Songs for Submissions

by Donna MacMeans

Do you remember the TV show Ally McBeal? I used to love that show. Ally was an attorney that worked with an ecletric Boston law firm. You might recall one of the threads dealt with personal theme songs. Ally had several. The Peter MacNicol character (Cage) channeled songs & dance routines to boost his self confidence.

In San Francisco I attended a motivational workshop which suggested everyone should have their own personal theme song to sing to themselves when a motivational push is needed. Facing a scary job interview? Sing to yourself first (grin). Of course it has to be a motivational inspirational sort of song.

Do you have a personal theme song?

Mine is Defying Gravity from Wicked. This is the showstopper, you know, the one they toss in right before intermission - the one that keeps playing in your head as you head out for souvenir CDs. Any way, here's a part of the lyrics:

Something has changed within me.
Something is not the same.
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone elses game.
Too late for second-guessing.
Too late to go back to sleep!
It's time to trust my instincts.
Close my eyes, and leap!
It's time to trust my instincts.
Close my eyes, and leap!
It's time to try defying gravity.
I think I'll try defying gravity, and you can't pull me down!

If you're unfamiliar with the song, try this link: http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/wicked/defyinggravity.htm

(I couldn't imbed the youtube version, but they do the full song on the clip on the website.)

Now personally, I think this is great music for mailing submissions. I have it on my ipod and play it when things aren't going great - it always pumps me back up.

I had this song playing in my head when I wrote THE TROUBLE WITH MOONLIGHT so it's only appropriate that a copy is the prize for today.

Do you have a theme song? There's some great ones out there. Does it help when times are tough? Anyone have accompanying dance moves? (I do mine while walking the dog at night)

Woot! My payoff for helping my neighbor wipe away her crappy week with margaritas and falling asleep (*not* passing out!) at 9pm. Okay, big guy. Looks like we need to come up with a theme song. Know any good ones?

I have a couple of theme songs for my life. (Singers usually do!) One of my all time favorites is IN MY OWN LITTLE CORNER from Cinderella by Rodgers and Hammerstein

Cinderella:

I'm as mild and as meek as a mouse
When I hear a command I obey.
But I know of a spot in my house
Where no one can stand in my way.

In my own little corner in my own little chair
I can be whatever I want to be.
On the wings of my fancy I can fly anywhere
And the world will open its arms to me.

I'm a young Norwegian princess or a milkmaid
I'm the greatest prima donna in Milan
I'm an heiress who has always had her silk made
By her own flock of silkworms in Japan

I'm a girl men go mad for love's a game I can play with
Cool and confident kind of air.
Just as long as I stay in my own little corner
All alone in my own little chair.

I can be whatever I want to be.

I'm a slave from Calcutta I'm a queen in Peru.
I'm a mermaid dancing upon the sea
I'm a huntress on an African safari.. i
It's a dangerous type of sport and yet it's fun

In the night I sally forth to seek my quarry
And I find I forgot to bring my gun.
I am lost in the jungle all alone and unarmed
When I meet a lioness in her lair

Then I'm glad to be back in my own little corner,
All alone in my own little chair.

This is how I feel about my writing and about reading romance. It takes me wherever I want to be - over and over again.

Well done PJ Louisa pipped by 2 mins have fun with him

Great post Donna not sure whether I have a theme song but I love music and depending on what is going on at the time a song often comes into my head and I start humming or sing the song one that comes to me often when things get tough I can't even remember the name I think it is from the movie Romancing The Stone When The Going Gets Tough The Tough Get Going and this really helps me with a challenge.

I am sure we are going to hear about some wonderful songs and most of them will bring back memories for a lot of people and also inspire many of us.

I love the words to Defying Gravity Donna they really are inspiring I love it

Have Fun

Great topic, Donna. I don't really have a theme song, but a song that always perks me up and makes me smile is an old Frank Sintra fune called "High Hopes." The beginning lyrics are:

"Just what makes that little old ant
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can’t
Move a rubber tree plant

But he’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your gettin’ low
’stead of lettin’ go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant

And PJ, yahoooooo on capturing the rooster. It'll be interesting to see what theme song the GR comes up with!

Donna MacMeans said...

Congratulations to PJ. I'm sure you'll be hearing the GR's theme song about 5:00 AM.

If so,your theme song may be:

I will survive (or maybe that will be his theme song as you chase him with a pot.)

Donna MacMeans said...

Louisa - I remember that song! I never thought of it as a theme song but reading the lyrics I can see it could be.

My family would definitely see the relationship of those lyrics to writing. All week they've been looking at my vacant stare and asking "what's wrong?" My reply? Nothing, I'm just living in my story. In my own little corner, in my own little chair...

Donna MacMeans said...

Hi Helen! -- Did Romancing the Stone have songs? I'll have to rewatch it. When the going gets tough sounds like it might come from South Pacific - that one had some great songs.

Donna MacMeans said...

Hi Jo - Didn't Jimminy Cricket sing that in Pinnochio as well? I always get a mental image of a cricket when I hear that song - though I much prefer the image of Frank Sinatra (grin). High Hopes definitely qualifies for a submission song.

Fedora said...

Awesome, Donna! I'm not sure I have a theme song, but at our house we do have a tendency to play certain songs/albums repeatedly until the music and/or lyrics are permanently etched into our brains... For a while it was the two Vonda Shepard CDs of music from Ally McBeal (I stopped watching the show after a while, but loved the music), Laurie Berkner's Under a Shady Tree, and since we just got back from Disneyland, right now it's a selection of songs from Aladdin (A Whole New World, You Ain't Never Had a Friend Like Me...) and Toy Story's You've Got a Friend in Me...

Congrats on the GR, PJ!!

Great post, Donna. I love 'pump me up' songs - it's the best way to get through the ups and especially downs of this business.

At the moment, the song which keeps running through my mind is "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. It was the last song I heard at the Harlequin party in SF and has stuck with me ever since.

Is there a message in that, I wonder?!

Anna Sugden said...

Jo - I love High Hopes!

Jane said...

Wtg, PJ.

I don't have a personal theme, although U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "One" move me every time I hear them. These songs aren't religious, but they speak about spirituality. I think "One" speaks about humanity and about everybody loving one another as brothers.

One:
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come tor raise the dead
Havew you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
We hurt each other
Then we do it again

You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should

One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers

One life
But we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other

Sad to say, I cannot think of a song that would fit for me these days. Will have to give it more thought...

Jo, I love the song "High Hopes". It always makes me feel good. A lot of other people liked it too. It won the Oscar for best original song in 1960 (for the Frank Sinatra movie "A Hole in the Head").

Donna MacMeans said...

Fichen1 - The Vonda Shepard episodes were really good. How cool to have a bar where they let the patrons have the mike (grin). Towards the end the shows got a bit goofy and the ratings plummeted, but when it was introduced it was fresh and original.

I love the Aladdin songs. Disney knows the formula for inspirational music and voices. And you can't go wrong with songs about friendship in a family.

THere was one Disney song that I thought was inspirational, but I can't think of the name. I think it was from Mulan - the Asian girl warrior movie. Hmmm...have to see if I can find it.

Buffie said...

Way to go PJ!!! Glad to hear that you didn't pass out!

Jane -- I just love U2!! Their songs are very inspiring.

Personally, I don't think I have a "theme song". There are just so many songs that I love to listen too. I usually get on a kick and listen to a CD for a couple weeks straight, then move on to another one.

Donna MacMeans said...

Hi Anna! DON'T STOP BELIEVING is a great one. And you can't, you know. You can't let go - especially one like you with so much talent. I hope you keep that song playing in your head.

Donna MacMeans said...

Jane - U2 has such a spiritual, other-wordly song to their music they would be a good band to turn to for inspirational songs. I'm not familiar with ONE but those are great lyrics. Thanks for sharing those. I love I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR (it's so hard to type that without hearing it in my head *g*)

Donna MacMeans said...

PJ - I think I've seen all those old Frank Sinatra movies. High Hopes is a classic - that's for sure.

Donna MacMeans said...

Buffie - I thought you'd go for "IT'S RAINING MEN"

Not sure it counhts as a theme song, but it'll get me out on the dance floor (but then most music will *g* - can't help it - ask the folks along my dog walking route)

Joan said...

Do I have a theme song?

DO I HAVE A THEME SONG?????

Well, yes. As a matter of fact I do.

This song sung by Lee Ann Womack is the pivotal song that opened up the writer in me. That sparked the determination in me to pursue my dream of publication. It is both comfort and banner for me, the torch that keeps me on the track to victory and the attainment of my goals.... Every. Last. One.

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....I hope you dance.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance,
Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin',
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin',
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin' out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.

The PRO Retreat speaker at the RWA conference also said you have to have a theme song. Since then, I've tried to figure out what mine could be, but haven't come up with any single "me" song yet. I guess I still haven't figured "me" out enough to pin things down to one song.

And I'm back from my trip to Charleston and Savannah -- stop by my blog for some commentary and pictures.

I have this song when I am feeling down and my world seem to be crumbling. It is from the Legally Blonde soundtrack, it is called Watch Me Shine by Joanna Pacini. I have to say I have never heard of that singer again after the movie though.

When I am under stress, I like to hear The Final Countdown by Europe... just get things moving and it is a really rythmic song (My mom used to love it when she was younger and once made me listen to it, and I was hooked!)

jo robertson said...

Thanks, PJ, for telling us where "High Hopes" came from. I was gonna put a call out for it. I'm far too young, of course, to remember the actual award (VBG), but I didn't know that the song was from "A Hole in the Head."

Me, too, Anna S. It's so peppy and always makes me laugh!

Joanie, I love that "I Hope You Dance" song and it fits YOU to a tee!

Susan Sey said...

Hey, Donna, this is a great question! I will always think of that guy from Ally McBeal channeling Barry White in the co-ed bathroom while his co-workers joined in with the dance moves. Why doesn't that happen in real life??

As for me, I'm still searching for my particular theme song. I haven't settled on one yet--I'm choosy--but I will confess to a fondness for Pat Benetar's We Belong. I mean, come on. How can you resist that chorus?

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or confess
For worse or for better
We belong
We belong
We belong together...

Now picture me dropping a stack of submissions into the mailbox. :-)

Susan Sey said...

p.s. I agree with JoMama--I Hope You Can fits Joanie to a T! Sing it, sister, & keep subbing!

Elyssa Papa said...

Great blog, Donna!

I would have to say that my theme song is Singing in the Rain. And any time it rains, the urge to grab an umberlla and tap dance seizes me. LOL.

...I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin',
Singin' in the rain

Another song I love to sing is Without You, a song from the musical My Fair Lady (one of my fave musicals). It's more of a song for those moments when you need to remind yourself that life goes on and you can ignore the critics or a man when he behaves stoopid. *g*

What a fool I was, what dominated fool,
to think that you were the earth and the sky,
What a fool I was, What an elevated fool,
What a mutton-headed dote was I!
No, my reverberated friend,
you are not the beginning and the end.

There'll be spring every year without you. England still will be here without you.
There'll be fruit on the tree.
And a shore by the sea.
There'll be crumpets and tea without you.

Art and music will thrive without you. Somehow Keats will survive without you.
And there still will be rain on that plain down in Spain,
even that will remain without you.
I can do without you.

You, dear friend, who taught so well,
You can go to Hartford, Hereford and Hampshire.

They can still rule with land without you.
Windsor Castle will stand without you.
And without much ado we can all muddle through without you.

Without pulling it the tide comes in,
without your twirling it the Earth can spin,
Without your pulling it, the tide comes in
Without your twirling it, the earth can spin
Without your pushing them, the clouds roll by,
If they can do without you, ducky, so can I
I shall not feel alone without you
I can stand on my own without you
So go back in your shell
I can do bloody well
Without you.

Well, Duh, I should have read the original post more carefully about where you got the theme song idea. Too busy trying to figure out what to do first, the downside to coming home from travel.

We were only in Savannah overnight; hubby had a meeting in Charleston, and since we've got an anniversary this weekend, he suggested we split the return trip instead of driving all the way back in a day. So, we arrived mid-afternoon and left the next morning. Weather wasn't good for a lot of walkabouts.

and can't get through the mountain of sorrows
fear moves along the darkness
it feels as though the day wouldn't come
and then like a breath of morning breeze
something fills this small room
it finally wakes me up

hunger for life attacs from the foot of the bed
doesn't save it's strength
pulls me up
hunger for life sits on my sholder
tells me to already to leave from here
encourages to go forward
encourages to go forward..."

Donna -- LOL on the ITS RAINING MEN song!!!

I really love Michael Buble's version of FEVER. Now THAT is one fine, sexy song!!!

When I am having a great day and feel on top of the world, I love to listen to Tina Turner's THE BEST. Love those lyrics:

You're simply the best
Better than all the rest
Better than anyone
Anyone I ever had

Also, when I am in a sassy mood (which can be quite often I confess) I also love Tina's YOU BETTER BE GOOD TO ME. Oh man, when that comes on, I have to grab my high heels and do my best Tina impression. The dh just shakes his head at me. LOL!

For a pick me up, I love to hear Gloria Estefan's COMING OUT OF THE DARK. Beautiful song!

Hi all!

Donna, the song I bet you're thinking of from Mulan is Reflections.

Here are the words:

Look at me
You may think you see who I really am
But you'll never know me
Ev'ry day
It's as if I play a part
Now I see
If I wear a mask
I can fool the world
But I cannot fool my heart

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

I am now
In a world where I have to hide my heart
And what I believe in
But somehow
I will show the world
What's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know?
Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

There's a heart that must be free to fly
That burns with a need to know the reason why
Why must we all conceal
What we think
How we feel
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?

I won't pretend that I'm
Someone else
For all time
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

Joan - I LOVE THAT SONG - It's the one I used to sing to my daughter. Keeping the wonder of life is so important and that song does it perfectly. Thanks for bringing that one to mind.

Margay - Maybe the Wolmack song will work for you.

Donna MacMeans said...

Terry - I wonder if the speaker at the PRO Retreat was the same as at the PAN Retreat? Was she the lady that spoke about being between Trapezes? If so - it's the same...hence the same theme song message. If not - Hey - we're on to something. Gotta get that theme song going!

Donna MacMeans said...

Terry - The last (and only) time I was in Savannah we got caught in a rain storm of such fierce intensity, cars were flooding out in the intersections near the River walk area. That's where I found my ceramic corset that reminded me of Mrs. Brimley's cover. It was so - destiny, you know? I'd love to go back.

PJ - would love to do the ghost tour as well. I've done one in New Orleans. I bet Savannah would have lots of secrets as well.

Donna MacMeans said...

Natalie - That's another song I don't think I've heard, but I like the sound of the title. I think we have the DVD of Legally Blonde, I'll have to check it out.

Donna MacMeans said...

Lily - Stress...STRESS! That would be me right now *g*. Can only last for this next week, though. I'm going to need this song. I'm on it.

Donna MacMeans said...

Susan - Pat Benetar had some great ones. I like the We Belong song. I hadn't thought about it in terms of a theme song - but it works.

Yeah, those Barry White moves were fun. Unfortunately, I always seemed to relate to the song of the needle scratching across the record when someone would interrupt *g*.

Donna MacMeans said...

Elyssa -

I LOVE the singing in the rain song - definitely makes you want to dance. Do you remember an episode from Friends when Ross was dancing in the rain to that music? Gene Kelley in the movie scene is such a classic.

I'm channeling My Fair Lady with my current WIP. In my mind, my heroine resembles the very posh version of Eliza. How fun that you should mention that song.

Christie Kelley said...

Great post, Donna. Now you have thinking...I don't have a theme song. Hmm, my edits are done so I guess I'll have to come up with one soon.

Donna MacMeans said...

Minna - Thanks for the youtube clip for the music and the lyrics translations. This is a great theme song. I love the refrain cause sometimes you need something to encourage you to go forward. Wonderful choice.

Donna MacMeans said...

Susan - LOL I've been doing that a lot lately as well. I went to reply to Joan and typed in Jaon. Fingers and eyesight are out of sync. Dear Heaven - I'm afraid to start editing these last pages *g*

Donna MacMeans said...

Buffie - I love Michael Buble. His song EVERYTHING is one I crank up loud, and sing at the top of my voice. The lyrics are good, but it's the way he sings it that lifts me up. I love his HOME song - it was the best part of that awful movie - can't think of the name. FEVER is HOT! No doubt about it. Hmmm...think I need me some Buble on the ipod.

Tina Turner is a great motivator. Such power in her voice. I don't undertand doing Tina Impressions.

I think one of these years we should have a bandita party with a band & a dancefloor and lots of alcohol. You & I can strut our stuff in high heels *g*

Donna MacMeans said...

PJ - Haven't heard from Fo, but I'm afraid I've been bad this last week monitoring the loop. Between the marathon rush to finish this book (which I'm loving BTW) and disrupted internet service (my husband decided to switch providers), I'm grossly behind - but I think that news I would have heard. Crossing fingers for her.

Donna MacMeans said...

Minna -

LOL - Good choice on the Monty Python song - ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIGHT - That's one that gets in your head and refuses to leave - but it's a good reminder.

Donna MacMeans said...

That's it Gillian - Reflections. Don't you love the voices they find to sing those songs & they're perfect for those angsty teenage years. Thanks for finding it.

Donna MacMeans said...

Okay - WHat's the story behind COMING OUT OF THE DARK? I'm guessing it's connected with that car crash??

Donna MacMeans said...

Christie - You're done with your edits already? Congratulations! Obviously it was lots of little things & nothing major - the mark of a pro. See - you're already Defying Gravity!

Buffie said...

Donna, in 1990 a semi truck that was speeding crashed into Gloria's tour bus. Her back was severely injured. She ended up having two rods put in her back to stablize the spinal column, and had about a year of rehab. The song is basically about the support her husband provided to her in those dark hours.

Here are the lyrics:

Why be afraid if I'm not alone
Though life is never easy the rest in unkown
Up to now for me its been hands against stone
Spent each and every moment
Searching for what to believe

(chorus)
Coming out of the dark, I finally see the light now
It's shinning on me
Coming out of the dark, I know the love that saved me
Your sharing with me

Starting again is part of the plan
And I'll be so much stronger holding your hand
Step by step I'll make it through I know I can
It may not make it easier but I have felt you
Near all the way

(repeat chorus)

Forever, forever I stand on the rock of your love
Forever I'll stand on the rock
Forever, forever I stand on the rock of your love
Love is all it takes, no matter what we face

(chorus out)

PJ, congrats on the chook! He's been getting kind of snippy lately, so you may have to keep a close eye on him. All those pictures of him we and our friends have posted lately have had him preening outrageously.

Y'all have come up with some terrific songs. I don't really have a theme song. Songs I like are "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar (though I like "We Belong," too, Ms. Susan "On The RWR Cover" Seyfarth--yay, you!), "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain" by Reba McEntire, and "Up" by Shania Twain. And Gloria Estefan's "Get On Your Feet."

Louisa, I loved the Cinderella that starred Lesley Ann Warren, and I think that's a wonderful song.

Donna, we splurged and saw Wicked on a trip to NYC. I also think this is a fabulous song. I bought a "defy gravity" shirt at the theater. Six months later, at DragonCon, I saw a woman wearing one in the hotel restaurant.

Speaking of DragonCon, I was also pleased to meet a woman in the coffee shop line who was wearing the twin to my Lois McMaster Bujold "Dendarii Free Mercenaries - Forward Momentum" t-shirt (except Bujold had signed hers). Also not a bad slogan, "Forward Momentum."

I've fallen back on the late Dan Fogelberg's lovely "Part of the Plan" at various times when I've had big disappointments. (Love when you can/Cry when you have to/Be who you must/It's a part of the plan.)

Christie--edits are done? Hooray!

I couldn't possibly pick one song but I did want to add that the book was very interesting and unique.

Minna said...

Here's the rest of the song:

The curtains slide aside and I watch how the light pushes away the shadow which wrapped my soul into the night
even though I wanted to get rid of it
when I was beaten down and no one
could carry me over a deep river
life between the earth and the sky
life brings its light to my fall

and then like a breath of morning breeze
something fills this small room
it finally wakes me up

hunger for life...

I remember the crash. It occurred in Pennsylvania I believe. I remember the photos of them removing her on a stretcher with a head brace. If I recall, wasn't it her husband who discovered her and encouraged her to become a mega star? He's always been her rock, so the connection is easy to see.

Thanks for the back story!

Donna MacMeans said...

PART OF THE PLAN - Great one, Nancy. I've always had a soft spot for Dan Fogelberg. He's had alot of great songs. Loved his AGE OF INNOCENCE album.

One of these days, I'd love to go to DragonCon. Sounds like great fun.

You know - I'm surprised no one has mentione I BELIEVE I CAN FLY as a theme song.

Donna MacMeans said...

PJ - Joan and Nancy will be in Atlanta with you. I'll have to watch for Michael Buble to come to Columbus for a concert. That would be a good one.

Donna MacMeans said...

Catslady - I didn't read the book as in "novel" but I did enjoy the book as in "dialogue on stage." (English can be such a confusing language *g*) I thought it really neat how the writers took a staple like the Wizard of Oz and made the villian the hero with logical explanations for her actions. Great play.

Donna MacMeans said...

Minna - Dang - why don't they make that song in English?

Who knows... maybe somebody will. There are some Finnish songs which have been translated into other languages. But Pave's songs are pretty even if you don't understand the lyrics. From all his songs, this is one of my all time favorites:

I am SO not back from my trip, mentally! Yes, it was the PAN Retreat, not the PRO. I think I'll just crawl back into my hole now.

Very pretty, Minna - That one felt lighter in tone.

Terry - Well, I wasn't going to say anything *g*. They used to have the PAN Retreat speaker also address the general convention the following day. Guess they don't do that anymore. She was pretty good - certainly easy to listen to. I thought her advice about theme songs and throwing away 10 things was interesting --not that I've thrown anything away LOL.

Well, in that song he's singing "would you go with me by the lake, I would dive you a white pearl". It's one of those summertime songs. I have actually heard him sing this song in English, but so far I haven't managed to find it on any cd.

I can't think of any personal "theme songs", although I do think my life has a soundtrack... It would be one of those 5-disk sets though, because there is always music playing around here...
However, I do have a 'playlist' I had to come up with for work, so here it is:
Enigma - Return to Innocence
Daniel Bedingfield - If You're Not the One
Rascal Flatts - My Wish (they played this at a good friend's funeral lately, and it just killed me!)
Baby Bash ft. Frankie J - Suga Suga
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (Hey Oh)

And one that always makes me smile and jump around with the kids is:
O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tea (Remember the "Numa Numa" song?... Love it!!!)

Hey, Enigma! Here's another song from them + a couple of Finnish scaters:

Great topic!

Mine is the Aretha Franklin version of "You got to Accentuate the Positive."

We had a friend who appeared to have an entire soundtrack. Whenever he was around, Led Zeppelin seemed to be playing.

PJ -- sorry you're gonna miss Michael Buble, but I am SOOOO happy that you will be with me :)

I looked at getting tickets when he was in town last year, but the tickets were just too much for me at the time.

KESTREL -- I totally agree with you on the Raschal Flatts song MY WISH. We mixed that into a picture show at my nephew's graduation a couple years ago. It is such a wonderful song.

I arranged for them to play Rascal Flatts "My Wish" at my goddaugher's wedding at the end of my toast.

Hm. Well, LOTS of songs play on the soundtrack of my life. I like "I'm Every Woman" for making an entrance ANYWHERE (the grocery store, the post office, the White House *g*). For submissions? I don't think I've had one for that. But I obviously need one!

I song I've always loved, that always hits that button is Tears For Fears' Everybody Wants To Rule the World:

Welcome to your life
Theres no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

Its my own design
Its my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Theres a room where the light wont find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do Ill be right behind you

So glad weve almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I cant stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you'll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it ?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Not sure it's inspiring, but it makes my soul soar. They may get an award for most random music video ever. *g*

You Tube is like crack! I started out with Tears For Fears, migrated to Echo & The Bunnymen, got sucked into Joy Division. Where does the madness end?!

Caren Crane said...

PJ, I meant to say congrats on the Golden Rooster! You can't let Louisa have him for long, you know. She spoils him rotten!

Caren Crane said...

Apparently, the road I was on led to They Might Be Giants. *g* Two songs that always pump me up:

Birdhouse In Your Soul

and

Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

This is another of my theme songs. It is a great one to listen to when the rejection monster shows up at your door or you just start to doubt if you were meant to do this writing thing. Josh Groban sings it.

Don't Give Up (You Are Loved)

Don’t give up
It’s just the weight of the world
When your heart’s heavy, I
I will lift it for you
Don’t give up
Because you want to be heard
If silence keeps you, I
I will break it for you

Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don’t give up
Because you are loved

Don’t give up
It’s just the hurt
That you hide
When you’re lost inside, I
I’ll be there to find you

Don’t give up
Because you want to burn bright
If darkness blinds you I
I will shine to guide you

Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don’t give up
Because you are loved

You are loved

Don’t give up
It's just the weight of the world

Don't give up
Everyone needs to be heard

You are loved

Sorry to be gone so long - internet was down...again. (Did I mentione the switchover with cable providers - whew!)

Kestrel - Love the idea of life with a soundtrack - wouldn't that be cool - esp. when there's danger or sometime really significant happens and you get the music in the background that says "Hey Bozo - this is important stuff here." I like that. Or violins that come up during THOSE special moments. You could live your life by the soundtrack.

Esri Rose - I'd go with Aretha's RESPECT - when those rejections come in. *g*

Caren - You Tube is the best. I meant we can talk lyrics, but it's so neat to be able to hear the music as well and your right, it is addictive. You listed some great sounds there.

Louisa - Face it - Anything Josh Groban sings is inspirational *g* What an incredible voice! Plus - didn't he debut on Ally McBeal? How circular is that?
