Share & Share Alike

by Susan Sey

This is going to be a quick one because I'm in the process of adoring my new nephew, & it's time consuming. That new baby smell is mesmerizing. Hours could go by while I inspect his teeny weeny fingernails. He is coming home today so I confess right up front I will be busy. We have business, this child & I, so it's likely I will be scarce. Sorry.

But I did want to mention this odd bit of coincidence: Robbie was born July 2. My mother's birthday is July 1. My mother is from Ireland, and St. Patrick's Day is a big holiday for our family. My latest niece (the equally adorable Claire) arrived the day after St. Patrick's Day. My oldest child was born on my parents' 38th wedding anniversary, & my sister shares a wedding anniversary with my parents-in-law.

My birthday is August 29, the same day as Hurricane Katrina. Another of my sisters' birthdays is September 11. My father's birthday is the day after Christmas, a birthday he shares with the new baby's father, my brother-in-law.

This seems like a lot of coincidence. We're not an extraordinarily large family, so odds don't favor this kind of overlap. Are we just lucky? Or do all families have this kind of share & share alike mentality for important dates?

How about you? Are there any big dates & seasons of celebration in your family? What are they? Do you make a point of giving each person their own celebration, or do you go in for the One Big Party?

I can't think of any huge seasons of clumped celebrations, but my sons have birthdays within a month of each other, so despite 5 years in difference between their ages, they got a combined party last year ;) I know! I'm such a meeeeaaan mommy! :)

Just wanted to add that we did have smaller just-the-family celebrating to mark their individual dates, but we did have a combined bigger shindig--it's hard to muster to energy to plan two completely separate events, though I know that many families do make the effort to do just that :)

My sister and I always had the same birthday party growing up, as ours are 1 week (and three years) apart. :P I felt cheated because I stopped getting birthday parties the same time she did, so I missed out on three years :P
In a way it's "friend" birthday season in June. Or at least, growing up. For the core group, there was a birthday on June 1, 16, 21, 28... and then the trickling July 3. And what's "more special" is a number of those birthdays are sibling ones. The girl whose birthday is on the 16th - her little brother's birthday is July 23, so not quite the same. And friends trickling in and out, there were birthdays on June 6, 12, 19, 22, 23, 24, and 27th as well. So... sometimes there was a big party.

Congrats on the GR, Fedora :D

Nice Nab Fichen -

About the only birthday clumping that I can think of is that my father's birthday was Dec. 21, my sister Dec.31 and my mother's Jan. 16. Neither of my parents made a big thing of their birthdays, but we celebrate my sister's every year (grin).

However, Dorchester paranormal romance author, Elyza Hendricks and I share the same birthday - month, day, and year! We discovered that when she moved to Ohio and joined my local RWA chapter. That was sort of freaky.

My brother & I were both born in May a couple weeks apart, most of the rest of my family is in July or September all really close together. We never had huge parties for our birthdays, instead we get a special Sunday where we get to pick the meal and cake - whatever you want. This has caused problems in the past as my nephew only wanted deserts but my dad said that it is his day so we had deserts for dinner. It has become a tradition and is something we all look forward to each year.

Congratulations on the new baby!

Well done Fedora although he may be quiet today after having a great day with Janga and her grandkids yesterday have fun with him.

Have a great day with that new nephew Susan I agree there is nothing nicer than a new born baby.

Have Fun

I share a birthday with my brother ... that is probably because we are twins LOL and my grandaughter's is 3 days later, my grandaughter and I share a family BBQ as we live near each other... My husband shares a birthday with my Aunt and a friend and my son shares a birthday with a neice.... not any big parties except #0 ones as we are scattered around the world

Hi, Susan.

My birthday is Sept. 11. People always give a little pause whenever I say that now. My dad's birthday is 18days after mine and my BIL's mother's b-day is the day after my dad's. My sister's wedding anniversary is Sept. 12.

My sister Kris was born a day after my maternal grandfather's b-day and 3 days before Christmas. On Christmas Day, the nurse brought her to my mom in a large stocking! Her husband's birthday is December 5 and my niece's birthday is December 12.

My mom's birthday is July 7; my niece's is the 6th and my nephew's is the 13th---4 years and 1 week apart. My grandma's birthday was July 24.

My sister Sandy's wedding anniversary is June 22 and their daughter's birthday is also that day, born on their 7th anniversary.

My BIL is a Valentine baby.

I only have 2 sisters and 3 nieces and a nephew. Cool, huh?

Hey, flchen1! Congrats on the GR! And he likes 'em strict, so have fun! :-)

I'm one of four girls, myself, and three of us have birthdays within three weeks (8/29, 9/11, 9/16). When we were kids my mom threw us each a party but now that we're grown ups, we just call it the Season of Cake. Hardly matters who's being honored--it's all about the cake.

Susan Sey said...

flchen1 also wrote: t's hard to muster to energy to plan two completely separate events, though I know that many families do make the effort to do just that :)

Oh, jeez, I know. I have two kids & their birthdays are exactly six months apart so I couldn't GET it any easier, right? And yet I only do ONE birthday party a year. The kid on the off year gets a family celebration because I just don't have the wherewithal to throw two actual birthday parties in one calendar year.

Susan Sey said...

limecello wrote: In a way it's "friend" birthday season in June.

Oh my gosh, lime, that's a TON of birthdays in June! What did you do in terms of parties & presents?? I mean, after a while it had to get prohibitively expensive to buy/party for every birthday. Was there just a general celebration, parties every weekend, random cakes?

My mom adores birthdays (god bless her) and if I'm at home anywhere in the vicinity of my birthday, there's cake. I get the feeling maybe she just likes cake. :-)

Which is fine with me.

I'll bet you DO celebrate your sister's every year! What a fun birthday, new years eve!

My dad & BIL are the day after
Christmas, which probably was a bummer when they were little but now it's a blast. Everybody has the day after Christmas off, & everybody's looking to keep the party rolling. So when we invite people over, they actually come. ALL of them. It's a riot. I'll bet it's the same for your sister.

What a great dad! Desserts for dinner! ("Happy birthday, kid! Appetizer? Have a cream puff!") I love it! But I'm not going to tell my kids this is an option. They're sneaky children, always on the lookout for a loop hole. They'll figure it out on their own soon enough.

And thanks on the baby congrats, Melanie! I'm so looking forward to this baby coming home for I can scoop him up & sniff off all the new baby smell!

And I will enjoy that baby, Helen. :-) I'll keep you all posted as to his each & every wriggle, coo & snuggle.

How fun for you & your granddaughter to share a bday & a BBQ! My mom & dad love sharing an anniversary with my oldest--who happens to be their first grandbaby. It's was one wild celebration those first couple shared parties. :-)

Oh, Deb, I know. My sister who also has a 9/11 birthday says she might just pick herself out a random other day of the year to celebrate because she'll never have a normal birthday again. It's too bad.

But then again, she's smack in the middle of Cake Season in our family so she could have a day two week either way.

Have you found an alternate way/day to celebrate your 9/11 bday?

And wow on all the overlap in your average sized family! I'm impressed!

My cousins from two separate sisters are just a few days apart. There is a small period of time where they are all the same age, then it jumps to a year. Oldest has a birthday August 28, her brother's is August 13, and born in the same year is another cousin August 10. From the 13th to 27th they are the same age.

My birthday is Jan 29, exes birthday was Feb 08, his daughter Feb 18, my mother Feb 19th, my son was born Mar. 01, should have been Feb 28 but he didn't want to come out. By the way I was supposed to be born around my mother's birthday but I got in a hurry.

When I met my BF we discovered that two of his granddaughters and my granddaughter were born just days apart. His oldest was May 20, mine is May 22 and his youngest is May 25.

We don't celebrate any of them together, not even his two granddaughters. Maybe when they are older but not at the moment.

I'm the odd one out in my family - my parents anniversary was Nov 15, my sisters birthday is Nov 16th and my niece's is Nov 19th. My nephew is Christmas Eve and we aways make a show of giving him separate presents. My mum is October and my dad is January.

My birthday is August 5th. *g*

Interesting that my BFF (April 17th) and my Hubby (April 18th) are so close together.

July 4th is a big one on my family. My brother's birthday and my son's is the 4th. One of my nieces was almost born on the 4th but she officially came on the 5th. We used to all go to my sister's house because she lives on the edge of a park with great fireworks. We'd celebrate all three birthdays there with my family and 3 cakes. Okay, you need 3 cakes with my family.

That is really the only big grouping we have, which is unusual given the size of my family. Eight sister and brothers and 23 nieces and nephews.

That's so cool, Dianna. It's a ton of overlap but kids really love to feel special, even if they have to share their big day. I love the community celebrations now that I'm an adult but as a kid, I was so glad my mom went in for each & every birthday.

And sheesh, that's a TON of overlap in your extended family, Dianna! Wow!

Fedora, congrats on snagging the GR. He is likely to want naps after the late-night fireworks and being chased by the grands at Janga's yesterday!

Susan, the overlaps are odd, aren't they? We definitely have clusters of birthdays in my family. My brother and I are five days apart. My mother and her father and brother all had birthdays within three weeks. My younger sister has two daughters, one born on New Year's Eve and one on St. Patrick's Day. My youngest daughter, my oldest niece and my only nephew all have birthdays the same week.

My younger sister and her husband have birthdays 6 days apart. He shares his birthday with his twin brother and another brother. My oldest sister and her SO have birthdays two weeks apart. My next older sister and her husband have birthdays within a week of each other.

My son and older daughter have birthdays exactly three weeks apart. One of my cousins and I are exactly 6 weeks apart. My brother and her brother are exactly 6 weeks apart. My grandmother and husband have birthdays a mere 5 days apart.

When I go to buy a round of birthday cards, it almost breaks the bank! My birthday often falls on Mother's Day and my younger sister's often falls on Father's Day, so it makes card-buying extra expensive. I'm tired just thinking about it!

Congratulations on your new nephew, Susan. I hope you enjoy every delicious baby moment!

Caren Crane said...

Susan, I also meant to say that birthdays are a big deal in my family. We rarely have combined parties, although we have on occasion had them. Inevitably, we also end up having separate parties on the actual birthdays. When my birthday falls on Mother's Day, we have two completely separate celebrations. I will not stand for being ripped off!

Janga said...

The birth of a new baby is the best celebration of all, Susan.

July is the month with the most celebrations for me. My maternal grandmother, my father, my sister, one grand, two cousins, two life-long friends, another close friend, and I all have July birthdays. My cousins' and my sister's birthdays are July 4, 5, and 7, so when we were growing up, we always combined the big family celebration of the 4th with a joint birthday celebration for them. We still do that on a smaller scale for my sister's birthday, but I'll take her out to lunch or dinner on her birthday. When we were in hs, my two old friends and I, who had birthdays on July 23, 24, and 25, had memorable joint parties several years. :)

Add two grands with June 29 and 30 birthdays and another born in early August to the July birthdays and throw in more wedding anniversaries than I can remember without checking the calendar, and I have a six-week period every summer that rivals Christmas in the number of celebrations--and the wear on my checkbook.

Pissenlit said...

Wow! That's a whole lot of coincidence!

One of my first cousins once removed and I share the same birthday. Two of my other first cousins once removed share the same birthday. My brother was born on Mother's Day and another one of my second cousins was born on Boxing Day(her mum went into labour on Christmas). I think that's about it. For the most part, my family isn't big on celebrating birthdays with everyone(to be fair, it's a big family) with the exception of one of my first cousins once removed who invites everyone to her kids' birthdays. Growing up, I always had to share my birthday party with one of my first cousins whose birthday was half a month away from mine...I totally felt cheated. :)

AS well you should! I feel a personal birthday is a right, something that maybe ought to be in the constitution or something. I don't object to a joint party but why would you ever pass up the opportunity to have multiple cakes at a party? Chocolate, vanilla, carrot, german chocolate, angel food, confetti, red velvet...

Why limit yourself?? More cake!

Fedora, congrats on the rooster!

Susan, congratulations on the new arrival. Babies are just fascinating.

My niece and my father shared July 11, and we used to have joint celebrations with separate cakes.

My mom's birthday was the day before mine, and my nephew's was a week after mine, so we'd do one party, two cakes (my mom declined one).

The dh and his sister share a birthday two years apart, which is also the birthday of a friend of mine. The dh's mom made two cakes and had two parties.

July 1 is the birthday of a friend of mine and was the birthday of one of our dogs. The dog doesn't get cake. Not officially, anyway.

Heading out today to find Money, Honey!

See, now this is how it should be done. I'm cool with one party but every birthday girl/boy should have her own cake. And they should get to pick their flavor.

Smelling new babies, huh?

Doesn't that usually kick off ovulation and dusting off the 'ole crib?

In my immediate family, the only similarity is that we all had "odd" number birthdays. My Daddy the 9th, Mom the 15th, me the 13th and bro the 5th.

I grew up with a girl who shared, exactly one year to the day her March birthday.

And I have 2 little fella and two friends whose birthdays are Sept 10,11,12,13

As to 9/11 birthdays. Certainly the first few years it was harsh reminder BUT as I told my friend with that birthday...embrace it...celebrate the LIFE that it represents!

We have busy birthday months. My youngest daughter, niece, nephew and mom all have March birthdays (my nephew's is the day before my mom's)and my FIL's was in March as well.

One of my brother's bday is at the end of May, then a few days later in June is my older sister's, a week later is a niece, a week after that is a nephew, a day later another niece, a day later my other brother and the next day is his daughter's *g*

My sister and MIL share a birthday and we have a nephew who shares a birthday with his daughter. Oh, we also have a nephew on my husband's side who shares the birthday with my brother and one of my husband's sisters and a nephew share a birthday and we have a niece and a nephew (twins) who were born on Halloween.

I like the way you think! My cousin was born half a month after me so our parties only ever had the one cake as the number of candles weren't a problem! Once, our double birthday party turned into a triple with another cousin who shared my birthday month but he was older and so he got his own cake with a different number of candles on it. It should've been 3 cakes, i tell ya! :D

But, yeah, that new baby smell is seductive. I keep reminding myself that they're adorable, yes, but they don't sleep. It's a drawback. :-)

Yes Susan, that is odd. Other than my Birthday being 5 days before my mothers, and my middle daughter's being two days, (techincally a little over 36 hours) after my father's, no one else shares birthdays in our family.

Names and my husband's family on the other hand is another matter.

My husband's father was Joe. My husband's oldest sister Sue married a man from Japan, whose nickname was Joe. Hubby's oldest brother is named Mick, and her second son's nickname was Mick. My husband Jim, married me, Sue, and his sister, Pattie married another man named Jim... So I had considered naming my son, Samuel Patrick, (after his two aunts, my sister Sami and hubby's sister Pattie), but for some reason hubby nixed that idea!
