. I still have the first one--Shirley Busbee's The Spanish Rose.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Buffie, the space under your desk must've been very, very crowded with both those hunky guys under it. I hope they made your day lively.

    ReplyDelete
  104. So Jeanne--who WAS that under your desk? *g*

    Snork!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Jeanne, I seldom comment on blogs. Lurking is more my inclination. If the day looks slow and I know the people hosting the blog or the guests, I'll dive in.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Anna, I tend to hover in Lurk Land with you. A person could spend the entire day commenting on blogs if she let herself.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Pat, I was also sorry to see RNTV go. It was a fun site for lurkers to drop into, and I'm glad some of it will continue on The Romance Dish.

  108. Andrea wrote: We want it to feel like family. :)

To me, that's important. I like a site where people feel welcome, where there's a feeling that at least some of the people hanging out know each other.

I cruise your site and lurk, but I think it's definitely that kind of atmosphere.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Cassondra, I'll depend on you and Jeanne and Trish to keep me from getting lost at the Opryland Hotel. Big hotels confuse me. *sigh*

  113. Beth, yay on being caught up on your writing! You go, girl!

I'm just looking forward to semester's end so I can read what I want. Including, eventually, whatever you just turned in.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Andrea, I think you'll get to meet lots of Banditas at National. We're working on getting the number as high as we can. It was nice to see you and M&M. I like getting to know people from their actual faces, even though my memory isn't always as good as I wish it were.

  115. Mari wrote: But I can't stand snarky reviews.I will not read a blog if it gets too political or if they engage in blog wars. That is a turn off.

I know some people enjoy blogs like that, and that's fine. But it isn't for me. I spent enough of my adult life dealing with other people's conflicts.

We have a range of political views in the Lair, so we generally try to avoid that topic. Why create divisions, among ourselves or our visitors, if you don't have to? We like each other, and we try to focus on our compatibilities (is that really a word?) rather than our differences.

Quarreling blogs have their place, I think, but it isn't one that draws me.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Hey, Jo--Not that any of us needs help adding to the TBR pile, but I enjoy finding new authors on blogs, too. We recently had someone complain about the Romance Bandits making her TBR pile grow, and Joan said, "What do you think it's done to mine?!"

    Amen, sister!

  119. Hey, Anna C.--the "shadowy hostess," huh? That does sound very paranormal. In fact . . . never mind! *g*

I don't see how you keep up with all the blogs you do. All of our published authors have been beating the blog trail with their new releases, and that feels incredibly, almost relentlessly social to me. But then, I like to go hide from time to time.

  122. Hi guys -

Sorry to be coming by so late! I was watching my alumna mater, Ohio State, beat Michigan in a bid for the Rose Bowl - Go Bucks!

    Okay, settling down now...

I recently sat next to an avid romance reader on a four hour flight. I spotted the Sherrilyn Kenyon book in her lap and we were off and running. We talked nonstop for four hours! Romance readers are the best, most generous, most interesting people to walk this planet. I'm so glad you've created a forum to share about books, authors, trends. Wish I could stop by more often but deadlines are brutal.

Thanks so much for joining us on the bandits.

  125. Nancy, I do believe Demetrius DID start the under the desk thing. However, as to who was under MY desk...bwah-ha-ha! I'll never tell. He's too hunky to share and if I let the secret out, Buffie will want him for her Hunk Day.

    Mine! Mine, my preciousssssss!

    Grins.

Jeanne, I guess you don't subscribe to the belief that "sharing is caring." LOL

    ReplyDelete
  132. Gannon, I have my sharing limit, too. Chocolate, for example. And when the dh and I married, I told him I would share almost everything, but usually not desserts (long story from my childhood). He has learned to live with that.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Nancy, that's what my daughter used to say when she was in preschool. But of course it only applied when SHE wanted something, not when anyone else wanted to share something she had.

  139. Just got in from work and had to stop by to say hello to the fabulous Dishes!! Can't wait to visit this blog as it involves some of my favorite people on the planet!!

I love blogs that give me the lowdown on the newest books coming out. I love blogs that feature the authors of said books so I can pick their brains about research and process.

I love call story blogs because they give me hope!

I love the nice gossipy blogs about our favorite hero inspirations, what trends are working in romance, what trends aren't, what readers would LIKE to see in romances, what they love in romance and what they hate to see.

I am a historical romance reader and writer first and foremost, but I read across all genres. I read YA to know which books to get for my niece. As long as the writing is good and the characters are interesting and intriguing I will read almost anything.

Good luck with this blog, ladies, but I know you won't need it. You are going to ROCK !!

    ReplyDelete
  140. Louisa, I have a YA recommendation for you. Patricia Wrede wrote a series of books in a "fractured fairy tale" vein (according to her website) that starts with one about a princess going off to live with a dragon and the hapless knights who try to rescue her against her will. They're very funny. The boy loved them before he got too big to read books about girls. :-/

    Dealing with Dragons (1990)
    Searching for Dragons (1991)
    Calling on Dragons (1993)
    Talking To Dragons (1985)

  141. Thanks, Nancy! Sounds like a perfect gift for the niece for Christmas! I owe you!

  151. When I visit a blog, I like to interact with the authors who are posting there that day. Nothing is more impressive to me than authors who take an interest in their readers and try to leave a personal comment for each one. Our own Anna Campbell is a good example of one of those authors. She's also a good example of the type of author who's fun to read. Whenever I see that Anna has written a blog post, I know I'm in for a treat! Fortunately, this is true of all the Banditas. Whenever I come to this blog, I never know what I'm in for. but it's always a pleasure. And what's great about this blog is the caliber of people who comment on it. So if you Dishy ladies are fortunate enough to have half that caliber on your site (which I also enjoy, btw), then you are fortunate indeed.

    SNORK!!!

Louisa, I second Nancy's recommendation of the Wrede books. I adored them, even as an adult reader. I'd also recommend the Mercedes Lackey beginning of her Valdemar series:
    Arrows of the Queen ('87)
    Arrow's Flight ('87)
    Arrow's Fall ('88)

The good thing is that they're a ton more books if she likes those. More than a dozen if I'm remembering right. :>

What does she read right now? Nancy and I are your girls if it's fantasy related. Grins.

Otherwise, it's got to be OLD YA for me to recommend it...like L.M. Montgomery old. Snork

The hubby and I just got home after 6 1/2 hours of Christmas shopping. We had a wonderful time, just the two of us. Now we are going to snuggle in bed and watch movies. And maybe, just maybe, play who's under the desk!!!! LOL!!!!

Thank you Bandits for inviting us to spend the day with you. You ladies have been so supportive and encouraging!! I must say that I feel like I have a great friend in each and every one of you. I can't wait to hug you all at Nationals!!!

  167. PJ, I'm sorry your friend had a rough day. I hope she's feeling better.

The turnout wasn't high. I don't think the event got any publicity beyond what Sabrina herself did. As in, I think the store did very little, if any. The dh and I went, stayed for a while, and then had dinner out, which was nice.
