Addictions

by Christie Kelley

Well it seems this blog is putting virtual pounds on me with all the food talk lately. So I thought I'd break it up by talking about addictions...hmm, I have a bad feeling this may lead to more food talk. I'm not talking about bad addictions but ones that make you feel good.

I guess I'll have to 'fess up. When I read Trish's post about not liking coffee or tea, my mouth gaped. You may have read that I brought my coffeemaker with me to my sister-in-law's house over Thanksgiving. I will admit, I'm addicted to coffee.

And Starbucks. Ahh, Starbucks.

There is just nothing better then when the gingerbread lattes come back to the stores. I wish Starbucks would have gingerbread flavoring all year long. A hint of nutmeg, some ginger and coffee. It's the best.

When it gets warm outside there's the carmel frappuccino. A delicious blend of coffee, carmel and ice. Mmmm, perhaps it's time to move on to another addiction that doesn't make me want to make a Starbucks run.

So the other addiction started as a child with me. Reading. I couldn't get enough books as a child. I was so lucky that I had three libraries within walking distance of my house. I came from a family of readers. My mom and dad both read, my brothers and sisters read too.

Then as a teenager, I discovered romance books. Yep, I'm addicted. There is nothing like pulling out a romance and curling up in a chair for a few hours to escape the stress of the day. Before I started writing, I probably read 2-3 books a week. Now, I'm ashamed to admit that I'm lucky if I get that much reading done in a month. But when I read, I still reach for a romance over any other genre. I force myself to read the literary selections of my neighborhood bookclub. I know it's good for me to read outside of romance but honestly, I'm tired of emotionally draining books with unhappy ending. I want the happy ending!

Onward to the last addiction I will admit to on a public blog. But I have to warn you, I'm back to food.

Chocolate.

Good chocolate, not cheap stuff you can get anywhere. I want Godiva...preferably truffles. Just biting into the creamy dark chocolate and soft filling is a fantasy for your tastebuds. I'm hoping Santa will drop some off under my Christmas tree this year.

So now it's time for confession. I want to know all about your legal addictions. Nothing illegal or morally questionable. What food is your addiction/comfort? What is the one thing you must have when shopping in the mall? Come on, we all have them.

In addition to one of the 12 Days presents, I'm giving away a signed copy of Every Night I'm Yours to one lucky commentor!

Ooh, Mariska! You and the GR are quite an item this week! :) Might there anything addictive going on there? ;)

Christie, my legal addictions are books and candy. Mainly chocolate, but also the gummy stuff. I don't have to have it while shopping, but I do have a stash at home, just about always :)

And really, being addicted to books is SO not a bad thing! ;)

Donna MacMeans said...

Yes. I think Mariska is addicted to the rosster!

I'm not addicted to coffee, but I am to caffeine. I prefer mine straight from the can as Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper. I know that drinking as many soft drinks as I do in a day is bad for you - but it's bad for everyone else if I don't get my fix! (grin) I'm trying to drink more iced tea, but it's so much easier to grab a can from the fridge.

I think I'm addicted to suduku - it's hard to pass up those puzzles without filling out the pattern. And I'm certainly addicted to books. At one time I was addicted to reading them - but lately I think I'm just addicted to collecting them - the piles are staggering!

I'm addicted to email. Lately, I've had troubles with my email program and it makes me crazy to lose that contact with friends and family.

And I'm addicted to anything sweet...chocolate, cookies, pastries, PJ's turtles ...I have a decided sweet tooth.

I suppose there are worse vices...

Christie, My addictions will be BOOKS, chocolate and brownies :) and of course, Chocolate Milk. Yum.

some chocolate names that i love, Cadbury, Dove, and Ferrero. They are so Good !

I'm addicted to junk food like chips(Doritos, Cheetos), Coke and candy(Whoppers, Spree, Maltesers, Toblerone, Swedish Fish, Kit Kat.) I'm also addicted to books and comedies like "Old School," "The 40 Year Old Virgin," "Porky's" and "The Hangover." I always have to stop at Sephora whenever I'm out shopping. I love shopping for makeup and makeup accessories like brushes.

Helen said...

Congrats again Mariska and have fun on your holiday.

Christie I too am hopelessly addicted to reading and as Donna says buying books now if only I could find the time to read them that would be even better but truthfully I cannot help myself when the new releases come out I have to have them I know one day I will get to read them and yes they are all romance books I do love my HEA.

As for food yep chocolate cadburys block chocolate Tim Tams and a really nice cup of coffee go hand in hand with a romance book in my eyes and I have had some of those Godiva truffles and I love them as well but I can't get them here in Oz.

Have Fun
Helen

Coffee. Books. I have a weird addiction to smoked salmon, smoked almonds, good salami and cheeses...all the stuff my mom used to serve at cocktail parties when I was a kid. I'm also addicted to advice columns-Graham Norton, the Agony Uncle, is my fave and my daily guilty pleasure is reading Page Six in the NY Post.

gigi said...

Dark chocolate and books.
Gotta have it:)

Christine Wells said...

Christie, oh, you have come to the right place, talking about addictions!

Mine are all the same as yours (never tried the gingerbread coffee, though, that's a new one I might soon grow addicted to!)

Lindt chocolate, choc chip cookies, thai chili crab dip, cinnamon scrolls... I'd better not continue as they seem to all be food! But of course, reading is an addiction and so is email. I've cut back facebook, which was an addiction at one stage but took too much time. And of course...Sven. He is a habit I just can't give up!

Congrats mariska!

Laurie G said...

I'm addicted to ice cream! Heath Bar by Breyers and Edy's mint chocolate chip! DELISH!!

I love to buy books for myself and jewelry for my daughter.

Chocolate!! I munch on Nestle Toll House morseld and plain M&M's!!YUMMY!

hrdwrkdmom aka Dianna said...

I see why I am addicted to the Banditas, you all love the same things I do. I am addicted to dark chocolate, potato chips, and books. I now seem to be developing a new addition to .............. the Food Network. I don't know how it happened, I haven't watched tv in years and now there is this absolute need to watch those chefs work their magic.

Deb Marlowe said...

Hi Christie!

Research books and chex mix. Can't have enough of either!

Though, I never turn down chocolate either, especially dark.

Now, I'm hungry!

Christie Kelley said...

Congrats on the GR, Mariska!

Christie Kelley said...

flchen1, I agree that an addition to books is a very good thing. And really, I don't see a problem with coffee and chocolate either.

Christie Kelley said...

Donna, have you tried any of the teas that come in bottles? I love the Blackforest tea from Honestea. It's awesome! And I'm with you on the caffeine...No one wants to be around me if I didn't get my coffee in the morning.

LOL about the Suduku. I have a book in my car for when I stuck waiting to pick up one of the kids.

Christie Kelley said...

So Mariska, I'm thinking you like chocolate. :) I can't remember the last time I had chocolate milk.

Christie Kelley said...

Jane, I've never walked into Sephora. So you like the salty snacks. I'm not a big fan. A few chips are good but then I stop. Since high blood pressure runs in my family, that's probably a good thing.

Gillian Layne said...

Jane, you sound like my daughter. She definitely has a make-up addiction. And she has such a skill with colors and application! She certainly didn't get it from me. :) I thought she would hyperventilate the first time she walked into Sephora.

Coke is my essential addiction. I've discovered Mountain Dew as well, which is a bad thing. How I wish they made Code Red in diet!

I am addicted to the computer game 7 Wonders. It's a puzzle game, you line up the matching pieces and they all disappear? I can sit and play it and feel my blood pressure drop.

Don't put my in your drawing, I already have your awesome book.:)

The Romance Dish said...

Christie, are you sure you're not my long lost twin? Our addictions are so similar! :-D I love Starbucks--caramel macchiatos and caramel fraps are particular faves!

Reading, chocolate, french fries....my list is long and varied. Nothing bad, but do you think there's a 12 step program for our addictions? LOL

Gannon Carr said...

Okay, ignore the Romance Dish avatar on the last comment, it's me!

Milk chocolate.
At this time of year, egg nog. (So addicted to it, I buy tons of it and put it in the freezer to enjoy in January.) I've also gotta have my Pepsi.
Books; my TBR pile can be huge at times.

Christie Kelley said...

Hi Helen, if Tim Tams are now in the US then don't give up hope that Godiva will make it down under sometime. I don't buy too many books but I get a ton going to conferences. Unfortunately, there are quite a few that I will never read. So I'm now at the point that I will probably start to give away bundles of books on my website. I have to clear out some of them soon.

Christie Kelley said...

PinkPeony, I'm with you on the cheese. I love cheese too but try to avoid it when I can. Now that the holidays are here, cheese is everywhere!

Christie Kelley said...

gigi, I'm with you completely. I love dark chocolate. It's only 9:30am and I'm craving chocolate!

Kirsten said...

I'm going out on a limb here and admitting I'm addicted to new (to me) clothes. Which I guess means I'm addicted to shopping. :-)

No, not the "bankrupt your family" level of addiction, but I don't think I could go a month without something new. Luckily, I have a great consignment shop a mile away that I go to, both to consign and buy. It's great fun.

Christine, no wonder Sven doesn't have time for me! He's always at your beck and call. I have to satisfy my massage addiction elsewhere! :-)

Christie Kelley said...

Christine, you can send Sven over there if you need a break. I have revisions, a novella and book 5 to finish. I could use a little Sven.

And if you like warm spicy things then you must try the gingerbread latte. What I didn't tell everyone is my Starbucks addiction is all because of my grocery stores. What is with them putting Starbucks in the grocery stores? How can you go grocery shopping and not buy coffee?

It's just wrong.

Christie Kelley said...

Laurie, I have kicked my ice cream addiction. I still reach for it some days but now it maybe twice in a month. I love the Breyer's mint chip ice cream.

Christie Kelley said...

LOL, Dianna. I love to watch Ace of Cakes but that's the only thing I watch on the Food Network. The cakes they make are amazing. If only I could afford one. Maybe some day...

Christie Kelley said...

Hi Deb, I'm starving already. It's not right! I love to find a good research book too.

I'm going to drink my second cup of coffe and ignore my sudden need for chocolate.

Christie Kelley said...

Gillian, you sound like my son with the Mountain Dew. He goes to work and immediately buys one before he goes on the register (he's a part-time cashier for a grocery store).

What is Code Red? I've never heard of it before.

As far as computer games, my addiction is Bejewled2 on Yahoo games.

Christie Kelley said...

LOL Gannon, I was wondering whose twin I was :) I think I'm a little short to be your twin. I like the caramel macchiatos too but won't buy them if I can get the gingerbread.

Susan Sey said...

Oooh, Diet Coke, no question. I was off it for about six years when I was either preggers or nursing, but the instant I weaned my last baby I was like, "Fill this cup, pronto!"

I like it from the soda fountain, plenty of crushed ice, unlimited refills. My youngest goes to one day a week of preschool, & I take my lap top & travel mug to my local bagel shop where I have one of those unlimited refills cards. I hunker down with my latest work in progress and all the Diet Coke my little soul desires.

Because my soul desires so much, I don't keep it in the house. It's a strictly 'out' treat. :-)

Christie Kelley said...

Deb, thanks for the hint about freezing the eggnog. My 12 yr old is completely addicted to it. I like it small quantities but he'll take a 12 oz glass and drink it down. If only I could get him to drink that much milk.

Christie Kelley said...

Kirsten, it's nice to see a non-food addiction :) Clothing is good.

Christie Kelley said...

Susan, I kicked my diet coke addiction. That was a tough one but husband was on this nutrasweet is bad for you kick. I bought some for a party last week...I'm in heaven. I'm trying to be good but it tastes soooo good.

Janga said...

I share the common book addiction. Mine is so bad that one of our house rules is that for every book that I buy, one has to go to a friend, to Friends of the Library, or to my church youth group for their annual yard sale. I'm also addicted to my favorite boards and blogs. I was away from the computer for most of yesterday, and I suffered withdrawal. :)

Silvia said...

Here's 5 of my addictions in random order.

Jane Austen's P&P, Colin Firth & the lake. Need I say more.

Romance novels, they let me dream out loud. And always put a smile on my face.

Mac and cheese, it's just such a comfort food for me. And it brings back memories.

Christmas, I love it, I LOVE it, I LOVE IT! All year round. Well basically I'm obsessed with it.

Shoes, a girl can never have too much shoes though. So does this count as an addiction?

Louisa Cornell said...

Is Mariska addicted to the GR or is he addicted to her?

Like you, Christie, I have been addicted to reading since the moment I deciphered my first word on paper. I always had to have one book in my hand and at least two in reserve, just in case.

Now that I am writing my reading has slowed down but NOT my buying of books. I know I'll get to the all eventually. And having stacks of them around me makes me feel secure. As long as there are books in the house I will never be bored or lonely.

Research books! The more I have the more I want. Anything written about Regency period England and I HAVE to have it! And most of the sites I visit feed that addiction with lists of books!

CHOCOLATE !!! Almost any kind in any form. My current flame is Andes Creme de Menthe cookies. YUM!!

And tea, hot and cold. Have to have it. Earl Gray, English Breakfast, Oolong and for iced tea if I can't get my Mom's Milo's tea will do.

Deb said...

Christie, my husband was drinking some egg nog the other night and I said that I didn't know he liked egg nog. His reply, "There's never any in the house long enough for me to drink any." He's so funny, hahaha, hmmmm, maybe. I do love my egg nog. :)

Christie Kelley said...

Janga, I get computer withdrawal too. I hate not getting my emails every day. It was really strange when my husband and I went to Italy over the summer and I couldn't check my emails. I felt so out of touch.

jo robertson said...

Great topic, Christie!

I'm totally addicted to Noah's Bagels, but only at the holidays when they have -- drumroll -- pumpkin bagels. Love, love, love them.

Christie Kelley said...

Hi Silvia,

I love Christmas too. I just posted on FB that my wrapping is almost done and we're supposed to have snow on Saturday. I hope that's true because I want a white Christmas for a change!

And shoes, well who doesn't love them :

Christie Kelley said...

Louisa, good question about the GR and Mariska. She must make it special for him.

Andes Creme de Mente cookies! Where are they? I haven't seen them at the store!

I make brownies every year at Christmas and put Andes mints on top so they melt. Then swirl the melted chocolate on top, cut them before the chocolate rehardens. They are fantastic!

Christie Kelley said...

Deb, do you want my eggnog cookie recipe? My nog boy loves them. And they're great with tea.

Christie Kelley said...

Hi Jo, we don't have any Noah's bagels out here. So I'll have to taek your word for it. But anything pumpkin is good with me.

Deb said...

Egg nog cookies, really? I'd like the recipe when you have time to jot it down...Thanks.

Oooo. Addictions. I have them. Oh yes. Reading, big time, but believe it or not I only discovered romances in the last few years. I resisted them all these years,(we are talking decades, here) now, I can't get enough.

I must have 3 boxes of used ones I have not even cracked the covers on! Voracious, I can buzz through one in a couple of nights. Then I need more.
Feed me. More romance! Yes, I am hooked.
Now, I am writing romance as well.
A sign I have truly fallen into the romance pit.
Don't throw me a rope...I am fine, sitting here in the pit with my mug of Lady Grey tea, my bowl of popcorn and my boxes of Romance.
Really, I am fine...LOL!

Louisa Cornell said...

Christie,

This year is the first time I have ever seen the Andes cookies. They have them at Wal-Mart. They came out around Thanksgiving and it may just be one of those holiday things. I'm enjoying them while they're here!

Andes holds a special place in my heart. My Mawmaw always had a box of Andes mints in her suitcase when she came to visit. She'd give us the mints in secret so Mom wouldn't know. It was our secret.

The cookies are DELISH !!!

Christie Kelley said...

Deb, here's the recipe for Eggnog Kringla:

4 cups of flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup of butter (not margarine or crisco)
1.5 cups of sugar
1 egg
1 cup of eggnog
Powered sugar and nutmeg

Mix the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Add baking powder, baking soda and nutmeg and mix. Add flour and eggnog, beating until well mixed. Cover and chill at least 4 hours.

Roll rounded teaspoonfuls on a floured surface into pencil-like strips. (about 8 inches long) Loop one end of the strip over the other end to form an oval with the two ends overlapping. (should look like a breast cancer ribbon). Move to ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 for 6-8 minutes. Sprinkle cookies with powered sugar and nutmeg.

Christie Kelley said...

Virginia, that is a great way to remember it :)

Christie Kelley said...

Drew, why would I throw you a rope. Welcome to the club. Read romance until you must write one. It happens to a lot of us. :)

Christie Kelley said...

Thanks, Louisa. I will look for them (even though I shouldn't)

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Hi, my name is Jeanne and I'm a Starbucks Addict.

Hi, my name is Jeanne and I'm a book addict - not just romance, but BOOKS - big ones, little ones, non-fiction, fiction, research, pictures...you name it, I'll read it up to and including the backs of cereal boxes.

Not toooo many other addictions, legal or otherwise. Grins. Plants maybe. I love to buy trees and garden stuff.

Hi, my name is Jeanne and I'm a tree-buying addict...

Not quite the same ring to it, eh?

Starbucks, though...Yeah. THAT I'm addicted to. (she says, slurping her venti mocha!)

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Wait, wait...I forgot! Boots and shoes. Yeah, there's an addiction!

Grins.

Christie Kelley said...

I'm envious, Jeanne. I would love a Starbucks right now but I don't want to go out in the cold to get one. They really need a delivery service :)

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Okay, now see, Silvia brought up another one. I don't think I'm addicted though. Just because I insist on blogging on Halloween every year and decorate the house for it nearly as much as I do for Christmas, and keeping Halloween stuff in my office...that doesn't mean I'm addicted. Does it? Really? Grins.

Ohhhh, and Louisa, tea isn't an addiction, it's like blood and oxygen, it's a necessity.

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Christie, it was my reward for my mile walk in the 29 degree weather. It's sunny but by golly it's ccccccold out there. The dogs loved it though. The 14 year old Dalmatian was prancing and bouncing like a puppy, even as he was shivering. Grins. The IWS, with is "I'm a woolly mammoth" coat though, was absolutely delighted.

Me, I was jonesing for a Starbucks the whole way....

Nancy said...

Mariska, congrats on taking home the rooster. Fedora, better luck next time!

Christie, I'm also addicted to reading. The whole concept of owning books as decoration only escapes me altogether. We once considered selling our house. When the realtor came to look at it, he said, "Y'all gonna have to do something with these books. People don't like to see a lot of books when they come look at a house."

Like, what people? Martians? we wondered. But apparently he meant regular Americans. Clearly not ones we understood.

I also am a sucker for movies with boom, though I suspect I'm not addicted since I'm fully capable of passing one up. Whereas passing up a bookstore--going by without going in--is very difficult.

Chocolate, of course!

Jigsaw puzzles, though I've had to wean myself--too busy to work them quickly, and we need the dining room table for mundane things like eating.

Crossword puzzles--have a hard time seeing one and not grabbing a pen. Yes, I work them in ink, which sometimes results in a mess, but I have trouble seeing pencil on newsprint anymore, alas.

Dogs. A house is not a home without a dog, imho.

Nancy said...

Donna, another puzzle addict! Yay!

Louisa Cornell said...

SHOES !!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEE !! Says the woman with an entire closet of shoes and boots in plastic boxes carefully labeled and organized. I don't know. Does owning a couple of hundred pairs of shoes make me an addict. Does the fact my brothers call me Little Imelda mean anything really?

Nancy said...

Mariska, have a great vacation!

I noticed your liking for Cadbury chocolate. I discovered it as a summer student at Oxford--Cadbury caramellos, yum-oh! as Rachael Ray would say. Back then, you couldn't get those here.

Nancy said...

Helen, I love my HEA, too. I just finished an SF novel in which the heroine's love interest, through two books, dies at the end--though there were hints he's not REALLY dead. Kind of like Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn't REALLY dead.

Sorta dead but not really doesn't work for me. That doesn't qualify as HEA, and even in science fiction and fantasy, I want the relationship to be HEA. So now I'm disgruntled.

And I'm carefully not naming the author because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone else out there who's reading it. *sigh*

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Louisa, there are programs for people like you...

Of course, there are also Nordstroms Shoe Sales, so, hey, I know which one I'd rather go to! Hahahahha!

Christie Kelley said...

Good for you walking today, Jeanne. I really should since I didn't get on the elliptical this morning but I keep watching the guys building my deck and they look like they're freezing. I don't want to go out until I have to tonight for my 12 yr old's band concert.

BTW, Jeanne...80% chance of snow on Saturday. Yippee! Go buy your bread, milk and toilet paper now!!

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

*note to self* Get bread. Find snow shovel. Get marshmallows for hot chocolate.

Thanks Christie! Grins.

(BTW, I'm stocked up on TP - Costco, you know. Grins. Now that's TMI, isn't it?)

Christie Kelley said...

Nancy, your realtor comment made me chuckle. Although, this is said to say, I don't show many houses with as many books as I have.

And sorry, but for me, a house isn't a home without a cat.

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

With two dogs, and having had as many as 4 dogs and 2 cats, I'll agree with both you and Nancy, Christie! Critters. Gotta have 'em, right Louisa?

Hellie Sinclair said...

Chinese food is my food addiction. Higher than even ice cream or Starbucks, though those both rate high, I'd rather have crab rangoon and steamed dumplings and lo mein any day of the week than anything.

I've been having an off period with romance novels. (I'm not sure why.) Though I did score some good Lorraine Heath books lately...and others. I haven't been destitute. But when I was younger, everything seemed good...everything seemed plausible. For some reason, I've gotten a lot more discerning about it. It's almost irritating. Now I'm reading The Greatest Knight (a historical fiction about William Marshal, and it's great and has romance too.)

But as far as addictions go, my worst has got to be Harry Potter. I mean, my Pirates of the Caribbean fandom is pretty bad, but it's nothing like the Harry Potter stuff.

Christie Kelley said...

Jeanne, I agree. After living for four years without a pet, it's so nice to have a furry friend in the house again. Mine is currently sleeping on the floor of my office. Probably because we turn down the heat during the day and I use my portable heater, so my office is warm.

Deb said...

Thank you, Christie. Yum!

I forgot to add an addiction I used to have...I had to have matching socks for my shirts and blouses. If I had a raspberry pink blouse, um-hmm, and I did, I I would hunt for raspberry pink socks to match. After I got married, my husband asked me if it wouldn't just be simple enough to buy white socks. I mostly buy white now, but I do have a pair of striped browns to go with a sweater and I guess there is the cream pair to go with another sweater. Maybe I should mention the purple socks to go with my purple outfit. LOL! Okay, quite not over it yet.

Christie Kelley said...

MsHellion, I do love Chinese food too. Although (and I'm ducking here), I never got into the Harry Potter books. Okay, I'm hiding under my desk so no one throws something at me.

I would never want to give up making freshly ground black coffee - I love my coffe. Although I can drink the fancy creamy ones - I really do like the taste of coffee - the other drinks are more like dessert lol. And red wine - preferably a cabernet savignon. And of course books. Besides reading them - I collect them. That's my biggest addiction lol.

Christie Kelley said...

Good choices, Minna.

Christie Kelley said...

Drew, I love baseball too but it's not an addiction with me. I'm thrilled that my 12 yr old still wants to play little league. Being a little south of Baltimore we watch the O's here so the Red Sox are the enemy.

Minna said...

Oh, and I'm also addicted to books by David and Leigh Eddings.

Christie Kelley said...

catslady, we have similar tastes in addictions.

Nancy said...

Laurie--I love Heath Bar ice cream!

Also a big fan of Breyers mint chocolate chip. :-)

Nancy said...

Oh, yeah, my new addiction is the Times of London online. I've gotten in the habit of reading it daily.

Nancy said...

Minna, I loved David Eddings' Belgariad and the series that followed with the same characters (blanking on the name just now).

Maureen said...

Chocolate is a bad one because it's all kinds of chocolate from brownie and fudge to hot chocolate and chocolate candy. Romance novels are definitely an addiction. If I ever have a few minutes I want a book with me so I can take advantage of the time to read.

Nancy said...

Maureen wrote: If I ever have a few minutes I want a book with me so I can take advantage of the time to read.

Amen on that one! I don't believe in ever being without a book.

Christie Kelley said...

Maureen, you're right, chocolate is bad, but I love it!

I'm so addicted to chocolate and to buying books! Reading too of course, but I have to admit I buy more than I have time to read. But some day...

Anna Campbell said...

Mariska, again? People are starting to talk! Or Squawk, depends what species they are!

Christie, what a lovely post. I actually have a theory that most/all writers are slightly obsessive. I know I am. I know all the writers I know are - which means we're all prone to addictions! Like you, I'm addicted to books. At the moment, that addiction is showing itself in a compulsive need to visit the Book Depository and buy stuff! I've bought so many books there lately!

Christie Kelley said...

Eva, I know so many romance readers who buy more than they have time to read. It's funny because I don't know of many other genres where readers do that.

Christie Kelley said...

Anna, I think you might be right about writers being slightly or more than slightly obsessive. My critique partner and I have had this discussion.

pjpuppymom said...

Books! I have over 300 (I kid you not) books in my tbr stash and still I buy more books! Yikes!

Chocolate. I've spent the past week making chocolates for my Christmas packages and eating just about as many as I've given away. Chocolate-covered pretzels are the worst. I cannot eat just one!

Christie Kelley said...

PJ, I would go insane if I had a tbr pile that big. How do you decide what to read next?

American or some such, but I do
not shop at malls! Nothing against
the malls, or the stores therein,
it's just too much walking for my
older legs! Before I gave up malls,
it was the wonderful chocolate chip
cookies sold in the Food Courts!

Christie, loved this post- and OMG ME ME ME! haha Pick me :X I so want Every Night I'm Yours :D

Ok- fangirl moment over...
I'm addicted to reading as well. When I was little, my parents would punish me by taking away my books. "No more reading for you today!" O_o
No- seriously.
Otherwise... I'm addicted to a number of food network shows :X And online games. Bubble Spinner, Mind the Blox, Rome Puzzle/Cradle of Rome... I won't link you all to them so you can save yourselves. ;)

Congrats on the GR, mariska!

Oh. And baking/cooking. If/when I have time, I always go a little crazy. I can't make say, 24 cookies... I somehow always end up with 100+

Pat, I don't think it sounds anti-American at all. I rarely go to the mall. Or if I do, it's in one store and out the same store. I really don't like crowds so I'm not much of a mall person. I have been an internet shopper for so long I can't remember when I started.

OMG, lime, your parents would take away your books! I never minded if I was sent to my room because I always had a book to read there.

And thanks for the fan girl moment. You have no idea how wonderful that makes an author feel!

I can't do without my books, Coke and Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Not so big on Starbucks coffee but I love their cold Vanilla Frappucino. Sweet tooth, anything chocolate and Italian cream puffs with real Italian custard, yum!

i just remember that i have new addiction. I'm addicted to Signed copies from Authors :)
it just 'different' to have a copy w/o signature of the Author! :)

the Food Network.

LOL, dianna....I concur!!!

There is just something soothing and centering about watching sugar artists make replicas of the skyline of London throughout history or watching how 1 million candy canes are made each year...usually starting with "a secret mix of flavors"

And you ladies out there in the DC area....get LOTS of milk and bread! 35 inches? Are they kidding me? (or you?)

Christie Kelley said...

Pam P, I used to love Dunkin Donut's hot coffee from their shop. But honestly, the one near me has awful coffee. I'll drive past it to McDonald's when I want a cup of plain coffee.

Christie Kelley said...

mariska, lol about the signed copies.

Joan, I heard we could get 5+ inches. And that's a lot for us. I'm actually hoping it's more. The weather channel said east of I-95 should get more and I'm east of it.

Comfort Foods
*steak pizza with tomatoes and green olives...SO DA*M GOOD!
*Oddly enough so is a bowl of corn flakes with milk (lactose free)...
*and of course there's Poutine...a french canadian dish...french fries smothered with mozzarella cheese and gravy

Chocolate, and chocolate, oh, and chocolate. ;) And can't leave a mall without a trip to the bookstore. . . and a not as fun addiction, sure can't live without the news. Always on the tv set, and I'm checking it when I can on my netbook out. Can be annoying, actually, gives you a headache. :)

I've been addicted to reading since first grade. When I was in the 5th grade we moved into town close to the library. I walked there all the time and checked out as many books as they would let me. As for food, chips are usually my downfall. I love chips. Of course I love chocolate too, but if I had to choose I would probably pick chips.

Shopping in a mall? Starbucks, mais oui. I mean, I'm from Seattle. What else do you expect me to drink? Dunkin Donuts coffee? Sacrilege!

And is there anyone of the Banditas and Buddies who don't know which chocolate I prefer??

I'm very sparing in the clothes I buy or in anything personal. I'd much rather use my "pin money" for books, books, and many more books.
