Cheers!

by Tawny

I recently received line edits on my December novella, BABE IN TOYLAND, and was surprised by one of the line editor's questions - she didn't know what a Buttery Nipple was. What? I thought everyone knew that! It's like Sex on the Beach or a Screaming Orgasm - notorious in name, but maybe not so much in taste.
Buttery Nipple
1/3 oz Irish Cream
1/3 oz Vodka
1/3 oz Butterscotch Schnapps
combined in a shot glass

So this got me to thinking and perusing my handy dandy cocktail book. And lo and behold (once I got finished laughing) I found a few drinks for our Banditas...

For Jeanne;
Killer Colada
2 oz Coconut Rum
3 Tbs Coconut milk
3 Tbs Pineapple (crushed
2 cups crushed ice
Blend at high speed, serve with a pineapple wedge

For our Southern Belle's and their white hankies;
Mimosa
3 oz champagne
2 oz orange juice

(I really like that there is more alcohol than juice)

For all the gals in the deadline dungeon;
Nervous Breakdown
1 1/2 oz Vodka
1 oz Tequila
splash cranberry juice
soda
Combine the first three in a tall glass, fill with soda
For Foanna and Madame, with their witty linguistic battles;

Poet's Punch
1 oz Irish Mist
1 stick cinnamon

twist lemon
twist orange
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup milk

Heat the milk, cinnamon stick and citrus twists to boiling. Add vanilla and Irish Mist. Strain, sprinkle with nutmeg.
For Trish and Nancy, who love their comics;
Green Hornet
1/2 oz Vodka
1/4 oz Midori
1/2 oz Sweet and Sour
Shake with ice & serve

Are you getting the impression I can go all day... I can, this is fun! I have no clue if any of these drinks taste any good, but I do love the names! So what do you think, a couple more? Yeah? Okay, here we go...

For Aunty Cindy;
Irish Buck
1/2 oz Irish Whiskey
Twist of lemon
Ginger-ale
Pour Whiskey into glass with ice, add lemon and top with ginger-ale

For Wonder Beth (cuz she loves me);
Jump Up and Kiss Me
1 1/4 oz Dark Rum
4 oz pineapple juice
1/2 lime juice
dash angostura
Shake well and serve over ice
For all the writers out there;
Dark 'N Stormy (Night)
1 1/2 oz Black Seal Rum
4 oz Ginger Beer
Pour rum over ice and top with ginger beer

And because I couldn't resist...
Red Headed Slut
1/2 oz Jagermeister
1/2 oz Peach Schnapps
1/2 oz cranberry juice
Shake over ice and strain into shot glass

Okay, this was fun. So what did you think? Have you actually tasted any of these drinks? What did you think? I'll admit, its been a long time since my bar hopping wonder years and now a'days my drinking pleasure lends itself to unsweetened black iced tea, Mikes hard lemonade or any form of margarita. What's your favorite drink? For everyday, for fun and for those hard partying times?

Hey Helen :-) I can't wait to see what the Rooster wants to drink!!! Or is it going to be - what he drives you to drink?

Love them all I have had a buttery nipple before but I would love to taste them all although I am sure I would be legless by the time I got to the last one LOL.I do love trying different cocktails and one of the nicest ones I have had is a mud slide not sure what is in them but you can drink them like milkshakes LOL.
For me if I am out having a drink I drink scotch and coke but do love tia maria and milk or kaluha and coke and then of course a nice glass of wine or champagne depending on where I am. Normally I drink pepsi max or coffee LOL.

The GR and I will be going to dinner at my Son and DILs place with Jayden and Hayley so he is sure to have some fun and then we will go to Barbara's in the morning for a cup of tea made with tea leaves and in a pot very English and very nice.

Have Fun

It could be either he may well have a couple of beers tonight at my son's place or if he drives me to drink I have a bottle of Johnny Walker red label that I can take just in case LOL

Congrats Helen on the rooster! What are you two doing today?

I will have to say I have had a Buttery Nipple before because my sister makes them! I am not a big drinker but have been know to party a little with my sister's. She usually makes drink with different flavors of rum mixes them along with some fruit juices and sprite. They are pretty good.

Hey Tawny! I'm deep in the revision cave/nervous breakdown padded room, so I definitely need one of those. Actually, it's funny you posted this, because I had such a hankering for a frosty mixed drink on Sat, I ran out and got ingredients for strawberry margaritas! YUM!

Now, as soon as this $%$@ book is turned in, I'm going to hit that margarita hard! Wahoo!

Hey, Helen, he must have a yen for some Tim Tams! Have fun!

Tawny, what a fun post! Honestly, I giggle at some of those cocktail names. Like the one you picked for Christine and me!

Actually slightly off subject but am I the only person who thinks cosmopolitans taste like cat's pee? At one stage, they were the drink that was served at every function I went to. Bleuch!

When I was younger, I used to love the sweet creamy cocktails like golden dreams and brandy alexanders - think I could still sink a few BAs should anyone want to shout me. They're yummy! Fluffy ducks. Grasshoppers. Pile on the calories and don't make the alcohol too obvious.

Writers conferences have taught me to LOVE margaritas. I'd never had one until I had a long wait at Dallas airport and the guy at the bar there talked me into trying one. Because I was a margarita virgin, he gave me a cocktail shaker full - six glasses, I kid you not. I felt no pain on that trip home from RWA! I also love mojitos. Yum!

Christine Wells said...

Hey, Tawny! LOL'ed at your designer cocktails. Poet's Punch. What a hoot! Oh, and who is this redheaded slut, hmm? Anyone I know?

You caught me just about to have a celebratory coffee -- FINALLY finished the first draft of my ms! Yay! I'll be celebrating further with something nice and alcoholic tonight. Must try some of those recipes--they sound fabu. I love cocktails but like you, I don't drink very much or often these days. Need the brain firing for writing!

I love ye olde Brandy Alexander if I'm in the mood for something creamy and of course Sex on the Beach is great for those hot summer nights. Har har. My dh is on a sparkling rose kick at the moment (he tells me it's fashionable now, but I just like it because it's champagne and it's pink! Perfect combination!)

Madame, off to raid the liquor cabinet...

Congrats, Helen!

Christine Wells said...

Ooh, and remember Foanna, the lemon drops I drank at the end of the conference last year? They were divine...even better when I asked for lime.

But oh, boy, they pack a punch!

Tawny said...

Ohh Helen, I had a mudslide once. I think I gained 10 lbs before I'd finished licking the bottom of the glass. I think there was cream in there. I'm sure there was chocolate. I'd imagine there was alcohol but I can't remember *g* I've drank a lot of run and coke in my day, but never scotch. Bet its yummy ;-)

What a fun day you and the Rooster have planned!!

Tawny said...

Wow, Virginia, it sounds like your sister mixes a wild drink!! I love rum punch. I haven't had any in years, but I have fond memories LOL.

Tawny said...

LOL Kirsten- I tell ya, I've got booze on the brain. I just came of a hellish deadline, only to have Art Fact Sheets due on my March book and line edits on my December release before I could celebrate. All I could think about was that relaxing drink time... and once I got to it, I was so tired I curled up with my iced tea *g* I think my wild drinking days are fading. But strawberry margaritas sound sooooo good!!!

Tawny said...

LOLOL Fo, I am so not a cosmopolitan fan! That and beer are ick to me. I'm love the name 'fluffy duck' That's so fun!

YAY that you're no longer a margarita virgin! and omg wow to that very sweet and generous bartender. Talk about losing your virginity in a big way *beg* I'd have been lucky to find my plane, let alone survive the ride home after all that -but I'd have enjoyed it all the same *g*

Tawny said...

Heeheehee Madame. I had fun researching drinks :-D And matching names and drinks? Oh so much more fun. No clue on the slut *sweetinnocentsmile*

Whoohooooooooooo Baby on finishing that first draft!!! I'll raise my glass of iced tea to you ;-)

Jane said...

Congrats on the GR, Helen.

Hi Tawny,
My cousin's next door neighbors are from Australia and they made us our first Buttery Nipple. I love mimosas. I had my first one when I got upgraded to first class on an international flight. I like fruity drinks and my favorites are mango margaritas and lychee martinis. Sex on the Beach is pretty tasty, too, and not too strong.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

OMG, Tawny, I adore Buttery Nipples, except mine don't have vodka and they taste like liquid butterscotch! Yummo!

Then there's Bellini's, Peaches, peach champagne, Peach Schnapps.

Oh yummo!

But if I'm at conference I usually get one Long Island Iced tea...Lots of alcohol in a large glass. One can last me a long time, which really is safest for me at conference!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Christine: but I just like it because it's champagne and it's pink!...

I've had a taste for champagne recently, too!

Deb said...

Some of these drink names are wild!

I'm not much of a drinker, but I do like regular margaritas with salt on the rim, strawberry or peach margaritas or daiquiris with sugar, and Mike's Hard Lemonade. We like sparkling grape juice and Shary likes to drink it in a "fancy" glass. :)

Deb Marlowe said...

I know who I'm going to hang out with at RWA. :-)

I had a buttery nipple once--after a HUGE event I was in charge of for the PTA--a bunch of exhausted moms went to wind down. It was yummy.

One is enough to do me in, though! I'm such a lightweight! Hardly ever have anything alcoholic, but I'm a fan of the girlie drinks. Sex on the Beach is my fave. I can't wait to have one with the Banditas in Orlando!

Trish Milburn said...

LOL! The names of these drinks crack me up. I honestly don't know how bartenders remember how to make all the different drinks.

jo robertson said...

Whoa, there, Tawny Depp, I'm a wee tipsy from the descriptions! They all sound yummy and almost make me wish I were a drinker! LOL.

Hilarious, Helen, I'll just bet the rooster would prefer a cold beer! He seems like that kinda guy.

Gillian Layne said...

What a perfect Monday morning post. :)

Suzanne beat me to the Long Island iced tea. Good stuff, baby! I'm with Deb; one drink will usually do me for quite a while. I'm a big fan of Maker's Mark and Coke, which is very good but has no cool name.

How about A Midsummernight's Dream?
5 fresh strawberries
1 tsp strawberry liqueur
1 oz Kirschwasser® cherry brandy
2 oz vodka
Schweppes® Russian tonic water

Mix the strawberries in a blender and pour over ice in a shaker. Add the vodka, kirsch and strawberry liqueur to the shaker. Shake well, pour into a highball glass, and fill up with the russian water.

Cassondra said...

Tawny what a great blog!

And so appropriate for the lair since we have our own bar and all...

I know how to make all of those drinks but I haven't tasted any of them because I'm just really not a liquor drinker. I don't like the way liquor makes me feel.

I LOVE wine, however, as most of y'all are well aware. :0/

Wine is my drink. Less-expensive for every day meals, and nicer, splurge wine for special occasions.

Yup, I'm a wine girl all the way.

Louisa Cornell said...

Is it the cocktail hour already? I REALLY slept in today!

Hey, Helen, ask the GR to help you come up with a cocktail called the Golden Rooster.

You are looking at a lifelong teetotaler here. Never had a sip of alcohol in my nearly 52 years. With so much Native American blood on one side and a family of hard-drinking Welshmen on the other (the Budweiser truck delivering to the family reunions was a hint) I decided that being a musician was hedonistic enough. Combining that with liquor seemed like a really bad idea.

However, I am a great bar tender. And I throw a mean keg party / barbecue. My tequila sunrises are a particular favorite, as are my White Russians. (However, the ingredients in a White Russian always make me shudder.)

However, once I sell a book I invite everyone to witness the breaking of my 50 plus year drought with a bottle of champagne! Preferably pink champagne, Madame Christine!

Cassondra said...

Trish said:

LOL! The names of these drinks crack me up. I honestly don't know how bartenders remember how to make all the different drinks.

We have a secret.

But I can't tell or I'd have to kill all y'all. ;0)

Nah...it's word association. It gets a little crazy sometimes, but if you learn the word associations and know basic cocktail recipes and configurations, it's not that hard. When I graduated from bartending school I knew 250 drinks and could pour 14 cold-called drinks in 8 minutes. Not the fastest, but not too shabby.

Hellie Sinclair said...

I've had lots of buttery nipple shots. *LOL* They're good!

I haven't had any of the others, but I'd definitely be up for trying the Killer Colada and the Jump Up and Kiss Me drinks.

Hellie Sinclair said...

Oh, and favorite drinks:

Everyday: Diet Mountain Dew
For fun: PEPSI. God, I love regular Pepsi, but bad for the diet.
For hard drinking: (Sometimes I use the Pepsi for hard drinking, but sometimes I have to hit up Tropical Liquors and get a frozen drink. Either an Amaretto Sour--sooooo goood--or maybe a rum runner.)

Cassondra said...

You girls and your Long Island teas..do you KNOW how much alcohol is in those things if they're made right? OMG!

Just put a pillow under the table and say good night because I'll be sliding under there...

Anna Sugden said...

Ah Tawny - you're bringing back fond memories of balmy Arizona evenings and rum punches *g*.

I'm a mojito gal. I love daiquiries too. Not too fond of tequila, though. And Pimms always goes down easily - too easily.

When I was at Uni we used to like to order 'A long, slow, comfortable screw' or if we were really daring 'a long, slow, comfortable screw against the wall'. No idea what went into them.

The most lethal cocktail (other than the ever-popular Long Island Iced Tea *g*) was one I once had on Valentines Day - a Pink Fizz - grenadine, pink champagne, raspberry Stoli and, I think, rum. Delish.

Nancy said...

Tawny, my favorite drink is iced tea. I like water much better than I once did, though.

Oh, you meant my favorite alcoholic drink? Hmm. I used to love those giant fruit daquiris, and then I think my metabolism changed so I started feeling ill, though not intoxicated, from just one. Also from anything mixed with Coke, which I ordinarily love.

So if I'm ordering something "hard," it'll usually be bourbon and ginger ale, which I can drink until the cows come home, a brandy Alexander or that Buttery Female Anatomy thing, which someone introduced me to at the Dallas conference. I absolutely refuse to say that word in public. Especially to guy bartenders. If I'm going to drink that, someone with a less ingrained Presbyterian streak has to order it.

The Green Hornet sounds interesting. Does it come with a side dish of Cato?

Helen, congrats on the rooster!

Tawny said...

Mmmmm, Mango Margarita sounds so good, Jane! I haven't had one, but will be on the lookout.

My fave is a pomegranate margarita. Its not as sweet as strawberry, not as tart as lime, its juuuust right :-)

Thats so cool that your neighbors introduced you to buttery nipples *g* And Yummmmmmm on the mimosas. They always feel so elegant and upscale to me.

Tawny said...

oooh, Suz. I've had one long island iced tea and it knocked me on my tushie!!! I'm impressed that you can make one last :) Especially with the cost of drinks at conference.

Now champagne... yes, you should be getting used to sipping the bubbly and celebrating :-D

Deb said...

Has anyone ever heard of a Singapore Sling? In the 60s, my folks went out to eat with some friends at a fancy supper club called The Embassy and were told the wait for dinner would be over an hour. So, they went to the lounge to have a pre-dinner drink and the friend suggested a Singapore Sling to my mom. She said they were sweet and fruity and had 3 of them. To this day, she says the name should be called Singapore Slide because she almost slid out of her chair when she went to stand up. Ooh, was my dad mad at her for being slightly tipsy! :)

Tawny said...

Mmm, Deb, we have similar drinking tastes. We'll have to meet in the bar at conference ;-)

I love the idea of grape juice in a fancy glass :-)

Tawny said...

Wooot, Deb! Sex on the Beach in Orlando (it sounds like a theme).

I'm so there.

I love that the PTA picked buttery nipples as their wind down drink, btw :-D

Tawny said...

Trish, I had so much fun reading through the book at all these names. Many are definitely laugh-out-loud worthy!

Great question for a bartender, btw. We need to find one and ask :-D

Nancy said...

Deb, I used to love Singapore Slings. And sloe gin fizzes. However, they now have the same unfortunate effect as the daquiris. Too bad. They're so pretty.

Deb said...

@Nancy--Presbyterian streak, love it! (My home church is First Pres in Marion, Iowa.)

Tawny said...

Jo, I learned about new alcohols I never knew existed when I was writing this post!!! And then I woke up with a hangover *g* (kidding)

The Rooster does seem like a beer bird, doesn't he? Or moonshine. I can imagine him belting down so home brewed hooch!

Tawny said...

Mmm, Gillian. I love the sound of ANYTHING with fresh strawberries. Totally delish. And isn't that such a romantic name? I wonder it thats one of those 'make you feel romantic' drinks?

Tawny said...

LOL Cassondra - I bow to your wine expertise. I'm a wine-dork. I can't tell the difference between high end wine and the stuff you get in a box (don't throw things at me, please!).

You'll have to educate me, okay? I'd love to have a little wine expertise going.

Tawny said...

Louisa, we'll definitely be toasting with pink champagne!!! And soon, I hope :-)

I'm impressed that you zoned in on a potential problem and avoided it. You are a strong, smart woman! and I'm trying not to laugh at the Budweiser delivery to the family reunion *g*

Tawny said...

WOW, DeHo - that's impressive!! And I don't know why I didn't know you were a bartender. We might need to talk :-) I'm thinking a bartender character will be featured soon and I'd love inside tips!!

Tawny said...

;-) sounds like you've done your share of buttery nipples, Ms. Hellion.

I do want to try a couple of these drinks, but some made me go eeek. I guess it's all an acquired taste, right? The only alcohol I don't need coated with lots of sugar is tequila. But when I do tequila shots I have bad flashbacks to my wild days, so its better that I avoid them.

Tawny said...

Ooooh, I have fond memories of Pepsi. I used to love it! I stopped drinking soda when I was pregnant with my oldest, though, and never quite made it back.

catslady said...

Someone introduced me to the buttery nipple (what a name) and I love it but my all time favorite and special occasion drink is a black russian - vodka and kuluha. Normall I drink red wine - cabernet savignon is my favorite.

Tawny said...

Ahhh, rum punch. Those were good times, huh, Anna?!

I have no idea how I missed all those comfortable screws!! I wonder if they are gin based or vodka based *g* Tooo funny!!!

The pink fizz sounds nummy. We'll have to see if we can find one in Orlando.

Tawny said...

:-D Nancy, my favorite drink is iced tea, too. I'm rarely without it.

I hear you on the metabolism changes and how we can drink. You'd think now that we are older and wiser, we'd be able to drink more than when we were younger and wilder, right?

More often than not, I just get tired and want to go to sleep now *g*

I think part of the craziness of these drink names is being forced to say them aloud to a strange bartender. Maybe it requires a few drinks, first?

And what would a side dish of Cato include, I wonder? ;-)

Tawny said...

Deb, I've heard of a Singapore Sling but haven't ever tasted one. It sounds delish, if a bit lethal!

Tawny said...

Catslady, you and Cassondra are the wine aficionados, I guess :-) The Black Russian sounds good, too, though.

I've had a taste of a pina colada,

then I found I am a diabetic, which

love mimosas and margaritas but can
only have a sip. I try to stick to
a glass of a nice wine, but that also is a rarity. I'm just not much of a drinker or party-er, unless it's a launch party in the Lair! Then, hoo boy, it's me for

swinging-and-swaying-from-the-ole

Tawny, you rascal, this is FUNNY!!! Hey Helen! People are going to start to taaaallllkk about you and that rooster! :>

Tawny, I've not read through all the comments, but had to LOL about the Killer Colada. Grins. *bowing* Thank you, thank you very much. Hahahah!

Bein' a Suth'ner, I've had Mimosas of course, and I've had a green hornet (bleech!), but none of the others. I usually reserve my drinking - and drink experimenting - for conference. So I'm going to try a buttery nipple this time.

If I'm out, it's White Russians - Kahlua, vodka and cream (hey Helen, you too?) or Polar Bears, which is Kahlua, vodka and icecream. Grins. What's not to love? Or Irish coffee. Otherwise, I'm just a wine gal. :>

Cassondra said...

Tawny said:

I have no idea how I missed all those comfortable screws!! I wonder if they are gin based or vodka based *g* Tooo funny!!!

Well, see there's sort of a secret language which works MOST of the time. If it has Russian in it, it's going to have vodka--which makes sense, right?

But there are others which aren't as obvious. If it says navel, it's gonna have orange juice. If it says "slow" in the title it's gonna have sloe gin in it.

Some make less sense though. Like anything with "Golden" in the title (Golden Cadillac, for instance) is gonna have Galliano in it. If it has "comfortable" in the name, the drink will include Southern Comfort.

So you can kind of guess at the drink by its name sometimes.

Some of them are really complicated though, and you can't tell a darn thing from the name-- you just have to know what's in the drink.

Jeanne (AKA The Duchesse) said...

Ooh, I forgot Gin and Tonics. Those are great in hot weather!

I've had mint juleps too, but they're tooooooo sweet for me. (This from a woman who thinks sweet tea is supposed to be reallllly SWEET!) And I like a rum and co'cola now and again.

I have worked in a bar here and there at the club I work at we have 12 bars in all although it is not a job I liked that much I really don't like beer on my hands LOL. The first shift I worked in the bar after getting trained (it was a long time ago) it was a really busy night and for the most part I was pulling beers and making boubon and cokes etc (because we actually have a cocktail bar and I have never worked in that one) a young girl came up to me and asked for a sh*t on the grass I had no idea what she was talking about lucky for me one of the girls who was doing clean up came into the bar to put glasses in the dishwasher helped me make it so here it is
Sh*t on the grass
In a shot glass put midori (green)
slide Baileys Irish Cream over a teaspoon so it sits on top of the midori then drink.
BTW they are very nice LOL.
Some of these drinks sound fantastic

Have Fun

Tawny said...

Pat, isn't alcohol basically liquid sugar with a kick? So so bad for diabetics.

You're right, too about the parties in the Lair being awesome! All those virtual drinks are extra smooth and have NO hangover effects!! Nothing better.

Methinks we need to have another party soon. Me really does think this *g*

Tawny said...

LOL Jeanne, what would you say if I said it was that drink name and thinking of you that inspired this entire blog?

It was :-D

I think we should create a Lair drink ;-) Something naughty and fun and friendly. What do you think?

Tawny said...

LOL Jeanne, I can do my margaritas (usually do prefer them tart though) but I can't drink the sweet drinks anymore. Even rum and coke is too sweet for me.

Of course, I take my tea without sugar, so that probably says a lot too ;-)

Tawny said...

Okay, Helen. You win the most wince-worthy drink title :-D Ack, but it does sound tasty. Which is gross to even say LOL.

Unsweetened tea? URG!!! Bleeeech!!!

And tea with milk or cream???? URG! BLEECH!!!

Sweeet tea. Also known as Sweetee.

One of the things I miss most about living outside the South is that I can't get real sweet tea. HEre, in DC, you ask for tea and they want to know if you want it hot or cold. *eye roll* As if. In the South, it's sweet-or-unsweet? It's always iced unless it's colder than an ice cube at the North Pole outside. Then, they might consider making it hot.

Grins.

Unsweetened...urg.

Now that said, I don't do too many sweet/fruity alcoholic drinks. They're just too prone to kickin' my patoot. I don't taste the alcohol, therefore...yeah. You mentioned Mike's Hard Lemonade. That's good. The hard Cider you can get in the fall, which is, I think also Mike's, is also fabulous!

Beth Andrews said...

LOL! I love that you dedicated a drink to me *g* I haven't had a Jump Up and Kiss Me but I'd love to try one ;-)

I was ROFL when I read your post because at the wedding we attended Saturday, I heard the bartender take an order for a Sex On the Beach and I was sort of surprised to see it was ordered by an older gentlemen *g*

In His Secret Agenda, I researched drinks and found Sex On The Brain which the hero made to impress the heroine. It was fun reading all the cocktail recipes.

My favorite drink is a margarita - I love the original, fruit ones, over ice or blended. Basically, give me some tequila, some lime and a bit of sugar and I'm a happy girl :-)

Fun post, Ms. Tawny! I must admit I've become a bit of a purist lately. I usually stick with either Champagne, margaritas, gimlets, or a good red wine. Those are my staples. Oh, Tawny, it's been YEARS since I had a buttery nipple! That's a little trip down memory lane!

These days I'm most likely to have a glass of red wine. But if it's really hot out & there's grilling going on (or if there's a basket of chips nearby with good salsa) I'm all over a icy cold beer. Shove a lime wedge down in the bottle & I'm in heaven!

Susan, Are you going to share details of that trip down memory lane? *g* It sounds like there are some good stories in there!!

Oh man, you had to mention chips and salsa. These are my absolute favorite margarita accompaniments :-D
