Valentines Fun

by Tawny

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Here we are, once again, at that fabled day of love and romance. Once a year, even though we probably don't recall why, we honor February 14th with red hearts, glittery cards, flowers and chocolates. Oh, there are the less common celebratory gifts; diamonds, sexy lingerie, semi-automatic weapons (yeah, seriously, one year my husband asked for one of these representations of pure romance to celebrate the day. I said no.)

So now, let the Valentine's accolades begin...

Wait!! What's that I hear? (picture me with my hand cupped around my ear, looking inquisitive). Is that a groan? A Valentine's groan?

Why???

Its the holiday of looo-ooove (say it with me now, looo-ooove, really rolling those 'o's' up and down like a teasing lil kid). We're trained young for this holiday, aren't we? I remember back in early gradeschool, taking a simple paper bag, adding colorful cutout hearts and pretty glitter and then :::ta da::: I had a magic bag.

Yes, magic. Because in that bag, I was assured, I would collect lots and lots of love come Valentine's Day!! To my seven-year-old heart, that meant chocolate, of course. (Come to think of it, to my older-than-seven-year-old heart, it means chocolate, too) I remember spending hours, painful hours since my handwriting was atrocious, signing those little paper valentines with cutesy animals saying clever things. Matching up just the right animal to just the right classmate. Agonizing over the perfect candy hearts (chocolate or conversation - oh the choices!). And then... dum da dum... the big day arrived. Thanks to the teacher's rule of 'participation means everyone', all the kids had valentines for all the other kids. So my paper bag was filled. With magic?

Well, in my lil' mind, magic meant my name was spelled right. And the chocolate? Magic chocolate melts in your mouth, but mine was kinda on the ick side. And that maybe, just maybe, my magic bag would have a loving little Valentine in it saying those special words: "Love, your Secret Admirer". Or, you know, anything romantic and sweet. But did it? Nope, never.

My magic Valentine's hopes were dashed.

Sigh... yeah, now I think I understand those groans I heard.

Valentine's expectations, be they good or bad, carry a lot of weight. Magic, love, good chocolate. That's a lot to ask of a day and one lil arrow-toting dude in a diaper.

And those amazingly talented guys in advertising only add to the weight of the day, drawing on all of the romantic hot buttons to sell their merchandise and get us thinking.

And yet, here I am, on still another Valentine's Day, wishing you all the magic of love. And because I'm a big believer in love and laughter going together like chocolate and caramel (mmmmm), how about some fun?

How about we spend the day celebrating by coming up with the cheesiest Valentine's greeting possible? Poetry isn't my strong suit, but I'll try and kick us off:

Roses are red

The stars shine from above

I want Johnny Depp

To be my hunka hunka burnin' love!

There... now that's really REALLY bad, right? My Valentine's challenge to you? Top my lack of talent with YOUR cheesy Valentine greeting.

And at the end of the day, I'll draw one name to win a valentine from me -a copy of any of my books and a box of truffles. The good, melt in your mouth kind. Not the ick kind!!

Tawny, I actually think Valentine's Day (I keep having to stop myself writing VD!) is bigger in the States than here. Mind you, maybe I'm saying that because I spent the day hard at work on my computer and no knights in shining armour rode up to take me out to Paris for a week! Sigh. Where are those KISA when you want them? Maybe they perished of heat exhaustion in their tin outfits - it really is hot here!

OK, I'm always up for corny verse.

Roses are red, violets are purpie
Give me your heart, I'll give you a slurpie!

Anna Campbell said...

Hey, I got a chook for Valentine's Day! My knight in shining armour has turned up after all! Come to me, my fine feathered friend. Let's see if we can plait your chest feathers into the shape of a heart.

Hey, chook? CHOOK!!!

Huh, he ran away. KISAs aren't what they used to be!

Anna
Your knight in shinning armour has arrived enjoy your Valentines Day with him

Tawny

Great poem and I am with Anna I don't think it is as big here as in the States mind you there are lots of people selling flowers on the roads today making a lot of money.

Hubby and I said no pressies this year it really is all too much although I didn't get any chocolate but I bought him some lollies hmmm.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Give me some melt in your mouth chocolate
And you get me

Bad I know

Happy Valentines Day everyone

Have Fun

Cute post Tawny, and I can remember those days in school. We would spend hours just decorating our shoe boxes to collect the Valentine in. In hopes of just getting that one special Valentine from a secret admirer, nope didn't happen here either.

Here's my poem, not to good at this but.

Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
If your not real good
I'll take Johnny from you

Yeah Right!

Anna got the rooster
On the day of love
Now she'll get candy
From a white turtle dove.

Congrats on the rooster Anna, have fun with him.

Tawny said...

Whoa, Virginia... them's fighting words!!!!

Now I ask you, is Johnny stealing any way to celebrate Valentine's Day? Noooooo. No no no.

But... just in case, I'll be good *g* Real Good!!!

Tawny said...

Woot, Foanna!!! Congrats on the NISA in chicken form :-) I wonder how his feathers stand up to all that metal ;-)

So - is a slurpie the same thing there as it is here? Here it's a sweet icy drink *g*

Tawny said...

LOL, you in exchange for chocolate, huh? I love it!!! And that is very, very bad :-D

Helen, hubbie and I aren't doing pressies either. I think lollies are a fun gift, though!

Bwaahaaahaaaaaa....

Fo's getting her goodies!!!

Tawny said...

Fo, I had to tell ya, I'm notorious for writing VD myself. And after a few years of touting Valentine's accolades and getting some pretty heated responses, I've come to realize that this day is about as welcome as the clap to some people *beg*

Janga said...

Roses do fade.
V. Day is looney.
But it’d be my fave day,
If it brought me George Clooney.

I’d keep him busy
From dusk until dawny.
If he grew tired,
I’d read ‘im scenes from Tawny.

Anna Campbell said...

Tawny, yeah, slurpies are icy drinks here too. Hard to get something to rhyme with purple! Hey, loving the poems, everyone, especially the ones praising the rooster!

But Janga, I think yours is my favorite so far!

Tawny said...

Oh yeah, baby!!! Janga that rocks :-)

Now I'm imagining George Clooney starring in a few of those scenes. Even better, the idea that the scenes would, well, un-tire him LOLOL

Whew, is it getting warmer? Love it!!!

Tawny said...

Fo, do you think thats why the original poem we're all massacring so horribly claims the violets are blue instead of purple? A lack of rhyming availability?

And who knew, Slurpie's are world-wide :-) My daughter will be thrilled to know, since they are her favorite food in existence. And yes, she does claim they are food.

PinkPeony said...

Hey Tawny!
We were sent home with a ditto copy (remember the smell of the ditto machine?) list of our classmates names. Our teacher would tape pink or white lunch sacks with our names on them along the chalkboard tray and we were to drop our cards for our classmates into the bags. I didn't want to give the mushy ones to the boys so I sent neutral V-day greetings. I'll never forget this one boy in our class...he didn't bother with names on the envelope. He just wrote "boy" or "girl" on his envelopes and dropped them in the lunch bags. Happy V-day!
My husband hinted that I would be getting a watermelon. Anna...a little coq au vin for V-day dinner?

Tawny said...

ROFLMAO Pink- boy or girl? Oh so in keeping with the spirit of the holiday *g*

And really -a watermelon??? Am I missing something?

PinkPeony said...

(Sighing heavily) One year, he tried to send me a Honey Baked Ham via Fed Ex from NJ but Fed Ex refused it. So he ended up sending me a can of Deviled Ham sandwich spread instead and had lunch delivered for my entire office. I still have the can of deviled ham. He's just weird but a keeper. Beats the ex-b.f. who used to send flowers the day AFTER V-day. He wanted to make sure I really looked forward to them. (Yes, he's going to be a character in a story)

Tawny said...

*g* That is so cute and so sweet!!! I am giggling like crazy over the ham story, and can't wait to hear what happens with the watermelon now :-)

Gotta love a guy with a sense of humor, huh?

I'm with you on the day-after flowers. I hope you give it to him good in the book ;-)

I'd give you the last piece of chocolate from my favorite candy box.

I'd darn all the holes in your holeyest socks.

I'd even hug your mother...and tell her I love her!

Don't think you can leave me...or ever deceive me!

You're programmed into my heart like a navigation system.

When my heart beats, it's you in its rhythm : )

I hope you don't mind me "putting my own spin" on your original poem, Tawny!

Roses are red,
As is some wine.
I love Johnny Depp
And think he’s divine.

I think I should drink
Some wine as a toast.
Here’s to my Johnny;
I think he’s “the most!”

Some might say
He’s a hunk of burnin’ love,
But I must say
He’s a gift from God above!

(Personally, I would insert “George Clooney” instead of Johnny Depp, but then, that’s just me -- and Janga!)

Happy Valentine’s Day, Tawny!

I truly hated Valentine's day as a child. Always expectations, always disappointment. I like it a lot better now.

Okay, poetry is not my forte, no form of writing is but just for you Tawny I will give it a shot.

Hooray, hooray, all give a cheer,
Valentine's day is finally here,
What's this I see, (I feel a tear),
The chocolate I got was icky I fear.

Anna Sugden said...

I see Valentine's Day has brought out the poet in you all! Great poems so far!

We're like the Aussies, Tawny - it wasn't that big over here. We never got classmates Valentine's. I don't even remember as a child getting Valentine's except when we lived in the US for a while. Now, it's getting bigger, but still not the thing it is over there.

Okay, cheesy poem time

Red roses are boring
You've no hope of scoring
If you give them to me
I'll say, now way, honey!

Daisies, tulips and mums
Now we're more than chums ;)
But if you want nookie
You'll get rid of that chookie!

I'm still waiting on a sexy vampire hunk (Or Gerard Butler.. maybe him as a sexy vampire hunt?!) to come sweep me off my feet. Though, frankly, he better friggin' hurry!

Alright, I'm up for the challenge, let's see what I can come up with here...

Blood is red
Bruises are blue
Bite me, vampire..
And I'll bite you, too!

Okay, it's not really sappy, but I'm in a vampire-y mood, so it's the best I can do. Though, maybe, to a vampire, that is the ultimate sappy verse.

Heh, so much for trying!

Darling post, Tawny. Doesn't Valentine's Day bring lots of potential disasters and disappointments? I asked Dr. Big what he gave me for V-Day. He says, "I'm still thinking about it."

Sigh.

Here goes:

Pansies are blue and grass is green

And nary a cupidity heart can be seen

Just give me a fellow who's fond of house cleaning

And I'll think about Clooney and do all the dreaming.

limecello said...

lol I'm always up for calling it VDay, Anna- which is close enough.
Tawny, lol, I don't think I can top that! Although Helen and Virginia have some clever ones - and getting into it with you ;)

Happy VDay, everyone! And also, today is the Chinese/Lunar New Year. Extra celebration! Yay!

We never do anything for V-day as a rule, but my favorite V-day present ever was my Kahr K-9, wrapped up in a chocolate box. (That's a handgun, for you who don't know) I'd wanted it for a long time, so I was excited. It's a good story. I'll tell it sometime here on the blog.

So Tawny, your hubby is not the only one who wants firearms for V-day--and every other holiday. (grin) (Uh...that would be my husband who wants weapons EVERY holiday--sometimes I want something else)

I hadn't asked for the firearm for that day, and wasn't expecting it. I'd just wanted it for about four years and he used that occasion to wrap it up and make it special.

Unknown said...

Whoa, Virginia C, that's pretty good!

And cheesy. (grin)

LOl - These poems are GREAT! Loving them.

I must say - it's a good day to be an American if Valentine's Day isn't celebrated with all the hoops and whistles. In the midst of all this snow and cold, I NEED this day of celebration. I remember all those kid's valentines - and the making of "mailboxes" to receive them. So many of our mothers must have shopped at the same stores as my box was always filled with a lot of duplicates. Can't say I was disappointed with the haul. I just enjoyed the lollypops and candies attached to the cards. Hey - you can complain when opening the cards meant less time in math!

Okay - here's my poem. See if you can guess what my sweeties gave me for Valentine's Day (grin)

Roses are red
Cherries are ripe
and decorate the corset
I'll be wearing tonight!

Hi, everyone! Happy Valentine's Day! Hope everyone's doing well.

Bad Valentine's Day poetry, hm? Ok, here goes:

I don't need roses, cards or candy;
What you've got in those jeans is just fine and dandy!

Take off your shirt and sit down for a spell;
No need to worry, I won't kiss and tell!

Pecs made of steel and abs of stone;
No need to spend Valentine's Day alone!

Oh wait, it's a dream? Dang, that's not fair;
The scent of love and chocolate led me straight to the lair!

No Johnny, no George, no hunks to be seen?
I'll go back to sleep, and continue to dream.

Anna Campbell said...

So for this V-day, I’m happy with my man pick
He cooks (and in between sports) we’ll watch a chick flick :D

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

One of my favorite valentines for a boyfriend who broke up with me the night before was:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you...

But the roses are rotten,
The violets are dead,
The sugar is lumpy,
And so is your head!

For the nice stuff,

Ten years ago on valentines day,
We met online, we had plenty to say.

We chatted for hours, our phone bills grew.
You were goofy yet sweet, after two years I knew.

You suprised me one morning and gave me a ring.
Then three years later we did our "I do" thing.

Now five years married, life just gets better.
It's hard to believe we've had 10 years together.

Written today by one6ylady(at)aol(dot)com

Just for the record, my hubby and I were introduced by a friend and chatten online for the first time on 2/12/2000, we got engaged 2/12/2002, we got married 2/12/2005, and we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary and 10 years together 2 days ago.

Awww, Nancy, isn't it tough when they move past that stage and into the more grown up world of boy/girl-dom?

But at least he had a good smile for the memory :-D

Fo, did the rooster ever come out from under the bed? Did he make Valentines better in ANY way for you today?

LOL Linda, I love love love the poem, but did you HAVE to remind me of that woman who really has dibs on my Johnny? ;-)

You can sure rock the verses!!!

One6Lady, wow! I'm not sure which I'm more taken with, your lovely love story or your fab poetry :-)

I'm giggling at the fat head line, but think the long distance love poem totally rocks them all!!

Kate :-D Yay you on finishing. And even better for the reading and fluffing portions - you definitely work some magic in those pages!!! So excited about the next book... of course, I'm still excited about the current book since its sitting on my nightstand waiting ;-)

Tawny, sadly, the rooster did nothing but cry into his beer about the hen that got away (she of the egg he still clutches to his feathery bosom) so basically he wasn't a chook, he was a boar!

Awwww, Fo. Now I'm feeling blue for the bird :-( Maybe if I share my good chocolates with him? Oh wait, we don't know where he'll be next, do we.

Well I hope he perks up and is a lot more entertaining for whoever he visits next!!!
