End Of A Love Affair

by Beth

The other day I was on iTunes when I discovered the most magical of all those magic buttons: Songs for only 69 cents! I ordered a bunch including Cherry, Cherry by Neil Diamond, Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve and Ants Marching by Dave Matthews Band.

There were many songs from the 60s and 70s but when I asked my husband if he wanted me to download Sister Golden Hair by America, (a song we've been known to just start singing - yes, we often break into songs at our house. Up until a few years ago, my kids thought every family burst into song during conversations *g*) he laughed and told me he'd heard that song so often during the 70s, he'd prefer not to hear it again.

Unless we're singing it, of course *g*

All of which got me thinking about those songs I once loved but now...well...if I hear them now, I tend to clap my hands over my ears and run from the room hoping beyond hope the tune won't get stuck in my head. You know the ones - songs that were overplayed on the radio or on MTV or VH1. Songs we played over and over and OVER again when we were teenagers - which for me would be The Police's Synchronicity, Heart's Bad Animals and Def Leppard's Pyromania :-)

And since we all know how much I love a good list, I thought today I'd give you my:

Top Five Songs I Used to Love But Now Wish I Never Had to Hear Again!

1. Hotel California by The Eagles.

2. Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Oh, how I love Led Zeppelin! Adore them! Worship them, even! And I used to love this song. Until I listened to it about a bazillion times in Jr. High School *sigh*

3. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I blame this one on Wayne's World *g* Now, the only time I can listen to this song is when I'm watching the hilarious parody video my son and his friends made of when Wayne, Garth and their friends drive around town :-)

4. Sweet Child O' Mind by Guns 'n Roses.

5. Jeremy by Pearl Jam. Great song. Great band. I've just heard it too many times.

So, there you have it. A very short list *g* All are great songs, all are songs I once couldn't get enough of...until I had enough of them ;-)

Do you have any songs you used to love but have heard so many times you can't listen to them again?

Well done Mariska

Beth

I don't think there are any songs that I don't like to listen too any more I actually love to hear songs from my past they bring back so many memories for me. When I hear an older song that I loved as a teenager I can close my eyes and picture what was going on around me when it was in "The Top 40" and even songs that my grandparents used to play on the old 78's I love listening to them.

I gotta say I love that list you have and am happy to listen to them anytime LOL

Have Fun
Helen

well done mariska have a good day with GR

Hi Beth, I am like Helen I don't think there are any songs that I don't like to hear from my past.... they all bring back memories of one kind or another

Anna Campbell said...

Mariska, I think you'll be singing the Chicken Dance!

Beth, your post made me laugh. It's funny, I have quite a few songs that fit into that category but I'll pick five that occur off the top of my head...

1. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Which is tragic as I thought it was a masterpiece when I was 14!

2. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. Another tragedy as I've always loved it but it seems to be on constant rotation on the video channels on my TV and I've just got sick of it - sorry, Cyndi!

3. Horse with No Name by America. Again, used to love it!

4. Turning Japanese by the Vapours. Did these guys make it big in the States? They were huge here in 1979 or 1980 and I used to adore the song. And then someone told me what it was really about!

5. The Only Way is Up by Yazz. Sadly in my mid-20s, I thought the aerobics video, the bike pants and the boppy beat were the height of cool. But then of course, I wasn't the height of cool so I should have known I was wrong!

Honorable mention - Walk Like an Egyptian by the Bangles. Tut, Tut, Tut.

Great post, Beth! I don't know that I have songs that I used to love that I hate now ... I pretty much still dislike those I used to dislike then!

But, the ones I dislike for overplay (then and now) are:

Hello by Lionel Richie - not helped by being associated with my parents' divorce

Blue Monday by New Order - the girl in the room next to me played this over and over, so I get antsy whenever I hear that familiar opening drumbeat!

Everything I do etc by Bryan Adams - love everything else by him, but that was way overplayed.

My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion - not a fan of Titanic either (sorry, Michael Hague!)

The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush *ick*

Oh and Anne Murray's You Needed Me.

We used to have a bunch of no.1 hits over here that were not only one hit wonders but so awful I can't imagine why anyone would buy them ... Things like Lena Martell's One Day at a Time and the St Winifred School Choir There's No-one Quite Like Grandma. I bet there's a few people looking to ditch those records!

Anna Sugden said...

I LOVED the Vapours, Anna - went to see them in concert! I didn't know there was anything hidden in what they were singing - so had to go and look it up - who knew?! LOL

I'm afraid Bohemian Rhapsody is still one of my all-time favourite songs.

Gillian Layne said...

The radio (at least our local radio station) has the uncanny ability to kill any popular song by playing it over and over (and over) again. I'm a big fan of public radio now.

Television commercials ruin a lot of older songs.

Deb Marlowe said...

LOL--great post Beth!

Hmm, for me it would be Celebration by Kool and the Gang. Ugh. Too many times.

And anything by REO Speedwagon, who I thought were sorta lame back in the day, but had a cousin who played them Endlessly...

Beth Andrews said...

Good morning!

Congrats on nabbing the rooster, Mariska! I'm sure he'd be happy to sign with you today *g*

Beth Andrews said...

Hey, Helen! Isn't it wonderful how a song can transport you back in time? Every time I hear a song from Grease, Rick Springfield or The Bee Gees, it's like I'm back in grade school *g*

And I'm always glad to hear Jessie's Girl or Grease Lightning :-)

Beth Andrews said...

Hi, Barb! There are a few songs I've heard over and over again that I still listen to just because of the memories *g* Such as Tub Thumping and I Love Rock And Roll which both remind me of when my kids were little :-)

Andrea said...

Hi, Beth!

Yes, there are songs that I used to like but don't care for anymore, but of course, I can't remember any right this second. My problem is when I hear a song I like, I have a tendency to play it over and over. And over. Granted, I enjoy it at the time, but can easily become sick of it. I just need to limit myself. That's what I love about hitting "shuffle" on my iPod. :)

Louisa Cornell said...

Yay Mariska !! Perhaps you can get the GR to join you in a singalong!

I agree that many good songs are soured for me by their use in commercials. Some are really well done, but others are, for lack of a better word - TACKY!

My Heart Will Go On was great when Titanic first came out, but it has been played so much now I just can't stand it.

Like Gillian I keep my car radio on NPR so I am not subjected to the latest "hit" song on a mind-numbing loop. It's strange, but I never tire of tunes by Mozart or Beethoven or Bach or Tchaikovsky. What does that say about our present day musicians and their compositions?

People in our area tend to listen to country music. If I never hear She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy again it will be too soon. And This Kiss (Shudder!)

Daryl Wood Gerber a.k.a. Avery Aames said...

I'm LOL. Girls Just Want to Have Fun! falls right up there. And as much as I love her voice, I don't want to ever hear I Honestly Love You again, by Olivia Newton John.

However, I'll still listen to anything by Barry Gibbs.

I think the number one song that I can't stand to hear anymore is "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. Drives me batty.

Beth Andrews said...

LOL, Anna! I agree with your list (though I haven't heard The Only Way Is Up) and yes, I've often heard Turning Japanese - and had heard the rumor behind it :-)

Isn't it a shame when overplaying a song makes you turn from loving it to never wanting to hear it again? I wonder if musicians have this problem with their own songs since they have to perform them so often. Especially their more popular ones that fans can't get enough of!

Beth Andrews said...

Everything I do etc by Bryan Adams - love everything else by him, but that was way overplayed

LOL! Anna, it's like we're twins *g* I used to love this song and was a huge Bryan Adams fan but they just played it over. And over. And over. Sort of like Whitney's I Will Always Love You
:-)

And I agree about Titantic! But I love Michael Hauge ;-)

Beth Andrews said...

Hey, Gillian. That's my problem, too. On the other hand, we also have a local radio station that plays songs I've never heard of and never want to hear again *g* Wish they'd find a happy medium!

Isn't it funny how many popular songs are used in commercials now? Even songs that you'd never associate with the product, like Led Zeppelin in the Cadillac commercial :-)

Beth Andrews said...

And anything by REO Speedwagon, who I thought were sorta lame back in the day, but had a cousin who played them Endlessly...

Hey, Deb! LOL, on REO! My son has been known to start singing Riding The Storm Out. It's something he and his buddies started a few years ago. We're all so very weird here :-)

And you're bringing back the memories with Kool and the Gang! Also can't help but remember Lionel Richie's Dancing On the Ceiling *g* That song was everywhere!

Beth Andrews said...

Andrea, I'm the same way! I tend to re-listen to whichever song is my favorite at the moment until I never want to hear it again *g* So, in many cases, I only have myself to blame!

Luckily, with iTunes, I keep discovering even more great songs :-)

Beth Andrews said...

If I never hear She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy again it will be too soon. And This Kiss (Shudder!)

LOL, Louisa! And yet, I could listen to Brad Paisley/Dolly Parton's When I Get Where I'm Going over and over and over again. Even if it does make me weepy *g*

Some songs just stand up better than others :-)

Loucinda McGary aka Aunty Cindy said...

Congrats on the GR, Mariska!

Great topic, Beth! I must agree about Hotel California and Stairway to Heaven. If I NEVER hear either of them again, it will be too soon! Bohemian Rhapsody was close there for awhile, but I haven't heard it in so long that I'd actually kind of enjoy it. Same with My Sharona by the Knack. It was played TO DEATH, but I heard it for the first time last week and found myself humming along!

I can only think of 3 more songs I'd add to the list and one is strictly because of personal bad experience -- We've Only Just Begun. That was the song played and sung at my wedding to the ex and I can't stand to hear it. :-(

--Living La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin. It was fun and catchy the first 97 times I heard it, but not so much now.

--Hot Hot Hot... Is that even the name of it? It seems to be 90% of the lyrics. Every cruise I go on, they inevitably play this song, REPEATEDLY. Enough already!

And I agree with Louisa, I NEVER get tired of hearing the classical composers.

Anna, the Brits (and also the Aussies) have a real thing for novelty songs. I remember seeing a high falutin' doco on chart success and the guy reckons it's because the music hall tradition still lives on the UK and its former colonies in a way it doesn't in the States. He looked at number ones in Britain and said you could say over half of them were novelty songs.

Do you remember Joe Dolce and Shudduppayaface? Agadoo? The Pub With No Beer? I think all were huge number ones in both Australia and Britain and I don't think any of them made an inroad in the States.

Actually I was watching another show (clearly I need to get out more) - do you know the brilliant Madness only had one hit in America? Our House! They were a staple on the charts in the 80s here and I know they were in Britain too. In fact, we've got a whole stack of ads that use their songs. It Must Be Love is on high rotation in a disposable nappies/diapers ad, for example.

I always find these cultural differences really interesting!

By the way, sorry for spoiling Turning Japanese! ;-)

Beth, for your viewing pleasure:

Noticed her backing band was called the Plastic Population. Says it all, really!

She's actually Dutch. I wonder if the song wasn't a hit in the States. I was watching one of those MTV 100 hits of the 80s or whatevers the other day and was surprised at how many songs I didn't know because they were big in the States but not Australia. That's where I picked up the Madness fact!

Anna, I LOVE Blue Monday!!!!

Christie Kelley said...

Fun post, Beth. I loved at your list because I still love Hotel California and Bohemian Rhapsody. Although, I don't hear them on the radio that much. Actually, I don't listen to anything on the radio in my car right now. The darn thing isn't working. It's driving me and the kids crazy.

I do have to agree with AC on My Sharona by the Knack. I heard it just the other day and it made me cringe.

Another one for me is Roxanne by The Cars. Just don't need to hear that one again.

Donna MacMeans said...

What a fun post, Beth. Of course, all those songs are vying to stick in my brain. As soon as one starts, I read someone else's suggestion and then that song is stuck.

The first song that came to my mind was Horse with No Name (or Horsey NoName as my sister calls it). I'm glad I'm not alone in wishing that one would just fall off the oldies playlist. I'm with AC on Hot,Hot,Hot! It must be an obligatory play in all tourist locations south of the border. I was getting pretty tired of any song by Bob Marley after my stay in Jamaica.

Funny how I never seem to tire of the Beatles tunes - even though I've heard those forever. I wonder what makes the difference between loved oldie and dreaded oldie?

OMG.... Anna I was gonna say Girls just wanna have fun...LOL

we used to roller skate to it all the time and I got so sick of hearing it...urgh!
Then as life would have it...then funny part...Veggie Tales (Of course) redid it as Gourds Just want to have fun. I can't help but laugh as my 3yr old sings it at the top of her lungs all around the house!!!

I’m with Gillian on hating what commercials have done to great memories of some old favorites. I’d be happy never to hear the five listed below again:

Don’t Stop Believing—Journey
Stairway to Heaven--Led Zeppelin
Brown Eyed Girl--Van Morrison
Hotel California—Eagles
Love Shack—B52s

Beth, your post makes me newly thankful for my iPod.

I can't really think of any songs that I loved but don't really care for now. I am sure there are some, but I am seriously drawing a blank. I usually tend to like something either way before it becomes popular or when it is dying out. I hate popular radio. I do try to stay away from the radio stations. They play everything out within days. I don't know why they think that everyone wants to hear the newest Miley Cyrus song 8 times in one hour. I mean really?

Landra said...

Well, I am a little younger but the songs you mentioned that you can't stand to listen to I love to listen to them. I was raised on classic rock and became a devoted Boston fan at the age of 6. I love all the songs and especially love "Party". I call it my birthday song.

The ones I can't stand are the pop tunes that hummed their way into my life in my early teens. Spice Girls "Wannabe" is one of them and the Backstreet Boys "Quit playing games with my heart". I am also exceedingly tired of "Macarena". Who knew that the one hit wonder would shun me away so many years later.

But I am a huge fan of the classics. I also love the Police. Synchronicity was my favorite album and I am happy to announce that I know all the songs by heart.
Great Post! It was fun to delve into my memories.

P.S. You liked Huey Lewis and the News too, right?

Nancy said...

Beth, what a fun post!

I once loved "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Cannot listen to it now, not because I heard it so much but because its incredibly schmaltzy, maudlin sentiments now chafe. I think it's mostly a song for teenaged girls to love.

"Leavin' on a Jet Plane," Peter, Paul & Mary version, wore out its welcome.

"Seventeen" by Janis Ian--the sentiments just don't speak to me anymore. Maybe because 17 is so far back, it isn't even IN the rear-view mirror anymore.

Neil Diamond "America," from the remake of The Jazz Singer, also wore out its welcome

"The Horse." I have no idea who recorded it, but I think every high school band in America played it, and I would be happy never to hear it again.

Mariska, congrats on the bird!

jo robertson said...

High five, Mariska!

Great post, Beth. Unfortunately (for my family), once I love a song I NEVER unlove it. I'm crazy that way.

But there are songs that were popular when I was younger that I HATED then and HATE now LOL.

"Itsy Witsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" comes to mind only because they made a commercial using it and I ground my teeth down to the bone every time it came on.

PinkPeony said...

Hi Beth!

Reading everyone's comments put a grin on my face.

My top five:

Celebration by Kool & The Gang. Ugh. I've been to so many wedding receptions where the gelled or mullet-haired DJ's played this song and there's always some woman wearing a chiffon pup tent on the dance floor shaking parts that shouldn't move independently.

Betty Davis Eyes...gives me a headache.

The Macarena Song...

You Light Up My Life...need I say more?

Anything by Phil Collins or Michael Bolton makes me reach for the Tylenol.

Sorry, AC, but I love We've Only Just Begun...Nancy..I love Leaving on a Jet Plane and At Seventeen!

Beth Andrews said...

Hey, Avery! Oh, I remember that Oliva Newton John song! Yes, it got quite a bit of airplay, didn't it? How about Physical? Although I think Glee did a version of that which was pretty funny *g*

Thanks for stopping by!

I think the number one song that I can't stand to hear anymore is "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. Drives me batty.

LOL, Trish! That song drove me batty when it came out but it was so fun *g* And my mom loved that song! It's the only "popular" song I can remember her liking :-)

Beth Andrews said...

AC, I agree with your picks! It seems as if those 'catchy' songs are the ones that wear out their welcomes first *g*

I don't blame you for not wanting to hear We've Only Just Begun.

I love the song Broken Wings except it takes me right back to Jr. High with all the teenage angst I was dealing with then so I just can't listen to it!

LOL, Cath! I'm a child of the 80s (well, a teen of the 80s *g*) and I love the music!

Mostly :-)

And there are plenty of recent songs that I started out loving until they were played endlessly. Must have something to do with my attention span *g*

Anna Sugden said...

Funnily enough, Anna - Joe Dolce was one I nearly put down! Do you know he still tours?! Oh yes *groan* Agadoo.

Ah the wonderful Madness - who I saw not long ago in concert (and yes, Suggs is still as yummy as ever). Now you're talking.

I remember many of the punk-ish era bands only made it to the indy clubs in the US, when I lived there. I used to go to one in downtown DC that was fab (the 9:30 club?). I also remember seeing Adam and the Ants at the Cellar Door.

And while I was over on YouTube I played Rhythm Is A Dancer *g* This is why I try to stay off that site! It's addicting!

hrdwrkdmom aka Dianna said...

Not so many songs now that bother me. I like oldies (50's-60's) and still pretty much like them all. I also like country and there were a couple of those that wore me out for a while but I am over it. For a short time Jolene and Romeo would send me screaming from the room.

Beth Andrews said...

I do have to agree with AC on My Sharona by the Knack. I heard it just the other day and it made me cringe

Donna, this is another song my husband mentioned as one he wished he never had to hear again *g*

:-) Long live the classics!!

Hey, Danielle. I agree. I often wonder who decides what songs are played and how they make that decision. I'm sure there's a whole process behind it that I'll never know - and probably don't want to know *g*

Beth Andrews said...

P.S. You liked Huey Lewis and the News too, right?

Hey, Slush! Of course I liked Huey Lewis and the News *g* And I loved their videos!

Beth Andrews said...

"Seventeen" by Janis Ian--the sentiments just don't speak to me anymore. Maybe because 17 is so far back, it isn't even IN the rear-view mirror anymore.

LOL, Nancy! When I was a teen, the band Wagner did a song called Seventeen about his love for a teenager. At the time it didn't bother me but now I'm ready to call the cops on him *g*

My favorite version of Bohemian Rhapsody is by the Muppets on youtube.

Actually, any song that has been overused in commercials is an automatic "no more!" like the Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye" which will always be for Target in my mind.

Anna, I do remember "Turning Japanese" by the Vapours and also the rather bizarre video. What was with those short, short bangs on those boys? Ew. At least they managed to get a real Japanese woman dressed as a geisha for part of the video.

One song that i can't bear to listen to is 'How Deep is Your Love' by Bee Gees. My hubby always playing this over and over again. And i'm so 'sick' when i listen to it :)

i used to like this song, but if in one hour, you just listen to this song over and over again, who won't be sick about that ? lol

Oh Beth, Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton's When I Get Where I'm Going is a wonderful song! My brother and I sang it to close my last recital at my Mom's church. I sang a sacred music program of Bach, Mozart, Schubert and several other "classical" composers, spirituals and then ended the program with the duet with my brother. It really is a lovely song and so far I am not sick of it!

Christine Wells said...

Hi Beth! Fun topic--I know what you mean about those songs you used to love but can't listen to any more. ABBA ranks high on my list--they were being revived (maybe not even for the first time?) at about the time I started going to clubs and the songs were fun to dance to but now I've had enough. Nirvana is another one (not that I used to play them much myself but they were everywhere at one time) and remember that band that thought they were as big as the Beatles and now I can't even remember their name? They sang about a wonder wall or something? If I could only remember...

Otherwise, I probably have a pretty high tolerance threshold for songs I used to love. Even some songs I hated that were played a lot are loaded with nostalgia for me these days. Sigh!

Congrats, Mariska!

Beth Andrews said...

"Hello, Goodbye" which will always be for Target in my mind.

Me too, Sheree! I guess advertisers know what they're doing since certain jingles or songs can evoke such strong memories for us all *g*

Beth Andrews said...

I can only imagine how beautiful taht was, Louisa! It's such a wonderful song!

Beth Andrews said...

LOL, Christine! Back when my kids were younger, there was a group that did covers of all of ABBA's songs, the A-Teens? Or something like that. Anyway, my girls LOVED them. Played that CD over and over and over again *g*

They sang about a wonder wall or something? If I could only remember

Wasn't that Oasis? I actually like Wonderwall *g* But I'd had no idea they were that big. I actually hadn't realized they had hit songs other than Wonderwall.
