On This Day in History

On this day 40 years ago, in a small town in Kentucky, I was born. No matter how many times I do the math, I can't believe I'm 40. I don't feel 40.

Curious about what else might have happened on all the May 29th dates in history, I did a little research and here's what I found:

In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Turks, who renamed it Istanbul.

In 1660, Charles II was restored to the English throne after 11 years of commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. It happened to be Charles' 30th birthday. (Interesting, since I just started watching the first season of The Tudors.)

In 1765, U.S. patriot Patrick Henry presented the Virginia Resolutions and said, "If this be treason, make the most of it." It was his 29th birthday.

In 1790, Rhode Island became the last of the original 13 colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

In 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state.

In 1903, Bob Hope was born.

In 1917, John F. Kennedy was born.

In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first mountain climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.

In 1958, Annette Bening was born in Topeka, Kansas.

In 1959, actor Adrian Paul (of TV's Highlander) was born.

Okay, everyone, play along. What historic things happened on your date of birth? With whom do you share a birthday?

And for everyone in the U.S., have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy those cookouts! I know I will.

  2. Hmm... I think the kids would enjoy hanging out with him--it's been awhile ;) He'd better get ready to shake those tail feathers!

As for my birthday, in 1803, the Louisiana Purchase is completed at a ceremony in New Orleans. In 1977, Djibouti and Vietnam join the UN. In 1996, NeXT merges with Apple Computer :) LOL! Who knew?

Are you doing anything special to celebrate this one, Trish?

  3. HAPPY BIG 4-0 Trish!

Don't worry, 40 is the new 30. ;-) And as any mechanic will tell you, it's not the years, it's the MILEAGE!

I happen to share a bday with Steven Spielberg and Brad Pitt. I'm slightly younger than Steve and slightly older than Brad... and a LOT POORER than both of them! :-P

  4. Happy birthday, Trish!!!

Lovely post :D And wow - Patrick Henry was only 29? Gah.
As for the Tudors- I like the show :X but am somewhat glad it's the last season. Love Henry Cavill though. I actually liked Jonathan Rhys Meyers less and less with each season/episode- so maybe he's doing a good job? :X Also couldn't stand the girl who played Anne B.

Anyway, yay! I hope you have a fantastic day and get to eat as much cake and ice cream as you want :)

    Congrats on the GR, Fedora!

  5. Trish, you are in good company!

This was a fun exercise in personal history.

Plus on my birthday in history:

1305 – William Wallace, Scottish patriot, is excuted for high treason by Edward I of England.

1775 – King George III declares that the American colonies exist in a state of open and avowed rebellion.

1839 – The United Kingdom captures Hong Kong as a base as it prepares for war with Qing China.

1990 – Saddam Hussein appears on Iraqi state television with a number of Western "guests" - I do remember this!

  6. Happy Birthday, Trish. I hope you get all you desire. Apparently I share a birthday with Nero, but we don't share the same traits. In 1903 the Wright brothers make their first attempt to launch the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk.

    Congrats, Fedora.

  10. Happy Birthday, Trish!! I have to say I've enjoyed being in my 40's so much more than my 30's!

We have a Bank Holiday these weekend too - not Memorial Day, but what was originally called Whit Weekend, to honour Whitsun. We have several of these public holidays over here. Including one in August.

I know I was born on the last bank holiday to be held at the beginning of August - it was moved to the end of the month after I was born.

    August 5th:

    Marilyn Monroe died in 1962

The nuclear test ban treaty was signed in 1963 - on the day I was born!

Mark McGwire hit his 500th home run in 1999

The tide began to turn on women's suffrage in 1920

    American Bandstand debuted in 1957

Lots of other fun stuff - I've enjoyed reseraching it!

    I share a birthday with:

    Neil Armstrong
    John Huston
    Elephant Man
    Joan Hickson
    Robert Taylor
    Loni Anderson
    Maureen McCormick
    Mark Mulder
    Carl Crawford
And - Herb Brooks (the man behind Miracle on Ice!)

Lots of famous people seem to have died on this date including Richard Burton and Alec Guinness

It's Independence Day in Burkina Faso and Thanksgiving in Croatia

  11. Happy birthday!!!!!!!!

The most memorable thing for me, a native Texan, is that Sam Houston's army defeated Santa Ana in the Battle of San Jacinto, thus ensuring Texas's independence. Because of that, we celebrate Fiesta in San Antonio every year, right around my birthday.

How cool that you share a birthday with JFK. I share mine with Iggy Pop and Tony Danza :-/

  12. Happy Birthday, Trish! My 40's were good, full of adventure and fun, but my 50's have been even better. Think of all you have to look forward to! :) Enjoy!

  15. Happy Birthday Trish!!!

Aunty's right though I'D heard that 50 was the new 30 so 40 must be the new 20 :-)

  16. Fedora, that's cool about the Louisiana purchase.

We're going out to dinner tonight, and tomorrow there's a big family cookout with the Milburn clan. Hubby took the day off yesterday and we had a fun day -- went out to eat lunch, went to see Iron Man 2, then to Steak & Shake for milkshakes. Last night, we watched Leap Year. I'd seen it in the theater, but he hadn't seen it before. I think it's a cute romantic comedy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Cindy, LOL about the mileage. And those are some pretty impressive folks with whom to share a birthday.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lime, yeah, can you imagine being such an important part of history at such a young age? Of course, then, maybe 29 was like 49 with how long people lived. :)

I'm only 4 episodes into season 1 of The Tudors. The person I'm most impressed with is Maria Doyle Kennedy, who plays Queen Katherine of Aragon.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Kim, impressive list, especially the William Wallace one. Man, that scene in Braveheart made me bawl like a baby.

And Rick Springfield, fun. I just saw some photos from another author who had her photo taken with him at BEA (Book Expo America). He was there signing his memoir. Now, see, that's something that could make me feel old if I let it -- Rick Springfield writing memoir.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jane, what, no desire to watch Rome burn? :)

Hey, I've been to Kitty Hawk. It's pretty out there. Really windy, but pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Barb, cool on being a twin. I've always wondered what that's like.

And how romantic about the Brownings.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Helen, I should probably know this, but why was Charlie Chaplin in self-imposed exile. I admit I know very little about him.

    And Casanova, eh? :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anna, who is Whitsun?

And what a great moment in history to be born with the signing of that treaty.

American Bandstand -- I remember watching that every Saturday as a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  24. MJ, and here I thought they had Fiesta just for your birthday? :) Seriously, that's a cool historic event to have on your birth date.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's because I TELL everyone Fiesta is just for my birthday :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. PJ, I love how all of you are telling me the best is yet to come. I certainly like how that sounds.

Sophia Loren and Alexander the Great -- those are impressive people you share a birthday with.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Joan, 40 is the new 20? Hmm, I must be back in college then. I hope I didn't miss my finals. :)

LOL, love all your little comments on the events. A crusaders hanging out in a hooka bar! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL, MJ. That must be where I heard it. ;)

  29. Happy birthday, Trish! 40 isn't so bad. I've enjoyed my 40s so far.

So here's what I found out about my birthday, March 21.

It is the first day of the astrological sign, Aries.

Johann Sebastian Bach was born 3/21/1685

Matthew Broderick was born the year before me on 3/21.

In 1413, Henry V became King of England.

1788 – A fire in New Orleans leaves most of the town in ruins.

1804 – Code Napoléon is adopted as French civil law.

1905 – Albert Einstein publishes his theory on special relativity.

1965 – Martin Luther King Jr. leads 3,200 people on the start of the third and finally successful civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

I hope you enjoy the Tudors, Trish! I really liked that series. Have a great birthday!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Christie, impressive list you have, especially the beginning of the Selma march. It's fun finding out these tidbits of history, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Happy Birthday Bandita Trish! You are still a sweet young thing in comparison to some of us. I am old enough to be your mother!

Some very cool things on your list. But, what the heck, a whale exploded? How does that happen?

  37. Happy Birthday Trish!

Great post! I share a birthday with Jay Leno, president John Monroe and also not one not so nice person, that I want mention.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Whitsun is a what, not a who *g*, Trish. It's a church celebration - also known as Pentecost, I think - where the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus' disciples. For us, it marks the beginning of summer.

  39. Fedora, congrats on the rooster!

Trish, Happy Birthday and safe journeys. :-)

May 29 seems to be a fairly remarkable day. You know I love the Restoration but I'd forgotten this was its official date.

Interesting about the Wright Flyer. I live in NC and have visited the Kitty Hawk site, and I didn't know this.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dianna--on the whale? What Joan said. :-/

You share Tom Selleck's birthday? Very cool. That man certainly has aged well.

I used to be a huge Magnum fanatic. People knew not to call me on Thursday at 8 'cause I'd be busy watching. I loved the humor in that show as much as the action.

In fact, my Thursdays were Magnum, P.I., Simon & Simon, and Hil Street Blues. Thursdays were no-phone nights. Now, of course, I could watch those shows and do email at the same time--easier multi-tasking than the phone.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Speaking of multi-tasking, I went upstairs a while ago, and the boy was simultaneously playing an online game and reading.

    I could never.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks, Gannon, Mo and Virginia.

Oops, Anna, I'm showing my ignorance, aren't I?

    Thanks, Nancy.

  45. Nancy, I wasn't a Magnum P.I. person, but I did see Simon & Simon.

  46. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TRISH!!! I hope your day is special. You look far too young for 40, Bandita!

Interesting... the best thing I know that happened on my birthday was that the Berlin Wall came down. I remember watching it on TV with tears streaming down my face. How awesome a birthday present was that?

    Congrats on the bird, Fedora!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Happy Birthday, Trish!! Hope it's wonderful! I'll add my assurance to you that the 40's are fabulous. Enjoy the time for all it's worth. :-)

Among others, I share my birthday with Venus Williams and Barry Manilow. It's uncanny, we three have so much in common!

Happy Memorial Day to all our stateside Banditas and friends!

  48. No, Trish - just showing that you're not a Brit! I think we'd guessed that *g*. The accent is kind of a give-away!

Nancy - was the boy texting too?

    Hahaha....Happy Birthday!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Happy Birthday Trish!
May your birthday wish come true.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Actually further to the Whitsun discussion, we have some VERY beautiful islands off the Queensland coast on the Great Barrier Reef that are the Whitsunday Islands. Apparently Captain Cook discovered them on Whitsun in 1770! A nice fact for Trish's birthday!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hey, Trish, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BANDITA!!! Actually 40 is a good time - you're old enough to know yourself and that makes a big difference! And you don't look a day over 26, me loov!

Ha ha! Well, my birthday (24th August) is a sequence of disasters! Pompeii got covered in lava. The French Catholics massacred the French Protestants in the 16th century. Oh, and I was born - what a terrible trio!

    Fedora, congrats on the chook!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sorry about the deleted comments, guys - blogger decided I was Jo, which is rather flattering!

  56. Mitzi, that's a WAAAAYYYYYY cool anniversary to have on your birthday!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yeah, the article said no one was injured but it took hours to clean up the mess.

The whale had beached itself and died, they were taking it for an autopsy of sorts, where it had begun to decay inside it produced gases and well, it blew up. Are you listening Bang, bang Banditas, it blew up!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh, no, Dianna, don't blame the boom girls! I was thinking what a panorama of experience this anniversary is offering us - bravery, love, disaster, glamour, not to mention an exploding whale!

    ReplyDelete
  59. What a neat idea for a blog! Happy Birthday Trish!! Hey, 40 is the new 30 so you are just hitting your prime! I just keep celebrating the anniversary of my 29th birthday so I never actually turned 40. On the 11th anniversary of my 29th, however, my darling brothers sent a funeral wreath to my office. I was NOT amused!

And Wow Christine, sharing a birthday with the fall of the Wall is COOL!! My German professor was in Berlin when the wall came down. He called me so that I could hear the whole thing. Even now I can see him in my mind's eye standing there with his phone in the air and every now and then bringing it down to say "Horst du? Horst du?"

Now on my birthday, December 29th here is a little of what happened.
