Even Better With Age

by Beth

It's true that some things--such as wine and cheese--get better with age. And while I enjoy both, and I'm sure they'd make an interesting blog topic, today I'd like to discuss something a bit...prettier. (Or at least, more fun to look at *g*)

My top five picks for men who have gotten better with age!

1. Hugh Jackman. I think most of us could agree that the years have been kind to Hugh *g*

2. Liam Neeson. I fell hard for Liam in Love Actually.

3. George Clooney. I never watched ER but I do remember George from his days on The Facts of Life. Yes, he has definitely improved with age :-)

4. Patrick Dempsey. The same goes for Patrick who I first saw as a nerdy teen in Can't Buy Me Love.

5. Sting. I recently saw footage of Sting in concert and he still kicks butt up on that stage! I also love that he's into yoga *g*

Who are your picks for men who have gotten better with age?

We have an AHA Go Red pin for one commenter today. I'm also giving a copy of Tawny's latest Red Hot Blaze, BREAKING THE RULES!

The healthy heart tip for February 20 is: Try something new - dare yourself to try a new fruit or vegetable. Next time you're at the store, pick up something you've never made before. Many grocery stores have free recipe cards in the produce section or just type the food into your favorite search engine.

Romance Writers of America and the American Heart Association have partnered to raise awareness of heart disease in women and encourage you to join us in wearing red on February 4, National Wear Red Day. Visit Go Red for Women to learn how to fight heart disease.

And just in case you missed it...

Sign up for the Go Red Better U Program and receive two free romance e-books.

Wonderful post. I consider that Richard Armitage pass to this list. :)

Oh I agree, Beth! Actors like Jeff Bridges, Tom Berenger, Mark Harmon, Jimmy Smits, Kurt Russell and even Clint ... they've aged rather nicely.

My favourite is an English actor called Martin Shaw. He came to fame in a show called The Professionals and I wasn't too fussed about him. But in recent years, he's been in a number of series and ... YUM! And he's got the cutest twinkle in his eyes.

The other one is Leigh Lawson (who's married to Twiggy).

The worst has to be Val Kilmer! OMG!

David McCallum (Ducky on NCIS) - OMG - he was born in Sept/33, making him 77 right now - I think he is MUCH better looking than "back in the day" when starring in Man from U.N.C.L.E.!

Pierce Brosnan (born May/53) - although not bad looking when in Remington Steele, I think he's "hunkier" now than when voted Sexiest Man Alive in 2001.

Back to NCIS and Mark Harmon this time - like Anna suggested - was born Sept/51 - I think is sexier than when he was voted Sexiest Man in 1986!

Matt Damon - born Oct/70 - was also Sexiest Man Alive in 2007 - and I think he could continue to get sexier through the years.

Ben Affleck - born Aug/72 - also voted Sexiest Man Alive in 2002 - also might be still improving.

Thanks for the hubba-hubba topic today!

Lovely way to start the day, Beth!

I agree with your choices. Also, Mark Harmon, Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan. They've all aged very nicely.

Of course, my favorite is Hugh Jackman. I was channel surfing last night and landed on "Kate and Leopold." Admittedly, he was lovely to look at in that movie but much more so now (in my totally unbiased opinion). ;-)
All that lovely maturity sits on his shoulders very well indeed!

Congrats on nabbing the GR, Jonia's cut! Is this his first time with you?

LilMissMolly said...

I totally agree with Cute Jackman! The other that I think that has "seasoned" very well is Harrison Ford.

Louisa Cornell said...

Nice job, Jonia's cut! The GR never ages. SNORK (Or so he says!) Do they have hair dye for roosters?

What a great topic for a Sunday morning, Beth!

I have to agree that Richard Armitage is gorgeous at any age!

Another man who has aged well is Gerard Butler. He was 'striking' in Dracula 2000, but by the time he got to 300 OMG !! And even in Law-Abiding Citizen he just seems to get better every year. (My youngest nephew and I LOVE that movie, but I'm certain his reasons for loving it and mine are completely different! Everyone laughed at Christmas this year because he and I bought the same gift for each other - the DVD!)

And David McCallum! I had SUCH a crush on him when I was a child (Snork) and watched The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And now in NCIS he is STILL a handsome devil!

Of course Hugh Jackman gets better looking and sexier every year.

Okay, I have to admit that sometimes, I don't know who is who on TV or movies, I don't watch the credits so I don't have a clue. I do know who Mark Harmon is and I agree wholeheartedly that he got even better with age. I liked him then I love him now. Here is the kicker to my story...Duckie on NCIS? Every time I see the show I think d*** that is an attactive man but I didn't know what it was, just something about his eyes, face, expression, something that attracted me. If I had known he was David McCallum the question would have been answered immediately! I crushed on him from the days of U.N.C.L.E. too. 77 years old I think he wins the aging game at this point.

jo robertson said...

Great post, Beth! And great choices. Yours too, Anna S. and Jonia.

What I like best about these men is that they've aged well physically and look better than ever, but they've also grown in their performances. They're better actors and performers than when they were callow youth!

June M. said...

Love Hugh Jackman! Definately add Anthony Michael Hall--total geek in WIERD SCIENCE but then grew up and was a hottie in the series THE DEAD ZONE.

Unknown said...

Wow...My top men have been stated!!!
I totally LOVE Mark Harmon!!! Gerald Butler just gets better so he's one to watch as he ages more...LOL
And one can never go wrong with All around good guy Hugh Jackman!!!

How's my GR behaving?????...LOL

Beth Andrews said...

Happy Sunday!

Hey, Jonia's cut, I know a few Banditas are definitely going to agree with your choice *g* And congrats on nabbing the Golden Rooster! He's another male who only improves with age :-)

Beth Andrews said...

Hey, Anna! I agree with your choices, especially Mark Harmon. He's really come into his own on NCIS and does a great job portraying the tough, tortured Gibbs *g*

I'm not familiar with Martin Shaw or Leigh Lawson. Will have to check them out ;-)

Beth Andrews said...

Hi, Laney! Ducky is great! I hadn't realized he's the same age as my parents - thanks for the info *g*

I agree that both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will continue to get better with age. Great choices!

And I, too, think Pierce is even better now *g*

Beth Andrews said...

All that lovely maturity sits on his shoulders very well indeed

So well said, PJ! And I never even saw Sean Connery in a movie until well after his James Bond days so I've always preferred the more mature version :-)

Anna Campbell said...

Wow, Jonia, is this your first visit with the chook? Congrats!

Beth, what fun! I always like to look at pretty men first thing in the morning! Ha ha, that makes me sound considerably saucier than I am!

Nice selection. Jonia, I'm SOOO with you with Richard Armitage. He's coming into his own more with every year.

Anna, I've seen Leigh Lawson a couple of times on stage. He's a very handsome man.

Actually sometimes I think overly pretty men look better when they've got a few bumps and scratches from life. I always thought Paul Newman aged beautifully. Mark Harmon is definitely ageing nicely too. And I agree with you about Martin Shaw!

I think Jeremy Irons is ageing beautifully too. I think he's such an attractive man. And what a lovely voice!

Sometimes it goes the opposite way. Jeremy Irons makes me think of Anthony Andrews who I had a huge crush on in Brideshead Revisited and the Scarlet Pimpernel. He was almost too beautiful to be real. He really hasn't aged well at all.

Ha ha, I seem to have a preference for English men! Perhaps it's that lovely accent!

Helen said...

Well done Jonia have fun with him

Beth

This is such a lovely way to wake up on a Monday morning here in Oz a picture of Hugh Jackman thank you, and I have to agree with your choices I am with Dianna and don't watch much TV or many movies so often don't know a lot of the people that everyone is talking about.

I totally agree with the people that have been added to the list and I would add Rod Stewart as well for me he does get better with age

Have Fun
Helen

Loucinda McGary aka Aunty Cindy said...

GREAT POST, Beth!
And BIG THANX for such lovely eye candy. :-)

I can't disagree with anyone's choices so far. I remember David McCallum from UNCLE too. My sister and I giggled over him while my father called him "Onion head" because of his hair cut.

About the only current actor I can think of who hasn't already been named is Richard Gere. I actually wasn't too sold on his looks when he was younger, but now that he's 'mature' I find him much more attractive.

Most rockers haven't seemed to age very well (must be the sex, drugs and um, rock&roll), but Sting still looks D*MN good!

I thought Paul Newman was cute and sexy right up into his 80s. Robert Redford, however, is that Whole 'Nother Story. (winces)

Caren Crane said...

Jonia, congrats on snagging the Golden Rooster! I'm not sure he's better with age, though. He's getting saucier every year! *g* Totally agree with you on Richard Armitage. *swoon*

Caren Crane said...

I'm so psyched that I get to be the first to say ALAN RICKMAN! Usually someone gloms onto him before me. *g* He gets better every year. Despite the horrible Snape hair, he is really aging in a lovely way.

Anna S. already snagged my main man, Kurt Russell. I love Kurt and he is better with each passing decade.

I'll also put in a plug for Robert Downey, Jr. Getting better all the time and I LOVED his Sherlock Holmes!

Nancy said...

Jonia, congrats on taking home the Golden Rooster!

Landra said...

Congrats on the GR Jonia's cut! Great job... take care of that wascally fella.

Beth, what a great topic. So I am going to pick the ultimate two guys that get better with age..lol (these first two are not even alive but it doesn't matter you watch their movies and swoon).
Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner.

Follow that up with
Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, and Rob Lowe. Even John Cusack has aged well. He looked great in Identity and America's Sweethearts.

Nancy said...

Beth, I think Sean Connery just gets better and better. His films over the last decade are more nuanced than the early James Bonds.

I don't know that I'd say Tom Selleck has gotten better because he never disappointed, but he seems to roll right along doing well in a variety of roles.

Daniel Craig is much better as James Bond than he was in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Clive Owen's King Arthur has many more layers than his debut role as a sort of con man in a TV series whose name escapes me.

catslady said...

I agree with all your picks. I would add Mark Harmon as someone who has aged wonderfully!

Beth Andrews said...

Molly, I've been crushing on Harrison Ford ever since I saw Raiders Of The Lost Ark (which I saw before Star Wars *g*) He has such a great smile!

Beth Andrews said...

Louisa, I'll have to rent a few Gerard Butler movies. The only movie I've seen him in (at least, that I can recall) is Dear Frankie and I loved him in that.

Too funny about you and your nephew getting each other the same gift!

Beth Andrews said...

77 years old I think he wins the aging game at this point

LOL! I think you're right, Dianna!

Now I have to check out The Man From U.N.C.L.E. *g*

Beth Andrews said...

They're better actors and performers than when they were callow youth!

I think this has so much to do with it, Jo. Also, they just come across as comfortable and confident with who they are the choices they've made *g*

Beth Andrews said...

Definately add Anthony Michael Hall

June, I've never seen The Dead Zone but I loved me some Anthony Michael Hall as a teen *g*

And since you've brought up an 80s star, how about we add Robert Downey Jr to our ever-growing list? So handsome!!

Beth Andrews said...

And one can never go wrong with All around good guy Hugh Jackman!!!

You're so right, BJ! His being such a good guy is a big part of his appeal. Well, that and his face. And body *g*

Christine Wells said...

Hi Beth! Fun topic:) I think John Travolta has improved with age. He was all teeth and hair oil in his earlier years. He seems a lot harder-edged now. Not sure that i find him attractive but he's certainly compelling!

Jonia, oh, yeah, Richard Armitage is still pretty young but he's just going to get better and better, I think!

Laurie Logan said...

Richard Gere definitely! And Tom Selleck, although always has been attractive, has gotten more craggy with age - love him in Blue Bloods.

I agree with you all on quite of few of the others especially Hugh Jackman and Sting.

Fun Sunday post!

Donna MacMeans said...

Somehow it just doesn't seem fair that the man get to improve so with age. They just get a competence about their face that's really sexy.

We saw Liam Neelson in Unknown last night. Identity or not - I'd claim him (grin).

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Hey, Jonia's Cut! You got the Golden Rooster! :> Grins.

and welcome, I don't think I've seen your moniker on the blog on my days. :>

Nancy said...

Louisa and Dianna, I adore David McCallum.

You know, old UNCLE episodes are available on DVD, and there are even some fan sites on the net.

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Someone already mentioned Richard Gere whom I didn't care all that much for when he was younger, but now? Mrrrrrow!!!

I agree with Nancy's mention of Sean Connery. He's just scrumptious at any age. Probably that accent has something to do with it....

And oh, VA, I am SO there with you abot Val Kilmer. Yikes! You can put Cary Elwes in that "what the heck happened?" list.

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Gannon Carr said...

Wonderful choice, Beth, especially my Hugh! I love him! And he gets more gorgeous every year. I think one of the things that makes him incredibly sexy is that he is a devoted husband and father. *sigh*

I have to add Pierce Brosnan, Sean Connery, Gerard Butler, and Harrison Ford. :-)

I need my Alan Rickman people to weigh in here. Alan Rickman. Hit the Google images and tell me what you think. I'll wait...

Caren Crane said...

If you want to see Richard Gere in a wonderful, tear-jerker of a family film, rent 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale'. Best. Movie. Ever! It's a small, quiet film that will break your heart AND make you want an Akita. A Japanese one, though, not an American. *g*

Laney4 said...

Jeanne said, "Keep your hands, mind and eyes off my GIBBS!! Grins. :>"

Forgive me if I'm wrong here (I'm NOT, though!), Jeanne, but Anna Sugden and I mentioned Mark Harmon LONG BEFORE you came along! YOUR Gibbs? Hardly!

And while we're claiming possession here, Ducky is all mine. Mine mine mine, ya hear???

This post is such a riot. Thanks for all the smiles, ladies (and "gents")! (I have no idea why there is extra spacing above, but I can't get rid of it.)

RFTC Blog said...

I totally agree. All of those men seem to keep getting better looking. I also like Mark Wahlberg and Ryan Reynolds. I have been in "love" with him since he was a child acting on the Nickelodeon. He just seems to be getting more sexy as every year passes.

Louisa Cornell said...

Oh Caren! I need to get that movie for my Mom! When I was an undergrad she and Dad adopted a rescued 9 month old Akita not realizing exactly how BIG he was going to get! His owners dumped him because he had epilepsy. Shogun was a member of our family for over 12 years. He was one of the BEST dogs ever. He adored my parents and my Mom was the only one who get near him when he was having a seizure. There are photos somewhere of this little 4'11 woman walking her 180 pound 'Shoggie.' He really was incredible. Gotta go find that movie for her.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

mmmmmmmmmm, Beth,(yeah, I posted earlier to the wrong person...can I blame it on the Nyquil?) I like your list! In fact, can't find any I'd disagree with.

Now here's a few I'd add:

1. Matt Damon, especially when he's playing Jason Bourne!

2. Mark Whalberg. He's sexier now than when he was Marky Mark!

3. Donnie Wahlberg. Yep, those brothers age well.

4. Mark Harmon. Sigh...never miss an episode of NCIS as long as he'd on it!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

And Jeanne...I don't consider sharing Gibbs with you or Dianna! I have some serious research to do with the man!

Beth Andrews said...

I think Jeremy Irons is ageing beautifully too. I think he's such an attractive man. And what a lovely voice!

Great choice, Fo! I saw Jeremy on a recent episode of Law & Order SVU and I totally agree with you *g*

Beth Andrews said...

I totally agree with the people that have been added to the list and I would add Rod Stewart as well for me he does get better with age

LOL, Helen! Why am I not surprised by your choice? *g*

You know, this reminded me of seeing Mick Jagger perform at the Grammys last week and honestly, I thought he looked pretty good. Better than the last few times I'd seen him :-)

Beth Andrews said...

I thought Paul Newman was cute and sexy right up into his 80s

Hey, AC! I agree with this *g* Paul seemed to get less 'pretty' but sexier *g*

Beth Andrews said...

Despite the horrible Snape hair, he is really aging in a lovely way.

Oh, great pick, Caren! I agree with your assessment *g*

LOL on RDJ! I hadn't even read your post when I mentioned him. Great minds and all that, right? :-)

Beth Andrews said...

Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner.

So true, Slush! And it's funny you brought up Bruce Willis. We watched RED last night and loved it (and him *g*) I think he looked even better than he did in the first Die Hard :-)

And I love John Cusak!

Beth Andrews said...

I don't know that I'd say Tom Selleck has gotten better because he never disappointed, but he seems to roll right along doing well in a variety of roles.

This is a great point, Nancy! I didn't watch Magnum PI until it was out in reruns but I loved it. And I thought Tom was wonderful on Friends and I hear his new show is pretty good too.

I'm anxious to see Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford's new movie. Looks like some serious fun!

Tawny said...

Mmmm, I adore the way Johnny Depp has matured, both in looks and from a wild bad boy to the responsible dad he is now. He's gorgeous, funny and sweet.

And George is definitely on my list of nicely maturing hotties LOL. We just watched Oh Brother Where Art Thou again. I love that guy!!

Kate Carlisle said...

Great post, Beth! I think you named my top five! Oh, and Tawny just mentioned number six, Johnny Depp. Has he aged one day in the past ten years? I don't think so!

Oh, Daniel Craig. Mmm, yes. :-)

I have to add that my DH seems to be aging quite nicely. Especially given that he lives with me. That could give anyone wrinkles and gray hair. LOL

All the guys mentioned have aged well!

Loucinda McGary aka Aunty Cindy said...

(Aunty waves hand frantically) HERE! HERE! HERE! Posh!
I ADORE Alan Rickman! Can't believe I was having such brain fade this morning that I forgot to mention him. (sighs dreamily)I'll never forget seeing him on a talk show and he was asked how he got the part in the first Die Hard. He said (in that incredible voice), "I had a real English accent and I worked cheap."

Remember when he played the Sheriff of Nottingham to Kevin C's Robin Hood?!?! He was by faaar the best thing in that movie. ;-) And speaking of those who have NOT aged well... I'd put Costner in that category. :-P

AC
who is also a BIG fan of RDJ too.

Beth Andrews said...

I would add Mark Harmon as someone who has aged wonderfully!

He's a Lair favorite, Catslady! And for good reason :-)

Beth Andrews said...

I think John Travolta has improved with age.

I agree, Christine. But maybe that's because I never got into Saturday Night Fever *g*

Beth Andrews said...

And Tom Selleck, although always has been attractive, has gotten more craggy with age

Yes! Craggy. That's it, Laurie *g* The same with Liam Neeson. There's just something sexy about craggy. At least on certain men :-)

Beth Andrews said...

Somehow it just doesn't seem fair that the man get to improve so with age.

LOL! So true, Donna. Although Helen Mirren was in RED also and she looks dang good *g* And it was fun watching her shoot those big guns!

Beth Andrews said...

You can put Cary Elwes in that "what the heck happened?" list.

I admit that I still see him as he was in The Princess Bride (complete with that floppy hair!) whenever I see him *g* Which made it hard to root for him to be defeated when he played the evil uncle in Ella Enchanted :-)

Beth Andrews said...

I think one of the things that makes him incredibly sexy is that he is a devoted husband and father. *sigh*

Definitely, Gannon! He's true romance hero material :-)

We just watched Oh Brother Where Art Thou again. I love that guy!!

LOL! That's such a great movie. I'll have to watch it again. I'm always impressed with how he, like your Johnny, can do both comedy and drama so well.

Actually, now that I think about it, most of the guys on this list have that ability. Hmm...wonder if that has anything to do with how much we adore them?

Beth Andrews said...

I have to add that my DH seems to be aging quite nicely. Especially given that he lives with me. That could give anyone wrinkles and gray hair.
