Quick Top Ten - Animation

by Anna Sugden

Christine's post about animated films and a recent trip to the cinema where they previewed Rio and Tangled got me thinking!

I'm a big fan of Disney movies. The Aristocats, Lady & the Tramp, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid etc etc etc Actually, I'm a fan of animation/cartoons - LOVE Studio Ghibli too. If you've never seen Howl's Moving Castle, you must!

I also really enjoy animation by legends such as Nick Park/Aardman - Wallace and Gromit - and Pixar (Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, etc) and Dreamworks (Shrek etc). And, of course, Pingu.

I adore Tove Janssen's Moomins though I never saw any of the animated ones.

I enjoyed all those Saturday morning cartoons (or, in my childhood, early afternoon cartoons) like Wacky Races, Scooby Doo and others like Camberwick Green and Mary, Mungo and Midge. Then, of course there are the classics like Tom & Jerry, Bugs and pals, Road Runner and Sylvester and Tweety. I also liked the super heroes - Batman et al.

Can't resist the old puppet programs too like Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90. When I was a kid there were also animated shorts just before the news like Magic Roundabout and HR Puffenstuff.

I haven't got into shows like The Simpsons or South Park or King of the Hill or any of those more adult humour cartoons - most aren't really my kind of humour, though the odd episode can crack me up.

So, here's your Quick Top 10 question - name your Top 10 animation movies, cartoons or shows.

Mine are:

Lady and the Tramp
The Aristocats
Howl's Moving Castle
Happy Feet
Wallace & Gromit
Aardman's Creature Comforts (including the TV ads)
Finding Nemo
Sleeping Beauty
Cinderella
Spirited Away

With a special honorary place for Pingu!

  16. Margay, how could I forget 101 Dalmations? I had the Little Golden Book adaptation, and my grandfather and I read it over and over. It was one of the first movies I bought to watch with the boy.

At the point where Jasper and Horace come to the door to steal the puppies, they knock, and Nanny bustles to the door. The boy cried, "No, nanny! Don't let 'em in! They're bad'uns."

    And indeed they were.

  18. Anna -

Funny you should post this. I was just commenting to my husband the other day that I just can't get into the animated TV shows and haven't any interest anymore in paying to see animated films in the theaters. When the kids were little - no problem- I really enjoyed them. But now - not so much.

However, that said - there's some great animated films out there. My list:

    Fantasia
    Enchanted (partly animated)
    Lady and the Tramp
    Bambi
    Finding Nemo
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (loved the characterization of the Dwarfs)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahh Sheree - how interesting to see an anime fan here too. My hubby loves them - from Tokyo Godfathers to Steamboy.

Actually, I know there are a few others, but usually I'm one of the few who have a soft spot for the Studio Ghibli stuff and Miyazaki in particular.

I got some for Christmas so will enjoy watching them.

  27. I love Fantasia too, Anna. Educational and fun.

There's also a fabulous short called Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land which is also fun.

  30. I've never seen Lilo and Stitch, Gillina. Though I have seen the toys around. Will have to check them out.

One of the reasons I'd love to read Japanese is I'd love to get hold of the Manga romances they have.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The Jungle Book is such a fun sing-a-long, isn't it Dianna?!

Sounds like we have very similar tastes!

    ReplyDelete
  32. OMG Joanie - I LOVE The Jetsons! How could I forget them?! They were so cool in their little futuristic world.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You're right, Suz - Robin Williams was pure genius as the genie *g* in Aladdin.

Sorry about the Spider Pig thing - I don't understand that as I've never heard it (or perhaps I shouldn't have admitted that!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tawny, Beauty and the Beat is the name of an album by the Go-Go's in the 1980's. Not punk rock but really fun.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh yes, Margay - 101 Dalmations! I liked the live action film too. Glenn Close over-acting was so worth it!

I never saw Pocahantas. I don't know why, but I thought her story was sad and so didn't want a sad animation. Perhaps I'm wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've never seen Animaniacs, Nancy - will have to check them/it out!

Somehow, I knew you'd have a special superheroes series in your top ten!

    ReplyDelete

Hey, you're in good company. Disney - who work in partnership with Studio Ghibli - pretty much own me too!

    ReplyDelete

  51. Love your top 10 posts, Anna. Sorry I'm late to the party, been gone all day.

Hmmm, I do enjoy Disney animated shows, but my all-time, absolute fave is BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Love what they did with the story. For the musical part, I really like LITTLE MERMAID, and for overall pow! factor, it's THE LION KING.

Actually, I love them all, and for Pixar my favorite is Toy Story. There's something so timeless about the themes in that story.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was never a Captain Scarlet fan either Pissenlit - although I knew the theme song *g*.

I'm writing down all these animations I've never heard of ... Quest for Camelot.

    ReplyDelete
  53. On no! Not you too, Danielle!

You make up for it with your love of animation though *g*. I must admit that Tangled is next on my list and Hubby seems quite keen to see it too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh yes, Trish! I love The Little Mermaid too *sigh*. See, it can't just be a top ten, can it?!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hmm - I forgot about Hercules - that was great too. Never seen Phineas and Ferb - though I did see Spongebob once with my niece and nephew.

I can see you liking Bugs, Beth - he's your sense of humour!

    ReplyDelete
  56. They make me smile too, Louisa!

Chicken Run! That was so funny!

My cats aren't too fussed by TV - though they do seem to prefer hockey and football (no laughing, Banditas!) - I think it's the movement of the ball/puck.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi Fedora! Yay that you're another Miyazaki fan!

    ReplyDelete
  58. No worries, Jo - I was gone all day too - though I guess my day is several hours ahead of you *g*.

I think the themes in all the Disney movies are timeless. But, you're right - Lion King is especially powerful with the Circle of Life.

I know a lot of people knock them, but I like the feel-good factor in them.

    Les Triplettes de Belleville
    Up

    Ratatouille
    Nu, pogodi!
