Christmas Q & A

by Beth

I thought we'd do a quick Q&A for today's blog. So I give you my...

12 (and a few extra) Questions of Christmas!

Christmas trees:

1. Real or artificial?

2. White or colored lights?

3. Blinking or static?

4. Tree skirt or bare?

Decorations:

5. Red and green or silver and blue?

6. Old fashioned lights or LED?

7. Outside decorations - simple or the more the merrier?

8. Gingerbread houses - edible or just for looks?

Fun stuff:

9. Sleds...runner or plastic?

10. Ice skating, skiing or sledding?

11. Do you hang mistletoe?

12. Where do you hang your stockings?

The toughies:

If you had to choose (and lets pretend you DO have to choose *g*), which of these would you give up for the entire Holiday season:

Christmas music or Christmas movies?

What if you were wrapping and could have either Scissors or scotch tape (and no, you don't have any gift bags available either *g*) which would you choose to keep?

If one of these was the ONLY beverage you could drink through the entire season, which would it be: eggnog or mulled wine?

And don't forget, each commenter will be put in the drawing to win a rooster themed gift for our 12 Bandita Days of Christmas and I'll throw in TWO books from my stash of goodies. Winner's choice!

I would probably give up the Christmas movies. I need the Christmas music to get me into the holiday mood. I can do without the scissors, but I do need the Scotch tape. Definitely mulled wine over the eggnog.

    Congrats on the GR, Linda.

    12. mantle
13.toughie...I'd say I'd forgo the movies because it seems I see so little TV these days it would be easier to miss (says she who watched Elf last night).
    14. I'd keep the scissors as I have enough industrial strength packing tape around here to use as a substitute for scotch tape. However, I've used glue, duct tape, and even pins to wrap presents in the psst when I couldn't find the blasted tape.

Bloggers are posting kissing scenes (or almost kissing scenes...my personal favorite) from their WIPs (or other works) If you aren't a writer, then post your favorite kissing scene from a book or movie. There's a Mr. Linky to list those who are participating so you can read all the sigh-inducing scenes posted.

    11. No mistletoe. But Jerry brought some of the real stuff back from TX for me when we were dating. He had to climb down into a ditch and reach up into a mesquite tree to get it. Good thing rattlesnakes hibernate in winter.
    12. Stockings are hung on the t.v. entertainment center. We pretend that it's a fireplace?!
Christmas movies are fun to watch, so I guess I'd have those.

  20. Yep, Linda, the Golden Rooster is indeed yours for the day! You'll have to ask Joan if he's any good at baking cookies *g*

Do you have your tree up? When we used to get real trees, we couldn't put them up until a few days before Christmas so they'd last until New Years. I do miss having a real tree but I don't miss the runny nose I had every year from my allergies :-)

  23. Yay, Emmanuelle! I'm glad someone picked ice skating *g* I love to skate although the older I get, the less I enjoy being out in the cold. And even though the ice rink in town is enclosed, it's still really cold :-)

I love how cute Christmas stockings are but I hate trying to find things to fill them with - especially now that my kids are older. They end up getting toothbrushes and candy *g* A weird combination but it works!

    ReplyDelete
  24. LED. But we made the switch just this year, and found out the old and new really don't match. So I need to buy more LED at the after Christmas sales.

LOL, Gillian! We made the same discovery this year *g* Just as I discovered that while one strand of old fashioned lights were plenty to cover one evergreen bush out front, one strand of LED lights isn't quite enough :-)

I plan on having a Holiday Movie-athon this week, too! And I'm forcing my teens to watching them all with me...bwhahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  25. What fun, Beth! Yay on getting the rooster, Linda!!

I think I'll just answer a few questions and keep my comment short LOL.

I love white blinking lights on a real, piney-smelling tree.

Uh, do I even know what LED Christmas lights are, duh?

I hate all those too-elaborate, out of control decs on everyone's lawns. Simplicity, please!

Probably I'd give up the music because there'd be some songs in the movies. I hope!

Definitely I'd keep the scotch tape. I can tear a pretty mean straight line!

    Wonderful, entertaining post, Beth!

  26. Yay, Linda! Have a great time with him!

    Christmas trees:

    1. Real or artificial? Real, but I buy them with a rootball in a big plastic tub so I can plant them after Christmas. I have some really gorgeous spruce and fir trees on my property now!

    2. White or colored lights? White, except in my late Great Dane’s tree outside the kitchen window. It has white lights because she was a white dog and blue lights for her sweet blue eyes. I miss her!

    3. Blinking or static? Blinking. Keeps the dogs and cats entertained!

    4. Tree skirt or bare? Tree skirt! I’m a Southern girl. No nekkid trees here!

    Decorations:

    5. Red and green or silver and blue? Depends. I have several themes of decorations boxed up – Dogs and cats, Teddy Bears, Birds, Victorian and Regency decorations.

    6. Old fashioned lights or LED? Old fashioned.

    7. Outside decorations - simple or the more the merrier? A lot considering the only creatures who see them every night are my outside dogs and the neighbor’s cows!

    8. Gingerbread houses - edible or just for looks? Edible !!

    Fun stuff:

    9. Sleds...runner or plastic? Not much use here in the South, but when we lived in England we had some grand sleds with runners! I think my youngest brother still has his.

    10. Ice skating, skiing or sledding? It would have to be skiing or sledding. I am TERRIBLE at ice skating.

    11. Do you hang mistletoe? Yes!

    12. Where do you hang your stockings? On the mantel over my fireplace, of course!

    The toughies:

If you had to choose (and lets pretend you DO have to choose *g*), which of these would you give up for the entire Holiday season:

Christmas music or Christmas movies? Christmas music actually. I can play it any other time of the year if I like. The movies I usually only watch at Christmas.

What if you were wrapping and could have either Scissors or scotch tape (and no, you don't have any gift bags available either *g*) which would you choose to keep? Scotch tape. I can always tear the paper and fold it into neatness

If one of these was the ONLY beverage you could drink through the entire season, which would it be: eggnog or mulled wine?
Neither actually. If I had to choose it would be mulled wine. Might like to try that once before I die. Eggnog? NO, THANK YOU!!

    4. Tree skirt or bare?
    Skirt of course!

O_o only one? Uh, I wouldn't wrap them, then, likely. OR really, I'd go to the store and buy whatever I didn't have :P
If one of these was the ONLY beverage you could drink through the entire season, which would it be: eggnog or mulled wine?
Neither- we don't drink either :P Liquor though, yes, or champagne :D

    Congrats on the GR, Linda!

    5. Red and green
    6. Old-Fashioned
    7. Simple outside decorations
    8. Edible gingerbread houses, kids love it.
    9. Sleds - runner
    10. Ice skating
    11. Mistletoe some years
    12. Stockings, no chimney, use bannister
Probably give up movies, like Christmas carols during the season
Wrapping, give up the scissors, I can tear, need that tape to keep it together.
Love eggnog, not one for mulled wine.

  32. 1. Artificial (love the smell of real, but not the mess).
    2. Colored (white is too boring).
    3. Static (blinking drives me nuts).
    4. Tree Skirt (or something to cover up the stand).
    5. Red & Green (although our tree is starting to look like Steeler Gold & Black!)
    6. Old Fashioned (LED is a nice energy saver, but they really aren't bright enough).
    7. Simple (less can be more).
    8. Looks (not a fan of gingerbread anyway).
    9. Plastic (safer - I'm a hazard waiting to happen).
    10. Sledding (love the rush of going down the hill).
    11. No (never have).
    12. Fireplace, of course!
I could probably give up the movies easier than the music. Finding time to watch is hard!
I'd keep the tape. I can always rip the paper.
Never had eggnog nor mulled wine, but would probably pick the wine.

    Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Linda, you're a new squeeze for our wicked bird, aren't you? Congratulations! Don't give him egg nog. He goes completely CRRRRRAAAAAZZZZYYYYY! I said don't... I said... Oh, man, I warned you!

I must say it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Beth, great quiz. Here are my answers:

I should say real but these days I have an artificial one so I guess I have to fess up.

    Colored.

    Blinking.

Skirt (if it was real!) Hate seeing those undies on a tree!

    Silver and Blue.

    LED

The more the merrier (again I'm a slack tart but the neighbours go to a lot of trouble and it gives me some entertainment!)

Never seen a gingerbread house but I suspect it would be just for looks.

Sled in 100% humidity and the ridiculous temps we're getting? You're kidding, aren't you? Something I can put in the swimming pool instead, please!

Snort, none of the above. Again, a nice swimming pool is what I like at this time of year.

    No.

    From my slender thighs ;-)

    Christmas movies.

    Scissors.

I don't particularly like mulled wine - it's like gluhwein, isn't it? All spicey? Bleuch! And would you believe I've never had eggnog. I've got some eggs in the fridge. Maybe I should make up a batch just to try it. Hic!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anna, he doesn't do that much for me either!

    ReplyDelete
  35. By the way, that's I want the tape and I'd get rid of the scissors!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anna, you're swimming! And you have blessed, beautiful humidity! We are freezing, the static electricity is ridiculous, and my husband jumps out of his skin every time I touch him because my hands are verrrry cold...(actually that part is funny).

I think a frozen eggnog shake would taste good in the summer. Especially with a heavy shot of spiced rum.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Congrats Linda he may be a bit quiet today after the fun time he had at the picnic yesterday.

  38. Linda, congrats on taking home the rooster! He'll do party cleanup but only if you make him. I hope the party goes well.

Beth, what a list! Wow. We're actually putting up our tree today, which is late for us. As the dh pointed out, at least it'll still be fresh when the boy's girlfriend comes next week.

    Answers:

    1. Real
    2. Colored
    3. Static. Just FYI we have some Star Trek ships that plug into the light string and, in theory, then flash their running lights--except every time we try it, they short out the whole string. *sigh*
    4. Tree skirt--a beautiful one made for us by a friend when the boy was small. It's holly on black, with gold highlights on the holly and gold braid around the edge and four holiday cross-stitched ovals around it.
    5. Mostly red and green but other colors mixed in.
    6. Old-fashioned lights, I think, since I have no idea what LED would be.
    7. Outside, very simple, one string of the big, old-style lights, around the porch. I love to drive around and look at other people's, though, a habit I think I got from my parents.
    8. No gingerbread house--too labor intensive, but I love to look at other people's.
    9. No sled. No snow, alas.
    10. Again, no snow, alas.
    11. No mistletoe--poisonous if the berries fall, and we don't trust Herself not to sample them.
    12. Stockings (handmade by the dh's sister, and all 3 matching) on the mantel.

On the toughies--I choose tape. I can tear paper if I have to.

Egg nog--we have it every year with the cringe-proof fruitcake.

    Fun blog, Beth!

    4. tree shirt
    5. A mixture, lots of Hallmark ornaments
    6. old fashioned
    7. simple
    8. Just for looks
    9. runner
    10. skating
    11. nope
    12. By the chimney, with care...not really, on the wall actually.
    13. Xmas music (that was tough)
    14. tape. I can always rip the paper with my teeth.
    15. Eggnog

    Happy Holidays!

  40. Gillian, call me immature (yeah, right, and your mother wears army boots! LOL) but I laughed at your poor husband jumping every time you touch him! It's kinda like the sexual awareness part of a romance novel with extra zing! Snort!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Congrats, Linda! And you got all your answers in first, too. Please don't let the GR help you wrap gifts. He only wants to make "confetti" and make a mess!

Beth, here's my shot at it.

    1. Artificial
    2. Colored
    3. Static
    4. Tree skirt
    5. Red and green
    6. Old fashioned until they burn out. All the new ones are LED.
    7. Simple...if any get put out at all!
    8. Just for looks!
    9. Runner
    10. Ice skating (I go slow, but can do it)
    11. Fresh when I can get it, otherwise fake.
    12. Above the fireplace from hangers on the mantel

    Hm...these toughies are TOUGH!

Music - but I'm assuming we can still sing them rather than listen?

I'd keep Scotch tape, because I can cut with other things or tear it.

    Mulled wine - less calories!

  42. Gillian, I love 'Christmas In Connecticut' and the Banditas have been talking about 'White Christmas' since last night via e-mail!

"Snow...I want to wash my hands, my face my hair with snow!"

    ReplyDelete
  43. Donna, we watched 'Elf' last night for the second time! We had watched it last Sunday while decorating the tree. Love that movie!

"You sit on a throne of lies!"

    ReplyDelete
  44. LOL, Donna. I'm notorious for running out of things I need so there have been plenty of times where I've used masking tape, mailing tape, glue and even stickers to wrap presents. And except for Christmas gifts, I'll use whatever paper I can find. Or even the comics from the Sunday newspaper :-)

  46. Deb, your "TV as fireplace" reminds me of the movie "Better Off Dead" where they had a movie of a fire playing on the TV. Ha!

  47. PJ, we don't hang mistletoe either probably because my family never did when I was growing up. Funny how traditions get passed on from one generation to the next without even thinking about them *g*

    10. Ice skating, skiing or sledding? skating
    11. Do you hang mistletoe? want to
    12. Where do you hang your stockings? don't

If you had to choose (and lets pretend you DO have to choose *g*), which of these would you give up for the entire Holiday season:

Christmas music or Christmas movies? movies

What if you were wrapping and could have either Scissors or scotch tape (and no, you don't have any gift bags available either *g*) which would you choose to keep? tape - I can rip to fit ;)

If one of these was the ONLY beverage you could drink through the entire season, which would it be: eggnog or mulled wine? water. wine if I HAD to pick, b/c I'm vegan, but I can't have alcohol, so really, must be neither

    ReplyDelete
  49. Maureen, staying inside with a hot drink is my favorite cold winter activity as well. I do enjoy sledding but only in short amounts then it's back inside for me. My older daughter and I are happy to curl up with a good book while everyone else is outside trudging around in the snow :-)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Virginia, is your mistletoe real? I'm not even sure where to buy real mistletoe but I've been thinking it would be a nice addition to our decorations *g*

I love silver and blue outside decorations! The blue just pops against all of our snow :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Blodeuedd, a tree skirt is wrapped around the base of the tree to hide the trunk/tree stand *g*

Mine is a patchwork design I sewed years ago but before that, we used a sheet :-) My mom always had a tree skirt so I always wanted one I could hand down to my kids but I noticed this year ours is getting a bit worn.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Bloggers are posting kissing scenes (or almost kissing scenes...my personal favorite) from their WIPs (or other works) If you aren't a writer, then post your favorite kissing scene from a book or movie.

Oh, what a fun idea, Sherrinda! I adore kissing scenes *g*

We line the kids stockings on the couch, too! But when I was a kid, my mom hung ours along the picture window in the living room and one year, my sister's fell onto a turned on lamp. By the time we figured out what had happened, a huge hole had burned in it.

She was much more careful about where she hung them after that ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Christmas movies -there's music in the movies, after all

LOL, Minna! This is exactly what my daughter said when I asked her this question *g*

    ReplyDelete
  54. Beth, you need to brave the after-Christmas sales and nab a tree skirt. I got a gorgeous one that is deep burgundy sating with dark green trim, quilted with gold thread and trim. It was 80% off and was still around $30. After-Christmas sales!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Deb, I have an old runner sled I use for decoration, too *g* We much prefer the plastic ones for sledding since the snow really has to be packed down on a hard surface for the runners to really fly. But those plastic ones are super fast!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Suz, I'm all about simple outside decorations, too. We have white lights on two small bushes and our crab apple tree and electric candles in the windows. I love coming home after dark and seeing how pretty it looks :-)

It seems as if there aren't as many houses decorated in my town this year. Not sure if that's my imagination or not *g*

    ReplyDelete
  57. Gigi, as I've said, I highly recommend the plastic sleds. And they can be used year 'round. We have a huge tarp we put on our front hill in the summer, spray it with the hose, grease it up with some dish soap and the kids fly down our homemade water slide on sleds :-)

    Thanks for stopping by!

-I'd give up the music in a heartbit. I get sick of hearing it in every store as is.

    -Eggnog definitely.

  63. Hey Linda! You got the boide! Go you! The GR better be glad he's not at MY house today (or Christie's!) We measured one spot at 24.5" of snow. Grins. It's taken all day to dig out the cars.

    Okay, Beth, here we go:

    1. Real - love the smell and just read that it takes 20 years of use for an artificial tree to "lose" it's carbon footprint. Would never have expected THAT! ha!

    2. White

    3. Static

    4. Tree Skirt - Like Louisa, I'm thinkin' that if'n yer Southern like me, you gotta have a tree skirt. Grins.

    5. - All of the above (Colors, that is)

    6. Old fashioned lights so far.

    7. The more the merrier, but stopping before you hit Tacky-City-Display status.

    8. Edible Gingerbread houses, allll the way. Not that we DO eat them, but stilll...

9 - Sleds, again, all of the above, with some boogie boards thrown in for good measure. ha! If you wax the runners on the old fashioned kind, you get pretty good speed even on lighter snow.

    10. Another "All of the Above" answer - I love winter sports. ALL of them. Skating, skiing, sledding, tobogganing, snowman making, snow creme making (takes on a sport capacity if you're trying recipes, you know!)

    11. Mistletoe - yes, more kisses are better, always. Nancy, I have mine in a gold mesh bag, because it's real, dried mistletoe and I don't want pups to munch should something fall...

    12. Stocking are on the fireplace, yes, we have a real one.

    Toughies:
Movies - I can read or imagine, but don't make me give up the carols.

Scissors - like everyone else said, I can rip, but tape is hard to beat.

Eggnog - but only if it's made by this guy at my DH's office who makes superior, magnificent eggnog that's actually tasty and drinkable. Grins. Otherwise? I'll skip both and stick with Diet Coke! Snork!

    Fun post, Beth!

  70. no tree opinions, but thought I'd mention how vastly entertained by a neighborhood family who wanted to go with something different that light-up reindeer on their lawn, and chose poloar bears instead. Only they look like capybaras - those giant guinea pig rodents from south america. my fave seasonal decoration in the neigborhood.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Snorking over the white, snowy capybaras, M! Too funny! My fav in our neighborhood is the dancing santa on one neighbor's front porch. It's got a sensor and the first day they put it up, I saw the postman go up on the porch, focused on the mail.

That thing started gyrating and singing and I thought he was going to fall off the porch. Poor man, I'm afraid I laughed a great deal at his expense! Heehee. (Still am, for that matter!)

    ReplyDelete
  72. What - no hockey? LOL Skating, naturally.

LOL - I should've added hockey since you and my son love it so. He's missing his rec league tonight because he has to work *g*

I like our LED lights, too. I especially like them since a string of old fashion lights went out on our crabapple tree and they're too high up to mess with *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh, just saw your comment about Jude. I'm not a huge fan either although I did like him in The Holiday but I absolutely loved Kate Winslet in it!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Real (tho I understand artificial)

Stephanie, I prefer a real tree but had to switch to artificial since my son and I both have allergies to all that fresh pine *g*

But that hasn't stopped us from doing one of the traditions that's been passed down from my family. Each year after we decorate the tree we all look at it and say, "You know, I think that's the nicest tree we've ever had." Even though it's the same artifical tree year after year ;-)

And I'm with you on the plastic saucers! Love those!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Margay, do you decorate your door? My husband's aunt lives in an apartment building and it seems as if everyone there decorates their door for the holidays *g*

    ReplyDelete
  76. Silvia, that's a great idea to hang stockings on bedposts! When my kids were little, we used to let them open their stockings in their rooms while we set up the camera so we could catch their reaction when they saw the present-loaded tree for the first time *g*

Now we just tell them to stand in the hall until we're ready ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks for playing along, Traveler! Did you make your tree skirt? Mine was one of my earlier sewing projects but luckily it turned out well *g*

    ReplyDelete
  78. Jo, after cutting wrapping paper today with scissors (and not doing such a hot job) I don't even want to know what the edges would look like if I tried to tear the paper. However, my youngest turned out to be wicked good with the scissors. But she had trouble with the sticky tags :-)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Eggnog? NO, THANK YOU!!

LOL, Louisa. I agree. The only person in our family who likes eggnog is my older daughter (she's had it at friends' houses - not spiked *g*)

If we ever get back to buying real trees, I'm going to make sure we can plant it after Christmas. I think that's such a terrific idea :-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Beth wrote: Each year after we decorate the tree we all look at it and say, "You know, I think that's the nicest tree we've ever had." Even though it's the same artifical tree year after year ;-)

But the ornaments are differently arranged every year!

  81. PJ wrote: Eggnog, preferably made by my new neighbor. It's OMG good!

We used to have a neighbor (who moved to Vermont, alas) who made fabulous egg nog--no mix from the store for him! That stuff was good. Even if you could feel your arteries clogging while you drank it.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Thanks for playing, Anna! Glad to have another ice skating fan among us *g*

Not too many people have picked skiing. My son loves to ski and snowboard but I had a terrible experience the one and only time I went skiing and just never went back. It does look like fun though :-)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hey, EllenToo!! I think if you've never sledded, a plastic one would be easier to steer *g* And skating is so much fun but only if you don't mind the cold :-)

I've actually been thinking of hitting our local rink a few times this winter for some exercise. As much as I love my treadmill, it would be nice to do something different!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Oh, Lime, your skating story has me shivering. As a kid and into my early teens I spent a lot of time at our ice rink and I've seen some close calls. Mostly what sticks in my mind is how the boys loved to skate circles around everyone and then spray them when they stopped :-)

    ReplyDelete
  85. Edible gingerbread houses, kids love it.

Hi, Pam! Our gingerbread houses are totally edible but no one ever eats them! Probably because I won't let them since I like to look it until at least after Christmas :-)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Jeanne, your comment about the postman reminded me that we have, somewhere in the depths of the closet, the dancing Santa that was my mom's. He doesn't have as sensor, but he's fun. We need to dig him out.

Sitting on the floor by me, awaiting fresh batteries, is the Star Wars ball droid the boy just kicked out of his room (too "little kid" for him now). It does have a sensor, and I plan to aim it at the door when I'm working so people don't bother me. Hah!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Red & Green (although our tree is starting to look like Steeler Gold & Black!)

Hey, Stacy! I'm watching the game right now. Or I was but wanted to pop on to see all the action here *g* Go Steelers!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  88. Christmas trees:

    1. artificial. Too afraid a Christmas Vacation rabid squirrel might sneak in on a real one :-)*

    2. colored lights? Without a doubt. All white are too sterile. I got a prelit tree last year and it is PERFECT! Every light positioned just right!

    3. Blinking or static? either

    4. Tree skirt. Definately. I've always wanted to have the time to do a counted cross stitch one.

    Decorations:

    5. Red and green or silver and blue? Depends on my mood. Silver and blue remind me more of winter than Christmas. BTW...ya'll DO realize that Santa HAS to wear green mittens..Has. To.

    6. Old fashioned lights or LED? I don't know about LED but old fashioned aren't broke so why fix it?

    7. Outside decorations - simple or the more the merrier? I'd LOVE to have a overhang of lights but the way my house is I have to step out onto my porch to turn them on and off....not fun in the cold. So a simple wreath will do.

    8. Gingerbread houses - edible or just for looks? Looks.....they take too much work to EAT

    Fun stuff:

    9. Sleds...runner or plastic? If I had the energy to do this, I'd go with traditional runner (Or use Demetrius' shield :-)

    10. Ice skating, skiing or sledding? Sitting....in my warm PJ's ....watching Christmas movies.

    11. Do you hang mistletoe? Sigh. No. The chocolate chip cookies haven't drawn out my Prince Charming so, no need for it

    12. Where do you hang your stockings? No where. Santa doesn't leave me stockings anymore

    The toughies:

If you had to choose (and lets pretend you DO have to choose *g*), which of these would you give up for the entire Holiday season:

Christmas music or Christmas movies? Movies. I need the music.

What if you were wrapping and could have either Scissors or scotch tape (and no, you don't have any gift bags available either *g*) which would you choose to keep? Tape cause like Suz, I can fold and tear paper.

If one of these was the ONLY beverage you could drink through the entire season, which would it be: eggnog or mulled wine? Wine....in the form of mulled Sangria :-)

    ReplyDelete
  89. From my slender thighs ;-)

ROFL! You crack me up, Anna!

I've never even attempted to make eggnog (and I never will *g*) but when I hear someone is making it, I'm reminded of that TV show Sisters. Did anyone else watch that? It had Sela Ward and Bruce Springsteen's ex-wife and two other actresses I can't think of right now...anyway, in one episode, they made eggnog from bad eggs and were all horribly sick.

So now I'm afraid to make it :-)

  95. M, capybaras for Christmas? Snort!

Actually I looked up a recipe for eggnog and it looks like liver failure mixed with a heart attack! This recipe had full cream milk, cream, a dozen eggs, bourbon AND brandy. And a ton of sugar as well, I think.

And the really horrible thing is I started to think maybe I should make some. Do you think I could substitute whisky for the bourbon? I'm not a bourbon drinker but there's sure some scotch in the house (purely for Santa's use!).

    ReplyDelete
  96. Bing actually preferred whiskey to bourbon in his eggnog....

  98. Static. Just FYI we have some Star Trek ships that plug into the light string and, in theory, then flash their running lights--except every time we try it, they short out the whole string. *sigh*

Oh, that's too bad, Nancy! That would be so cool to see them all lit up *g*

One of our favorite ornaments is one from my husband's grandmother. It looks like a little circus tent and has a fan inside and you hang it directly over a light bulb so the fan will twirl. We had several but are down to just the one now.

  99. tape. I can always rip the paper with my teeth.

LOL, Drew! I'm picturing this and it's cracking me up *g* Thanks for playing along with us!

  100. Beth, It is really nice to walk by a tree and know that it was my Christmas tree two years ago or five years ago. It's almost like having a pet tree! LOL The Leland cypress have grown the most, but the firs and the spruces are catching up. I realize that the lob lolly pines are the Southern tree, but I hate them. So when I plant a retired Christmas tree we eliminate the pines around it to give it room to grow. I hope one day to have five acres of nothing but retired Christmas trees and hardwoods and dogwoods on my property.

  101. Music - but I'm assuming we can still sing them rather than listen?

Of course! I would never want to stop anyone from singing *g*

Well...sometimes I ask my husband to stop but that's only when he tries to hit the really high notes ;-)

  102. Hey, Jess! I prefer static lights as well. All that blinking gives me a headache *g*

    ReplyDelete
  103. Beth, you need to brave the after-Christmas sales and nab a tree skirt.

I should, Caren, but then I think I should just make another one. Of course, it took me 10 years to make my older daughter's stocking (counted cross-stitch) and my younger one's is still in the package *g*

Maybe I could buy one that just looks like I made it. But it'd have to have uneven stitching :-)

  104. Joder, I think that's why we don't eat our gingerbread houses - by the time I'm ready to let the kids go at it, all the frosting is dry and the candy is stale *g*

    ReplyDelete
  105. Hi, Daz! I wish we had a staircase (I'm not counting the one that leads to the basement *g*) to hang stockings on. My husband's family always took a picture of them coming down the staircase Christmas morning and I always thought that was a great tradition :-)

  106. OMG...MORE the merrier...my husband can out do Chevy Chase!

LOL, Tammy! My neighbor (who also happens to be my sister *g*) is a more the merrier type too! So I get the best of both worlds - our simple white lights and right out the window, they're millions of colored ones :-)

  107. do have a nice (although fake) kissing ball; but fake just means it'll last forever ;)

Lois, you're so right! And who cares if it's fake or real? A kissing ball is a wonderful thing *g*

  108. Jeanne, hope you're enjoying that snow! Is it suppose to stick around so you'll have a white Christmas?

You and your love of winter sports would fit in well here with the husband and two of the kids *g* The other kid and I will stay inside where it's warm ;-)

  109. Pat, thanks for stopping by and playing with us! I love seeing everyone's answers *g*

  110. Susan, I'm all for snuggling on the sofa and watching White Christmas followed by It's A Wonderful Life and then Elf *g* Love them all!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hi, Jerrie! I talked my husband into hanging lights on the crabapple tree. I think I got away with it because it's not full grown yet *g*

  112. Thanks for answering the questions, Virginia! And it seems as if we have enough people to have one huge sledding party *g*

  113. Hi, Pissenlit! Thanks for playing *g*

Did anyone else have knit stockings? My mother knit all of our stockings (and for our spouses and all of her grandkids) and those things hold a ton of stuff. They stretch like you wouldn't believe. I have such a hard time shopping for stocking stuffers I'm glad my kids' stockings get full after only a few items :-)

  114. Only they look like capybaras - those giant guinea pig rodents from south america

ROFL, M!! And eww...those things creep me out. I'm shivering just thinking about them.

    But it does sound...festive ;-)

  115. But the ornaments are differently arranged every year!

LOL! True, Nancy. And this year, quite a few of them are facing the wrong way (thanks to my son.) A few years ago, he printed a picture of himself and taped it onto a paper body with wings. We all cracked up when we noticed the new 'angel' sitting on top of the tree ;-)

  116. I'd go with traditional runner (Or use Demetrius' shield :-)

Joan, I think you could make some money renting out this shield! Especially if Demetrius comes with it ;-)

  117. Hey, Lucy! Welcome to the lair *g*

I hear you about the snow but that's not a choice for me. We usually have the white stuff from late Oct until early April *sigh*

And It's A Wonderful Life is my very favorite movie! I watched it with my son last weekend *g*

    ReplyDelete
  118. Lady Graeye, what color is on your tree? Do you alternate each year? My mom does an all white tree upstairs and a multi-colored one in the basement. I'm just glad I can get one tree up and decorated *g*

  119. It's almost like having a pet tree!

LOL! That is so cool, Louisa! And I love your goal for your property *g* We plant a tree or two every year and I love seeing how well they do each year :-)

T2. Tape, although that's something I reserve the right to change my mind on should this occasion actually arise...

T3. Mulled wine, although I'd really prefer cider :)

Very fun, Beth! :) Now, back to addressing Christmas cards... ;)

    Congrats on the GR, Linda!

  121. Anna C., that sounds like a perfect egg nog recipe. It really shouldn't contain anything remotely good for you, except, arguably, egg.

You probably could substitute whiskey for bourbon. You could try it in one glass or so and see how it does. Around here, egg nog comes with brandy, I think, so if you have any of that on hand, it might do.

When I was in college, we had wassail once, and that was pretty terrific. Although lighting a match in the room was not recommended.

  122. Hiya Beth,
The stockings my aunt hung for us weren't knit but they were MASSIVE! :D

    ReplyDelete
  123. Musing further on egg nog--I wonder if the alcohol kills any germs in the raw eggs . . .

The dh bought some pasteurized egg nog at the store, and we have brandy that's open because the first batch of cringe-proof fruitcake is in the oven. So that might do, though it's not the same as home-made, which he says makes him nervous because of the whole raw egg thing.

  124. Awe, Beth - sounds like boys. We went more as kids - I had a friend, he could do a split on the ice... but not solid ground O_o
My accident was kinda sad too - the only time I fell all night... and was run over by someone who had his own skates so they were all sharp. :P It wasn't too bad, but I wasn't keen to go skating after that.

    ReplyDelete
  125. And the really horrible thing is I started to think maybe I should make some. Do you think I could substitute whisky for the bourbon? I'm not a bourbon drinker but there's sure some scotch in the house (purely for Santa's use!).

Anna, my neighbor who brought his made-from-scratch eggnog to the neighborhood Christmas party last week made it with scotch. It was fabulous!

  126. Oh, no, PJ, this delicious heart attack/liver failure potion is sounding more and more likely! JUST what I need, not! I must say it sounds absolutely yummy!

LOL, Fedora! I bet the white and blue is lovely *g*

And as someone who has wrapped many a present without tape let me just say, it can be done! Especially if you have cute stickers large enough to hold the flaps of paper together ;-)

ROFL, Nancy! Sounds like a festive time *g*

  130. The stockings my aunt hung for us weren't knit but they were MASSIVE! :D

Eek! I'd have nightmares trying to fill a massive stocking. Honestly. Or I suppose I could just stuff a dozen pair of socks in there and call it good :-)

  131. Lime, I don't blame you for not wanting to go back. Nothing nearly as horrible as your ice skating accident happened to me the time I went skiing and still you couldn't pay me to get back on the slopes.

Once burned twice shy and all that ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Thanks for playing, Catslady! Yes, the eggnog would keep us full and probably add a few pounds, wouldn't it? *g*

And I forgot all about using ribbon in place of tape. Great idea!
