On this day 40 years ago, in a small town in Kentucky, I was born. No matter how many times I do the math, I can't believe I'm 40. I don't feel 40.
Curious about what else might have happened on all the May 29th dates in history, I did a little research and here's what I found:
In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Turks, who renamed it Istanbul.
In 1660, Charles II was restored to the English throne after 11 years of commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. It happened to be Charles' 30th birthday. (Interesting, since I just started watching the first season of The Tudors.)
In 1765, U.S. patriot Patrick Henry presented the Virginia Resolutions and said, "If this be treason, make the most of it." It was his 29th birthday.
In 1790, Rhode Island became the last of the original 13 colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
In 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state.
In 1903, Bob Hope was born.
In 1917, John F. Kennedy was born.
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first mountain climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
In 1958, Annette Bening was born in Topeka, Kansas.
In 1959, actor Adrian Paul (of TV's Highlander) was born.

As for the Tudors- I like the show :X but am somewhat glad it's the last season. Love Henry Cavill though. I actually liked Jonathan Rhys Meyers less and less with each season/episode- so maybe he's doing a good job? :X Also couldn't stand the girl who played Anne B.
Anyway, yay! I hope you have a fantastic day and get to eat as much cake and ice cream as you want :)

ReplyDeleteWe have a Bank Holiday these weekend too - not Memorial Day, but what was originally called Whit Weekend, to honour Whitsun. We have several of these public holidays over here. Including one in August.
I know I was born on the last bank holiday to be held at the beginning of August - it was moved to the end of the month after I was born.

ReplyDeleteThe most memorable thing for me, a native Texan, is that Sam Houston's army defeated Santa Ana in the Battle of San Jacinto, thus ensuring Texas's independence. Because of that, we celebrate Fiesta in San Antonio every year, right around my birthday.

ReplyDeleteWe're going out to dinner tonight, and tomorrow there's a big family cookout with the Milburn clan. Hubby took the day off yesterday and we had a fun day -- went out to eat lunch, went to see Iron Man 2, then to Steak & Shake for milkshakes. Last night, we watched Leap Year. I'd seen it in the theater, but he hadn't seen it before. I think it's a cute romantic comedy.

Whitsun is a what, not a who *g*, Trish. It's a church celebration - also known as Pentecost, I think - where the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus' disciples. For us, it marks the beginning of summer.

I used to be a huge Magnum fanatic. People knew not to call me on Thursday at 8 'cause I'd be busy watching. I loved the humor in that show as much as the action.
In fact, my Thursdays were Magnum, P.I., Simon & Simon, and Hil Street Blues. Thursdays were no-phone nights. Now, of course, I could watch those shows and do email at the same time--easier multi-tasking than the phone.
Speaking of multi-tasking, I went upstairs a while ago, and the boy was simultaneously playing an online game and reading.

Actually further to the Whitsun discussion, we have some VERY beautiful islands off the Queensland coast on the Great Barrier Reef that are the Whitsunday Islands. Apparently Captain Cook discovered them on Whitsun in 1770! A nice fact for Trish's birthday!
