9. Plastic sleds. I do have my dad's sled from when he was a boy. My mother painted a snowy tree scene and a cardinal on it and it's in the corner of my living room.
10. Sledding. Used to ice skate as a kid.
11. No mistletoe. But Jerry brought some of the real stuff back from TX for me when we were dating. He had to climb down into a ditch and reach up into a mesquite tree to get it. Good thing rattlesnakes hibernate in winter.
12. Stockings are hung on the t.v. entertainment center. We pretend that it's a fireplace?!
Christmas movies are fun to watch, so I guess I'd have those.

ReplyDeleteDo you have your tree up? When we used to get real trees, we couldn't put them up until a few days before Christmas so they'd last until New Years. I do miss having a real tree but I don't miss the runny nose I had every year from my allergies :-)

Yay, Emmanuelle! I'm glad someone picked ice skating *g* I love to skate although the older I get, the less I enjoy being out in the cold. And even though the ice rink in town is enclosed, it's still really cold :-)

ReplyDeleteLOL, Gillian! We made the same discovery this year *g* Just as I discovered that while one strand of old fashioned lights were plenty to cover one evergreen bush out front, one strand of LED lights isn't quite enough :-)
I plan on having a Holiday Movie-athon this week, too! And I'm forcing my teens to watching them all with me...bwhahaha!

1. Real or artificial? Real, but I buy them with a rootball in a big plastic tub so I can plant them after Christmas. I have some really gorgeous spruce and fir trees on my property now!
2. White or colored lights? White, except in my late Great Dane’s tree outside the kitchen window. It has white lights because she was a white dog and blue lights for her sweet blue eyes. I miss her!
3. Blinking or static? Blinking. Keeps the dogs and cats entertained!
4. Tree skirt or bare? Tree skirt! I’m a Southern girl. No nekkid trees here!
Decorations:
5. Red and green or silver and blue? Depends. I have several themes of decorations boxed up – Dogs and cats, Teddy Bears, Birds, Victorian and Regency decorations.
6. Old fashioned lights or LED? Old fashioned.
7. Outside decorations - simple or the more the merrier? A lot considering the only creatures who see them every night are my outside dogs and the neighbor’s cows!
8. Gingerbread houses - edible or just for looks? Edible !!

9. Sleds...runner or plastic? Not much use here in the South, but when we lived in England we had some grand sleds with runners! I think my youngest brother still has his.

ReplyDeleteBeth, what a list! Wow. We're actually putting up our tree today, which is late for us. As the dh pointed out, at least it'll still be fresh when the boy's girlfriend comes next week.

3. Static. Just FYI we have some Star Trek ships that plug into the light string and, in theory, then flash their running lights--except every time we try it, they short out the whole string. *sigh*
4. Tree skirt--a beautiful one made for us by a friend when the boy was small. It's holly on black, with gold highlights on the holly and gold braid around the edge and four holiday cross-stitched ovals around it.
5. Mostly red and green but other colors mixed in.
6. Old-fashioned lights, I think, since I have no idea what LED would be.
7. Outside, very simple, one string of the big, old-style lights, around the porch. I love to drive around and look at other people's, though, a habit I think I got from my parents.
8. No gingerbread house--too labor intensive, but I love to look at other people's.
9. No sled. No snow, alas.
10. Again, no snow, alas.
11. No mistletoe--poisonous if the berries fall, and we don't trust Herself not to sample them.
12. Stockings (handmade by the dh's sister, and all 3 matching) on the mantel.
On the toughies--I choose tape. I can tear paper if I have to.
Egg nog--we have it every year with the cringe-proof fruitcake.

If one of these was the ONLY beverage you could drink through the entire season, which would it be: eggnog or mulled wine? water. wine if I HAD to pick, b/c I'm vegan, but I can't have alcohol, so really, must be neither
Maureen, staying inside with a hot drink is my favorite cold winter activity as well. I do enjoy sledding but only in short amounts then it's back inside for me. My older daughter and I are happy to curl up with a good book while everyone else is outside trudging around in the snow :-)

ReplyDeleteMine is a patchwork design I sewed years ago but before that, we used a sheet :-) My mom always had a tree skirt so I always wanted one I could hand down to my kids but I noticed this year ours is getting a bit worn.

We line the kids stockings on the couch, too! But when I was a kid, my mom hung ours along the picture window in the living room and one year, my sister's fell onto a turned on lamp. By the time we figured out what had happened, a huge hole had burned in it.
She was much more careful about where she hung them after that ;-)

Beth, you need to brave the after-Christmas sales and nab a tree skirt. I got a gorgeous one that is deep burgundy sating with dark green trim, quilted with gold thread and trim. It was 80% off and was still around $30. After-Christmas sales!
ReplyDeleteDeb, I have an old runner sled I use for decoration, too *g* We much prefer the plastic ones for sledding since the snow really has to be packed down on a hard surface for the runners to really fly. But those plastic ones are super fast!
ReplyDeleteSuz, I'm all about simple outside decorations, too. We have white lights on two small bushes and our crab apple tree and electric candles in the windows. I love coming home after dark and seeing how pretty it looks :-)

Gigi, as I've said, I highly recommend the plastic sleds. And they can be used year 'round. We have a huge tarp we put on our front hill in the summer, spray it with the hose, grease it up with some dish soap and the kids fly down our homemade water slide on sleds :-)

Scissors - like everyone else said, I can rip, but tape is hard to beat.
Eggnog - but only if it's made by this guy at my DH's office who makes superior, magnificent eggnog that's actually tasty and drinkable. Grins. Otherwise? I'll skip both and stick with Diet Coke! Snork!

no tree opinions, but thought I'd mention how vastly entertained by a neighborhood family who wanted to go with something different that light-up reindeer on their lawn, and chose poloar bears instead. Only they look like capybaras - those giant guinea pig rodents from south america. my fave seasonal decoration in the neigborhood.
ReplyDeleteSnorking over the white, snowy capybaras, M! Too funny! My fav in our neighborhood is the dancing santa on one neighbor's front porch. It's got a sensor and the first day they put it up, I saw the postman go up on the porch, focused on the mail.

But that hasn't stopped us from doing one of the traditions that's been passed down from my family. Each year after we decorate the tree we all look at it and say, "You know, I think that's the nicest tree we've ever had." Even though it's the same artifical tree year after year ;-)

Oh, Lime, your skating story has me shivering. As a kid and into my early teens I spent a lot of time at our ice rink and I've seen some close calls. Mostly what sticks in my mind is how the boys loved to skate circles around everyone and then spray them when they stopped :-)

I've never even attempted to make eggnog (and I never will *g*) but when I hear someone is making it, I'm reminded of that TV show Sisters. Did anyone else watch that? It had Sela Ward and Bruce Springsteen's ex-wife and two other actresses I can't think of right now...anyway, in one episode, they made eggnog from bad eggs and were all horribly sick.
So now I'm afraid to make it :-)

ReplyDeleteActually I looked up a recipe for eggnog and it looks like liver failure mixed with a heart attack! This recipe had full cream milk, cream, a dozen eggs, bourbon AND brandy. And a ton of sugar as well, I think.
And the really horrible thing is I started to think maybe I should make some. Do you think I could substitute whisky for the bourbon? I'm not a bourbon drinker but there's sure some scotch in the house (purely for Santa's use!).
Bing actually preferred whiskey to bourbon in his eggnog....

Static. Just FYI we have some Star Trek ships that plug into the light string and, in theory, then flash their running lights--except every time we try it, they short out the whole string. *sigh*

One of our favorite ornaments is one from my husband's grandmother. It looks like a little circus tent and has a fan inside and you hang it directly over a light bulb so the fan will twirl. We had several but are down to just the one now.

Beth, It is really nice to walk by a tree and know that it was my Christmas tree two years ago or five years ago. It's almost like having a pet tree! LOL The Leland cypress have grown the most, but the firs and the spruces are catching up. I realize that the lob lolly pines are the Southern tree, but I hate them. So when I plant a retired Christmas tree we eliminate the pines around it to give it room to grow. I hope one day to have five acres of nothing but retired Christmas trees and hardwoods and dogwoods on my property.

Anna C., that sounds like a perfect egg nog recipe. It really shouldn't contain anything remotely good for you, except, arguably, egg.
ReplyDeleteYou probably could substitute whiskey for bourbon. You could try it in one glass or so and see how it does. Around here, egg nog comes with brandy, I think, so if you have any of that on hand, it might do.
When I was in college, we had wassail once, and that was pretty terrific. Although lighting a match in the room was not recommended.

ReplyDeleteThe dh bought some pasteurized egg nog at the store, and we have brandy that's open because the first batch of cringe-proof fruitcake is in the oven. So that might do, though it's not the same as home-made, which he says makes him nervous because of the whole raw egg thing.

And as someone who has wrapped many a present without tape let me just say, it can be done! Especially if you have cute stickers large enough to hold the flaps of paper together ;-)
When I was in college, we had wassail once, and that was pretty terrific. Although lighting a match in the room was not recommended.

Lime, I don't blame you for not wanting to go back. Nothing nearly as horrible as your ice skating accident happened to me the time I went skiing and still you couldn't pay me to get back on the slopes.
