Catherine Spangler returns to the Lair.

Interview by Suzanne

Pull up a chair Banditas and Bandit Buddies! Today, we have a guest who had a blast her last time visiting with us, my good friend, Catherine Spangler. Cathy is not only one of my favorite people and writers, but a big hit with both my daughters, who just gobble up her paranormal romances! So please welcome, Cathy...

Suz: Cathy, TOUCHED BY LIGHT is a continuation of your Atlantean Sentinel series. Can you tell us about the series and how this new book fits into the series?

Cathy: The Sentinel series is about Atlanteans reincarnating into current-day earth. First, the "bad" Atlanteans (Belians who worshipped Belial, made human sacrifices, and caused the destruction of Atlantis) started coming in, attracted by the new technologies. They thrive on chaos, fear, and blood, and many are dictators, drug lords, serial killers, etc. The good Atlanteans (the Sentinels) are now reincarnating to stop the Belians. They track the Belians psychically. They have one edge-human conductors who can amplify their psychic powers. A conductor is always opposite sex of the Sentinel, and the tracking process (a conduction) raises sexual energies. There are currently three Sentinel books: Touched by Darkness, Touched by Fire, and Touched by Light. Each is stand alone, but they're also linked.

Suz: Adam Masters isn't a typical Sentinel. How does his bonding with Julia change the Sanctioned dynamics? How does his bonding with Julia change the Sentinel-Conductor relationship?

Cathy: Adam is actually a Sanctioned, and more powerful than a Sentinel. His job is to oversee the Sentinels and conductors in his region (Texas). He's not supposed to have a matched conductor or perform conductions, yet when he meets Julia Reynolds, he quickly realizes she is indeed a matched conductor for him-which is unheard of. When he's put in a position of tracking one of his own Sentinels (something he would never ask his other Sentinels to do), then he also realizes that he and Julia are supposed to be together. It doesn't really change the Sentinel/conductor relationship, but it does create big upheavals for Adam.

Suz: Julia Reynolds is no simpering miss to be used by Adam as he pleases. How did she get that way? And how does she change during her relationship with Adam?

Cathy: Julia has never fully recovered from a horrendous attack twelve years ago, when she was stalked, brutally beaten and raped, and left for dead. Her leg was shattered, and she must use a cane to get around. She's buried herself in a brilliant teaching career, seeking refuge in order and discipline and control in her life. She doesn't want Adam messing up her haven, and she certainly doesn't want a relationship with any man, much less Adam. He's like a god, far beyond a plain woman like herself. But as she works with Adam to track the missing Sentinel, she finds herself attracted to him, and realizes she's no longer dead inside and can still experience sexual desire. When she almost dies during their tracking, she decides to throw caution to the wind and enjoy a relationship with Adam-even if it's only temporary.

Suz: The Belians are the dark forces in you paranormal world. Are the Sentinels going to best them or are they too strong?

Cathy: The Belians are basically as powerful as the Sentinels. It could go either way, and sometimes the Belians win. As I've already mentioned, the Sentinels have an edge with their conductors (there are none for the Belians), but there are no guarantees.
Suz: Miriam is an interesting secondary character. How is she involved in the story?

Cathy: I love Miriam. Underneath the Goth makeup, multi-colored hair, and multiple earrings, Miriam is basically conservative and extremely intelligent. She also comes from a Gypsy heritage and has psychometric abilities, and can read auras and Tarot cards. She becomes involved because she's one of Julia's students, and when she sees Julia and Adam together, she checks Adam's aura (which isn't normal) and gets a read from money he gives her. She knows something dark and sinister is going on, and believes she's being guided to help in some way. So she follows Adam and Julia to San Antonio, and ends up helping them in their search for a missing Sentinel and a dangerous Belian.

Suz: You usually write paranormal books. Are their more of the Sentinel series or can we expect something different in your future?

Cathy: Right now, all my story ideas are paranormal. I love those elements so much, it's basically impossible to keep them out of my books. Currently, there are no more Sentinel books planned, partly because of the downswing in the publishing industry. I am working on a new paranormal series about angels, and dusting off my "Silly Aliens" series (you can read sample chapters from Cowboys and Aliens on my website at http://www.catherinespangler.com/fun.htm).

I also want to tell you about the fun "Mr. Right Sentinel" quiz I have on my website. You can take the quiz and determine which of the three ultra-sexy Sentinels is your perfect match (okay, so Adam is a Sanctioned, but he's included in the quiz). You can find the quiz at http://www.catherinespangler.com/fun_quiz.htm. And if you do take it, I hope you'll comment on the blog and share your match. It will be interesting to see which Sentinel is the most popular.
Are you getting tired of the most written paranormal themes (vampires, werewolves, etc.)? What would you like to see in future paranormal trends (angels, demons, magic, etc.)?Do you think we might get some good discussion with those questions? We can let readers know that they can chime in on the questions or take the quiz and give their results, and either way, they'll be entered into the drawing for the book. I'm giving away a copy of Touched by Light today, so jump in for a chance to win.
Thank you so much for letting me hang out here today. The Bandits are ultra cool! .

Congrats Pissenlit you two are going to have fun I am sure

Great interview Ladies and these books sound really good I only started reading paranormals about a year ago and although I haven't read a lot of them I have loved the ones that I have read and of course am always on the look out for great books. These have been added to my must get list.

Something that I really love about the paranormals I have read is the often different world they are set in and I always enjoy learning about their past and their worlds very interesting reading for me

Have Fun
Helen

Ya know, the one "bad" thing about hanging around here is that my TBR list just keeps getting longer and longer with no end in sight. :D

I took the quiz and had exactly the same number of answers for 1&3 so it looks like I've got two Mr. Rights, Luke Paxton AND Adam Masters. Sounds good to me!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Congrats on snagging the Golden Rooster, Pissenlit!

Y'all were quick this morning, I hadn't finished the blog at home, and dang if patients didn't come in to have their babies before I could. So check out the bottom, Cathy had some great questions for y'all!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Helen!

That's one of the things I like about paranormals, too. A different world with less limitations than ours! Cathy does a great job with her Sentinels.

LOL. I'm apparently a straight Luke Paxton girl!

Helen said...

Catherine

I have just done the quizz and I have equal numbers of 1 & 2 so I guess I get to choose either Luke or Damien lucky me.

The paranormals I have read have mainly been shape shifters as in werewolves and dragons and some magic mixed in and I really loved them I have only read one vampire based book and that was Nalini Singh's Angels' Blood and I did enjoy that.
I do enjoy the shapeshifters love them.

Pissenlit I totally agree with you my TBR pile has grown so much thanks very much to the Bandits I love it LOL

Have Fun
Helen

Suz

Must have been wonderful delivering those babies

Pissenlit said...

Are you getting tired of the most written paranormal themes (vampires, werewolves, etc.)?

Wellll...yes and no. It sort of depends on the story. I just started Georgia Evans' Bloody Good and from what I can tell, it's set in a fictional English town during WWII and yes, it's got vampires. So far, I've come across some German undercover agent vampires who have infiltrated the town, posing as English humans. They parachuted in(sans parachutes). :D

What would you like to see in future paranormal trends (angels, demons, magic, etc.)?

I could do with some more of the fae. Like a whole lot of different types of fae. And I'm also partial to stories with Greek mythology. Does that count as paranormal?

Do you think we might get some good discussion with those questions?

Yes? :D

Lynz Pickles said...

Congrats, Pissenlit. And great interview, Suzanne and Cathy.

I got mainly 2's, so my Mr. Right is Damien Morgan. And I bet that once I start reading this series, I'll be thrilled about that result. Great, my TBR pile just grew, again. Curses, banditas and friends, you're robbing me of all my spare time! Not that I mind, since I keep reading great books thanks to you, but still.

I am thoroughly sick of vampires in paranormal lit, though I'll admit that part of the reason is thanks to Twilight. After having to listen to person after person tell me about how sexy Edward and the other vampires are, I don't want to hear or read about vamps anymore. I don't mind werewolves yet, but I've been reading a lot of Nocturne Bites of late am starting to get a tad bored with them, too. One thing I'd like to see more of, and that I have seen a bit of lately, is the light vs. dark, angels vs. demons theme. When done right, it's a lot of fun. I'd also love to see more Lori Devoti-type romances - I love the way she combines all sorts of different races. Oh, and Greek mythology is ALWAYS welcome.

Also, a few years back I read Golden, a YA book featuring various supernatural talents, but I was especially fond of the way the author used auras. I'd like to see more about them - just another reason why your series is on my TBR list now, Cathy!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Lynz Pickles, I think you'll like Cathy's Sentinel books. Not a vamp in sight!

Also, I've loved Kay Hooper's psychic FBI team's books. Keeps me turning pages.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Oooooooooo Pisenlit...Vamps in WWII? I'm thinking something I'd love to read, too.

Gillian Layne said...

Catherine, these books sound wonderful! I'm so happy when writers put together linked books that can stand alone, as I'm usually reading them out of order.

A well built world keeps my attention, and I am captivated by the thought of a conservative Goth. Neat!

And no, there are no paranormals I am tired of. I loved vamps and werewolves when I was ten, and I'll be wanting to read about them when I'm ninety. There are so many great versions out there! :)

hrdwrkdmom aka Dianna said...

I am not tired of any of the paranormals but I do love the sound of the Sentinels. My TBR is a great lumbering monster but I am sure I can get some more on there.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Morning, Gillian!

The uniqueness of the paranormal worlds is like a character in each book itself, isn't it? It's only limits is the writer's imagination, so the possibilities are endless.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Diana!

Wouldn't your TBR make a great character in a paranormal? It could lumber through the house, like Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, only instead of "Feed me!" the TBR would demand, "Read me!"

Joan said...

Welcome back, Catherine!

The Sentinels sound like my kind of heroes.

I am in NO way tired of paranormals! In fact I'm not tired of any particular sub-genre of romance. A good story is a good story.

That said, I wouldn't mind new and different either. Different takes on myths, different historical settings. Variety is, as they say, the spice of life :-)

housemouse88 said...

Hello Catherine,

I'd like to see more magic in paranormals. Don't get me wrong I still want my vamps and weres. I just would like to see some variety in the settings, maybe a historical like "Royal Blood". Have a great day.

Nancy said...

Pissenlit, congrats on taking home the GR!

Catherine, welcome back! These books sound wonderful, but that's no surprise. Your first, Shielder, is still on my keeper shelf.

As for the questions, I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I never was a huge fan of vampire heroes, so I tired of them very quickly. I do sometimes feel, when I'm reading blurbs in a bookstore, that they all run together because there are so MANY similarities, especially with vampires. I'm always on the lookout for something new and different, which is one of the things that drew me to your work in the first place.

As a longtime fantasy reader, I'm glad to see magic coming into the market, and I've seen some innovative uses of Greek mythology.

I'm also happy with made-up legends, such as fantasy authors use all the time. Prophecies, codexes (codices?), ancient scrolls--they're all fine with me as long as the author lays the groundwork.

Suz, thanks for hosting Catherine. It's a fun interview to read.

Nancy said...

Another fab interview, Suz!

I'm an Adam woman (according to the quiz), but I adore the whole series. No need to enter me, 'cause I devour these books!

Catherine, you write with such intensity and emotion, and yet that balancing touch of humor. I'm sure hoping for more books in this series!

Light,
Nancy Haddock

Susan Sey said...

Good morning, Catherine & Suz! What a great concept for a series, Catherine! I love 'lost world' sort of books, & have a feeling I'll really enjoy the Atlanteans.

AS for paranormals I'd like to see more or less of, would I be shot if I confessed to having never liked the whole vampire thing? The drinking blood business is, to me, so completely unsexy it throws me out of the book.

I mean, on an intellectual level, I get that it's about a deeper level of intimacy than plain old sex, and the raised stakes (life, death, immortality, etc.) are supposed to inhance the sexual experience.

But I just can't get into it. The blood thing puts me OFF.

So I'm all for angels & demons & magic & faeries. Bring 'em on.

Minna said...

Are you getting tired of the most written paranormal themes (vampires, werewolves, etc.)?

OMG! I just logged on and saw all these comments. Suz warned me y'all were early to respond. So now I have all these posts (love it!) I'll try to respond in "batches"--LOL.

Pissenlit, congrats on getting the Golden Rooster award! What does that entail, exactly. So, you want BOTH Luke Paxton AND Adam Master? You hussey, you!

Hi Helen, so glad you've come over to the dark-er, I mean paranormal-side! I'm like you-I love to read about different worlds.

Suz, as always, thank you for your kind words about my books. I'm with you on Luke Paxton. He's my kind of guy.

Catherine Spangler said...

It's only a little after 10:00 am here, and I'm already winded from all these posts!

I'm SHOCKED to learn we have another hussy here-Helen, who likes both Luke and Damien. You go, girl!

Pissenant, I really like magic, too. I think there would be a place for more fae in today's market.

Lynz-Damien is *very* sexy. I think you'll like his story (Touched by Darkness). I also agree with you that some readers are getting tired of vamps. Demons and angels appear to be the newest trend.

Suz, I *love* the Kay Hooper FBI paranormal books. She's amazing.

The Scarf Princess said...

Well, that was a fun quiz. And according to it, Luke Paxton is my man. So, when will I be able to claim him?

Catherine Spangler said...

I'm baaack!

Hi Gillian. I love to read series, too, but I really want each book to be stand alone. It's really frustrating to be left hanging and have to wait for the next book.

Hi Diana, thanks for checking in. Try not to get buried under that TBR pile!

Suz, re the TBR horror story idea: I think maybe you haven't had enough sleep-LOL.

Hi Joan, I agree 100% about continuing to read all kinds of paranormals if they're well written. A good story is a good story!

Catherine Spangler said...

Hi Housemouse! It's good to "see" you again. I'm with you -- I'd like to see more different types of paranormals. We're very creative beings, and very capable of coming up with new themes.

Hi Nancy No. 1! I'm delighted you liked the Sheilder series, and touched that Shielder is on your keeper shelf. You also sound like a magic/fantasy fan. I think that urban fantasies (with strong romantic elements) are definitely on the rise.

Hi Nancy Haddock! Thanks for checking in. Everyone, you need to check out Nancy's wonderful Vamp books: La Vida Vampire and Last Vampire Standing. Talk about a new slant! Her heroine vamp lives in Florida and gives ghost tours and is attracted to a very sexy demon/vampire slayer. Great books.

Catherine Spangler said...

Hi Susan. Thanks for checking in. Very interesting about vampires and blood and how it's a turnoff for you. I'm sure you're not alone. The good thing is that there are lots of other wonderful paranormal books out there.

Hello Minna, thanks for sharing that impressive list of books. My own TBR pile is starting to grow even more . . .

Hi Joder! You have very good taste in men :-) But no, you can NOT claim Luke Paxton. He's all mine!

jo robertson said...

Hi, Cathy, welcome to the Lair! Your books sound exciting and I can't wait to add them to by TBR list.

I never tire of vampire and werewolf stories. I know they seem to be overdone, but if well-written, they're superb!

Congrats on the rooster, Pissenlit!

Catherine Spangler said...

Hi Jo! It does seem that most readers aren't tiring of vampires and werewolves. Actually, there aren't that many different plots out there, so the key is to put new twists on the existing plots. I love it when an author comes up with a new and cool concept for an old theme.

catslady said...

I just have to say you have some of the most gorgeous covers!!!

Becke Davis said...

Oh, I like the sound of this series! I'll have to check these out.

Catherine Spangler said...

Hi Catslady/1 Yes, I do have some great covers (especially if you like ultra-sexy men on them!).

Hi Treethyme! Thanks for dropping in and checking out the series.

Donna MacMeans said...

Congrats Pissenlit!

Welcome to the lair Catherine, your sentinels sound yummy! Although most of my books are straight historical, I love to judge - and occasionally write - paranormal because the boundaries are limitless. I've read some great non-traditional paranormal contest entries that I hope to see on a bookshelf someday. The Atlantis series sounds great.

Loucinda McGary aka Aunty Cindy said...

Welcome back to the Lair, Cathy!

And Suz, thanx a bunch for bringing her back and doing another GREAT interview!

I'll admit that I am "so over" vampires. :-P I'm not squeamish, but like Smoov, I never have found all that blood sucking to be a turn on. Now great villains, YES! Heroes... not so much.

As one who loves to include a bit of the paranormal in her books, I hope there's no end in sight for the sub-genre. As someone else said, a good story is what I'm looking for, and Cathy, yours sound FAB!

While my TBR pile might not rival Dianna's, it is intimidating!

Anna Campbell said...

Hey, Pissenlit! Has he visited you before? And you only just beat Helen - that means you're super fast on your pins, my friend ;-) I hope he behaves for you!

Catherine, welcome back to the lair! Suz, that's a great interview. Wow, I had trouble concentrating on the text. My eyes kept being drawn to the covers. What? Me? Shallow????!!! Those should leap off the shelves!

I got Mr. Right Sentinel is Damien Morgan. My scores where 4 each of 1 and 3 and 5 2's lol so all of them would be close matches I think.

Caffey said...

Hi Catherine!! So thrilled with the new book out in the series! This series is nothing like I've ever read before! I love paranormals and glad you'll continue doing them, including angels!!

That quiz was fun! Mine is Your Mr. Right Sentinel is Adam Masters!
Now I'm even excited about his book!
Great to see you! And will you be having a blog so you can keep us readers updated on your news?

Catherine Spangler said...

Well, I spent about fifteen minutes, answering the last three comments, and then something happened and it didn't publish. I might need some wine and chocolate at this point :-)

Hi Donna! I can understand a preference for reading a certain genre, as I'm that way myself. It's very interesting, though, because I do read and like genres that I have no desire to write (historical, staight contemporary, for example). Although I do read a lot of paranomal books.

Hi Aunt Cindy! Like you, I do get tired of reading the same things over and over. I love it when an author does something fresh and original. I think paranormal elements will be here for a long time. Expert predictions say the paranormal market is still going strong.

Hi Anna! Yes, I definitely had the cover fairies for the Sentinel books. I don't think the cover for Touched by Darkness is posted on the blog, and it's probably my favorite. You can see it at: http://www.catherinespangler.com/sentinel.htm

Catherine Spangler said...

Hi Chekru. I'm glad you took the quiz. Damien is very cool and his story is in Touched by Darkness. I'm not suprised you had close scores for all of them, because all three are ultra-sexy hunks :-)

Catherine Spangler said...

Hi Caffey. Thank you so much for your kind words about the Sentinel Series. Adam is a very cool guy, and I know you'll be very happy together--LOL.

I know I need to have a blog, but I'm so busy and so disorganized, it's really hard for me to keep one up. I actually have one at blogspot, and I need to dust it off and give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Happy Friday to all!

OOOOOOoooo another idea for a paranormal...Gladiators who fight for different gods or goddesses? NOpe? Well, y'all now know why I don't write much paranormal or sci-fi stuff!

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey housemouse!!

So, magic in paranormals, huh? Like witches or wizards or ohhhhhh mages or faeries?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Nancy!

I crawled out of bed and blogger was down. POUT... I am not surprised in the least that YOU have Cathy's SHIELDER book on your keep shelf! Somehow as one of the Lair's resident Sci-fi fans I'd imagine your entire keeper shelf is both unique and ecclectic. :)

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Hey Nancy Haddock!

Always good to see you pop into the Lair to say Hey!

Have you ever noticed that when you know someone, like Cathy, you can hear them in their books? Especially the humor parts?

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Susan, I'm all into you with the blood drinking part of the vamp books...not really into it. It seems Sherrilyn's Dark Hunter series is unique as that doesn't happen by the good guys. Also JR Ward's books are so about the relationships of the heros/heroines and the brotherhood, that I don't really notice the blood drinking much. So for me, those are books I'll read as long as they write them.

Suzanne Ferrell said...

Joder, apparently you'll have to fight me for Luke!

I have been MIA for a while and I was doing my best to get the tbr under control but that isn't going to happen in this lifetime Catherine, and then there are authors like you that come to visit and there you go, another series or three on the tbr pile! I get intrigued by the little bits and pieces that are let out in the interviews and then I just gotta have them. ===sigh=== I have no control, none.

CATHERINE SPANGLER said...

I just realized that the first Nancy is Nancy Northcut. Nancy! How in the world are you? What are you writing now?

Nancy said...

Why, Suz, thanks for the kind words! I do have very eclectic tastes. I'm also a sucker for telepathy, which is what drew me to Shielder.

These Sentinels sound fabulous, too, though.

CATHERINE SPANGLER said...

Dianna,

I have no control, either. I hear or read about a new book or series, and then I have to have it. While we're discussing new series, I highly recommend Nalini Singh's new Guild Hunter series. The first book is Angel's Blood, and it blew me away. It does have vampires in it, but they're not the focus of the story--the angels, particulary the archangels are the focus. Dark, but very good.

CATHERINE SPANGLER said...

Suz,

Has anyone ever told you you're a nut? (I'm sure they have--lol). Okay, so we'll have mutant TBR piles. But you can't fight anyone over Luke, because *I* have him!

Nancy said...

Hi, Catherine--Your not catching my name makes me feel better about totally missing the fact that one of my friends was in a group blog I visited! I suspected you hadn't made the connection, but I wasn't going to nudge you. :-)

I'm writing various and sundry, sort of catering to my eclectic reading taste. I just started a book I think will be paranormal romance but might turn itself into urban fantasy and am having a lot of fun with it. I hope we can catch up in DC.

I do love the thought of my TBR pile growing I am with you Dianna I can never have too many books I only wished I could retire so as I have more time to read LOL

Have Fun

Nancy,

I'm so glad you're having fun with your writing. Writing is difficult enough without becoming a "chore".

Unfortunately, I won't be in DC this year. Never enough time and money. And we never did get together in Dallas, which was my fault. Okay--next conference we both attend, we *will* have that drink and a long visit!

Coming in late after finally taking the quiz--Damien sounds like the right match for me ;) As for paranormals, I'm still relatively new to reading them, so they're all pretty interesting to me!
