KISSES

by Suzanne Welsh

There's something sinful in kisses.

No not THOSE kisses. Okay, yes they're milk chocolaty sinful, but that's not what we're talking about today. We're discussing kisses that melt your heart.

There's all kinds of kisses.

The first kiss. That moment when the flirting stops. Your heart skips one beat then speeds up to make up for it. You moisten your lips in anticipation. He leans in close, you lean in close. Your heads tilt to the side. Eyes closed, your breath mingles first. Then softly, his lips brush yours. Softly. Your lips cling to his for just the biefest of moments. Ah...

Then there's the kiss to the hand. Used for centruies as a court greeting between men and women, this is a fine art lost on most modern men. At least younger men. As they age, men see the pure seduction of holding their fair lady's hand in theirs, then bring it up to their lips, placing a soft, sweet kiss on the knuckles, or perhaps turning her palm upwards and leaving a slightly more sensual kiss on the tender folds of her hand, followed by a puckish wiggle of the eyebrow and a grin.

The hands on the face kiss. Mmmm one of my favorites! Grasp her head between his hands, and thoroughly kiss the stuffing out of her. Yep. Makes me all warm all over...er..okay let's move on.

The we've been married for 20 years and I'll give you a peck on the lips before I go off to work kiss. This is the tried and true kiss of two busy people, who want a quick reminder when they will be seperated for the day, that they still matter to the other person. Sometimes it turns into a more lengthy kiss that can keep both parties smiling and humming throughout their day!

The good-old fashioned French Kiss. Need we say more? Okay. The mixing of tongues, the tasting of each other. The kind of kiss that makes you slam back against a wall, tug at each other's clothes as you struggle down the hall to the bedroom. Deep. Soul-wrenching. HOT!

Then there's the one kiss that is a real turn on. The woman starts to pass her husband of 10 years, he grabs her by the arm, hauls her up hard against him and kisses her so hard, so deep, there is no question she's the one and only woman for him. SIGHHHHHH.

Okay...so those are my favorite kisses. What ones are yours?

I really love the upside down kiss in "Spiderman," but I guess that doesn't fly in real life. I can't stand chapped lips. All lips must be moisturized in order for a kiss to be pleasant.

Hmm, does it have to be a kiss on the mouth?

And no, it's not what you're thinking! Mind in the gutter, I tell you. I love the kiss on the neck. Gives me shivers:) But the hands on the face one in North & South. Ahhh. Lovely

Great post, Suz!

Jane, I've only seen Spiderman for the first time a couple of weeks back. That was a great kiss!

And congrats! You've won the Golden Rooster today:)

OOOOO! I agree, Jane! That upside down kiss was HAWT! I tried to convince the DH to give it a go, but he was NOT cooperative. :-P

LOL, Madame! Now HOW did you KNOW exactly where my mind went???

GREAT post, Suz! That piccie of the sailor kissing the nurse is one of my all time faves!

I love a good kiss scene, whether in a book or in a movie or in a TV show. The kiss is usually such a major turning point. Hmm, faves? Let's see. Of course, the final kiss in North and South. But you all knew I'd say that, I'm such a Richard Armitage fan girl. The almost-kiss in the movie of Pride and Prejudice in the dawn light. Although goodness, I would have loved some lip action there too! The wonderful kiss with the wild Scottish reel going on behind them in the firelight in The Last of the Mohicans. The kisses in the closet in How to Steal a Million. The kiss in the rain at the end of Breakfast at Tiffany's. The fantastic multiple kissing scene so Hitchcock could get past the censors in Notorious. Now, THAT'S a kiss! Yeah, Suz, I guess you could say I'm with you on kissing scenes - snork!

Jane, congratulations on the chook!

I think kissing is becoming a lost art for the most part. That is so very sad. I personally favor the hands on face.
Christine, I agree wholeheartedly! Love, love the kiss on the neck ::Swoon:: just turn my knees to jello.
The almost kiss?? No, no, don't tease me. :-)

I think you pretty much covered all of the kisses I like. Wow! But then there's the First Kiss Ever In Your Entire Life. The one that's wretchedly awful in form and technique ,but sweet and tentative and full of hope if not skill.
And Anna, we love all the same movie kisses! Go us!!!

Anna Campbell said...

Hey, Kelly, clearly we're women of taste! By the way, checked out your blog. It's great!

Helen said...

Congrats on the GR Jane

WOW Suzanne you really have those kisses covered love them all and totally agree with the married 20 years or more Hubby and I never leave the house or go to bed without a goodnight or bye kiss.
Gotta love the french kiss and movie kisses there have been so many over the years love the one from Here To Eternity on the beach and in Dirty Dancing when Johnny is teaching Babe to dance loved that one as well and Anna just about has the rest covered.
Have Fun
Helen

Loved the upside down kiss from Spiderman. Very sexy. But I do agree not very realistic for most people.

Suz, you just about covered every kiss. One more of my favorites is the backed against the wall when the man has his hands on the wall, trapping the woman with just his lips. No other parts touching. Ahh...

And since I've been married 24 yrs next month, I can totally relate to the 20 yr kiss. We do it every day.

I wanted to find a picture of Kevin Klein kissing the sleeping Meg Ryan in French Kiss, but was unsucessful. That's one of my all time favorites!

Oh, my, Suz (fanning self rapidly with morning newspaper), what an . . . uh, informative post!

I'm with you on the hands on the face kiss. It speaks of caring and possession mixed all together, the good kind of possession of course, none of that stalking stuff!

Christine, since my husband is quite tall (6 foot 3) and I am rather short (5 foot 4), the neck kiss from the back works wonders and I don't get a kink in my neck!

Oh, yeah, and the Spiderman upside down kiss. Hmmmm.

Hellie Sinclair said...

Definitely the hands on the face and the Navy Man Kissing the Nurse kiss--I have that picture in my office. And on the front of my purse, too. (I'm obsessed with that picture.)

I like the kiss on the forehead...I feel sort of cherished after that. And kisses to the eyelids...

Kelly Krysten said...

Hey, Anna! Thanks for visiting the blog. I'm glad you liked it.

Tiffany Clare said...

Kiss scenes are hot. I love them. All of them. But it's best when both parties become so lost in them everything else/everyone else, isn't there. Okay, so that's more likely to happen with a French kiss... guess that's my favourite. :)

Where's the French kiss pic from?

Fedora said...

Lovely post, Suz! You've covered the gamut!

Christine, a kiss on the neck or right by your ear can be quite... shiver-inducing :)

I also have to say that I'm enjoying those sometimes sticky kisses my kids offer spontaneously--I'm going to enjoy those while I can ;)

Congrats on the GR, Jane! *blowing a kiss*

Hi Suz!--waving from Missouri, where I'm seriously considering taking a course on ark building!

I love the sneak-up-behind-you-when-you're-doing-dishes-and-kiss-you-on-the-neck kiss. Even after nearly 27 years, dh can turn my knees to jelly with that one. :)

Tracy G.

Jane Graves said...

Wow, Suz. That was quite the comprehensive list! Yum. I love all of those!

One kiss I'm NOT fond of? The "May I kiss you?" kiss. In college, I actually had a guy ask permission once. Kinda takes all the spontaniety out of the moment, you know?

Beth Andrews said...

Great post, Suz! I love all those kisses and the picture of the Navy man kissing the nurse! It's one of my all time favorites *g*

I love the first kiss in The Bourne Identity. Jason's helping cut and color her hair and there's such a need between them but he's trying to resist (he doesn't even know who he is after all) but when they give in - wooee!! ;-)

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Jane, congratulations on winning the GR this morning!!

I, too, love that upside down kiss in Spiderman! It's unique. I doubt though I could get my hubby to try doing it on a regular basis! :)

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Well, Christine, it doesn't HAVE to be on the mouth. :)

I have to confess, the hands to the face kiss is one of my favorites.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Aunty Cindy, isn't that sailor and nurse kiss the most?! Such exuberance!! I believe it was captured on V-E day, so I'm thinking heavy-duty partying and kissing took place on that day. ;)

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Oh Anna, so many good movie kiss scenes!! I love the one in The Empire Strikes Back, when Han and Leah kiss before he's flash frozen. Mmmmmmmmm

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Grinning at Dianna. That's usually the one I get when I'm the most distracted, usually holding a sharp knife in my hand while I'm cooking, or elbows deep in dishwater. The man loves to live dangerously!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Kelley, you're right. I guess there are really 2 first kisses. The absoloute first kiss, with the bumping of noses. Then there is the first kiss after weeks or months of flirting. Mmmmmmmmm The anticipation. Will he? Won't he?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Ah helen, those been married a long time and still have it kisses are so good! Especially when the kids are grown and leaving the house!!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

OOOOOoooo Christy...I forgot that kiss! The I've trapped you and you could probably get away if you really wanted to, but do you REALLY want to escape my kiss, kiss!! OH Baby!!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Jo, I think that possessive, yet protectiveness of the hands to the face kiss is what draws me in, too!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Oh, Ms. Hellion, I forgot about the kiss on the forehead kiss. I have to confess, when I'm crawling into bed and hubby is leaving for work, the sweetest kiss is the one he puts on my cheek when I'm barely awake. Sometimes I think he doesn't realize I'm still slightly conscious, so it makes me feel cherished. :)

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hi Tiffany! I have to confess I don't know exactly where the French Kiss picture came from, other than I googled French kisses. Be careful when you do that... uh...well, some interesting pics pop up!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Fedora! Kids with sticky kisses or big hard hugs usually make me smile for days! Enjoy them while you can.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Tracy G!! Glad you're home safe and sound after the conference. Your hubby lives as dangerously as mine, or maybe not. Mine loves to kiss my neck, shoulders and ears while I'm holding a sharp instrument. But it still gives me shivers all over!!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Jane Graves, welcome back to the Lair!!

Since you brought the subject up of bad kisses, let's talk about the Slobbery kiss. OOOOOOOOo ick! The guy who hasn't learned any technique. yuck, yuck, yuck!!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Beth, I have to agree, that was a great kiss. Bourne might not have know who he was, but he instinctively knew what he was, a protector. And I think she recognized that inherent part of him, too, the first man in her life to do so, and it increased the sexual tension a few notches.

Susan Sey said...

Oh, first kisses. So sweet. So touching. So...awkward. But oh, my, the way your heart pounds.

Unless of course you're in jr high & have been trapped against your locker by some guy who plays the trombone & who is coming at you with his tongue already out & prepared to do battle.

Then it's not so much awkward as simply offensive. Particularly if the kissee has been reading romance novels for several years & has her head filled with all kinds of devastatingly wonderful first kisses. Then the horribleness of the experience is magnified by the distance between reality & expectations.

Got to say, though, boys do get better at such things as the years go by. :-) I don't know anybody who'd willingly do their teen years over again, but as for me, you can have my twenties, too. I like my thirties & have a feeling my forties are going to be even better. :-)

Tawny said...

MMMMMMMmmmmmmm... I just love kisses. Long, short, hot, sweet. Love 'em all!

I think my curent favorite on-screen kiss is a tie between when Elizabeth traps Jack to the wheel of the Black Pearl in Dead Man's Chest or her and Will's final goodbye in At Worlds End.

Or maybe I just want to kiss Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom LOL.

doglady said...

Goodness gracious! Is it hot in here or is it just me?? That's quite a little dissertation you've written on kissing, Suzanne! Wow!

Only one missing is the "doggie" kiss. Hey, the only man in my house weighs twelve pounds, his ears are too big and he has fur! BUT, he does wake me up with a sweet little kiss to my eyelid to wake me up. Of course he does it because he has to go outside to pee, but at least it is nice!

Don't ever discount the value of those quick kisses goodbye after a number of years of marriage. My memory of kissing my husband goodbye when he left for work that awful morning is a fresh as if it happened this morning. It gives me a great deal of comfort.

The kisses that always made me smile were the ones as we were taking our bows after a performance. Whenever I sang with my young baritone friend he would lead me out to take my bow and then kiss my hand. Very continental and he always looked so sexy doing it. He would wink at me and it always made me smile!

And Anna C, I LOVE those almost kisses you mentioned. Sometimes those are sexier than the real thing.

Terri Osburn said...

Love this blog! And I think I'm the only one who hated that upside down kiss. It just did NOTHING for me. LOL!

Love the french kiss. Can't help it. And I'll second that "his hands next to her on the wall but nothing else touching" thing. Mostly because the fact of nothing else touching doesn't last long if it's done right. *wg*

Oh, and here's another that sort of leads back to yesterday's topic. Ask Eloisa about where she came up with the Coney Kiss. LOL! Let's just say, it goes back to where our minds went when Christine asked if it has to be on the mouth. LOL!

V-J Day is the Sailor/Nurse photo op. (Victory over Japan.)

doglady said...

Oh and Congrats on the GR, Jane!!

Kelly Krysten said...

Terri, I also disliked that spiderman upside down kiss.*shrugs* Don't really know why. Just seemed too awkward.

hrdwrkdmom aka Dianna said...

Oh my, the up against the wall. Yeah, that is good one too. I think it would be pretty safe to say I like all of the above....LOL

hrdwrkdmom aka Dianna said...

Susan, It has been many, many years since my teens but I knew a boy that could kiss like a full grown man, he must have started when he was 6 to have that much experience by his teens. I even remember his name, and what he looked like, (had a darn good body for a teenager too)! Okay, it is getting very warm in here, someone turn on the air and you might want to hide the cabana boys for a while.

Anna Campbell said...

Dianna, you woman of mystery with a wicked past, you! ;-) My first kiss was awful - another teenage boy but he had a cold tongue so it was like sucking a dead fish. Ack!

hrdwrkdmom aka Dianna said...

Anna, you would not believe the WV boys, deadly to a female from birth. *EG*

Maria Zannini said...

I'm with Christine.

The kiss on the back of my neck is definitely my all time favorite. The way he sweeps my hair to one side and traces his fingers down my neck. By the time his lips brush my skin, I'm jelly.

Oh darn! I've got to go find the husband now. LOL.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Oh Susan, poor you. Maybe said trombone player learned something from you in that kiss and his wife owes you a major thank you for your forebearance!!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hehehe, would that be a Tawny sandwich then? What a wicked fantasy you have!! And I'm thinking kissing either or both would be monumental.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Oh Pam, that kiss to your husband is so important. Mine climbs all over roofs each day and I try to kiss him every morning before he leaves.

As for doggy kisses, Rocky-the-super-dog, my writing partner has the best, welcome home kisses in the world!

Great post, Suz.
I like the kissing me awake kisses – and no not necessarily for what you’re all thinking- although that’s pretty fabulous too. My husband travels and sometimes he leaves really early in the morning to catch a flight. I’ll be asleep as he’s getting ready to go and he kisses me goodbye/awake right before he leaves for the airport. It’s sortof a combo kiss and yeah, fairly hot. And yes, I hate that he’s leaving home everytime!
