Quick Top Ten - Animation

by Anna Sugden

Christine's post about animated films and a recent trip to the cinema where they previewed Rio and Tangled got me thinking!

I'm a big fan of Disney movies. The Aristocats, Lady & the Tramp, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid etc etc etc Actually, I'm a fan of animation/cartoons - LOVE Studio Ghibli too. If you've never seen Howl's Moving Castle, you must!

I also really enjoy animation by legends such as Nick Park/Aardman - Wallace and Gromit - and Pixar (Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, etc) and Dreamworks (Shrek etc). And, of course, Pingu.

I adore Tove Janssen's Moomins though I never saw any of the animated ones.

I enjoyed all those Saturday morning cartoons (or, in my childhood, early afternoon cartoons) like Wacky Races, Scooby Doo and others like Camberwick Green and Mary, Mungo and Midge. Then, of course there are the classics like Tom & Jerry, Bugs and pals, Road Runner and Sylvester and Tweety. I also liked the super heroes - Batman et al.

Can't resist the old puppet programs too like Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90. When I was a kid there were also animated shorts just before the news like Magic Roundabout and HR Puffenstuff.

I haven't got into shows like The Simpsons or South Park or King of the Hill or any of those more adult humour cartoons - most aren't really my kind of humour, though the odd episode can crack me up.

So, here's your Quick Top 10 question - name your Top 10 animation movies, cartoons or shows.

Mine are:

Lady and the Tramp
The Aristocats
Howl's Moving Castle
Happy Feet
Wallace & Gromit
Aardman's Creature Comforts (including the TV ads)
Finding Nemo
Sleeping Beauty
Cinderella
Spirited Away

With a special honorary place for Pingu!

The Jungle Book (the Bear Necessities!)
Thunderbirds
Adventures of the Stingray (a precursor to Thunderbirds)
Rocket Robin Hood

- all Wallace & Gromit movies
- Pixar films (well, Ratatouille not so much) and shorts (Boundin' is great! - heliotrope)
- Fantasia (the best collection of music videos ever)
- Mulan - props to Disney for trying to Disney-fy an old Chinese poem (from either the 6th or the 12th century)
- various Hayao Miyazaki films: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle (though I like the book better), Ponyo, The Castle of Caglioso, Whisper of the Heart
- Cowboy Bebop - space anime with a depressing ending
- InuYasha - the TV series and the 3rd and 4th movies
- Rurouni Kenshin - the TV series not the movie which depressed the bejabbers out of me
- Ghost in the Shell series which my boyfriend still watches
- FLCL - so, so very weird

Yes, many of the titles on my list are Japanese anime, but I did watch that a lot a few years back.

Margay, how could I forget 101 Dalmations? I had the Little Golden Book adaptation, and my grandfather and I read it over and over. It was one of the first movies I bought to watch with the boy.

At the point where Jasper and Horace come to the door to steal the puppies, they knock, and Nanny bustles to the door. The boy cried, "No, nanny! Don't let 'em in! They're bad'uns."

And indeed they were.

Anna -

Funny you should post this. I was just commenting to my husband the other day that I just can't get into the animated TV shows and haven't any interest anymore in paying to see animated films in the theaters. When the kids were little - no problem- I really enjoyed them. But now - not so much.

However, that said - there's some great animated films out there. My list:

Fantasia
Enchanted (partly animated)
Lady and the Tramp
Bambi
Finding Nemo
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (loved the characterization of the Dwarfs)
An American Tale
The Little Mermaid
Toy Story
Rocky and Bullwinkle (loved that show)

Sleeping Beauty
Princess Mononoke
Tom & Jerry
Animaniacs
Batman
X-Men [both of these are the "older" ones from the 90s. Heh. Older.]
WINNIE THE POOH

Anna Sugden said...

Hi all! Sorry I'm late, but it's been a busy day - been to a football game!

Jane - how cool that you win the chook on a day when my Devils win too! ;)

I love Kiki's Delivery Service - another great one from Studio Ghibli!

Anna Sugden said...

Ah Anna - I've got to replace all my Disney videos with DVD's! It does give me another chance to see them all again. I do enjoy Finding Nemo - some great catchphrases, like 'Mine! Mine! Mine!"

How did I know you'd like Yogi?!

Anna Sugden said...

Ooh I forgot about Babar, Laurie! Loved him.

How nice that you can share them with your grandkids. Though I'm far too young to have any yet, I look forward to that day *g*. In the meantime, I'll practice with popcorn and sing-alongs!

Anna Sugden said...

Ahh Sheree - how interesting to see an anime fan here too. My hubby loves them - from Tokyo Godfathers to Steamboy.

Actually, I know there are a few others, but usually I'm one of the few who have a soft spot for the Studio Ghibli stuff and Miyazaki in particular.

I got some for Christmas so will enjoy watching them.

Anna Sugden said...

I love Fantasia too, Anna. Educational and fun.

There's also a fabulous short called Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land which is also fun.

Anna Sugden said...

Shrek cracks me up too, Helen. I bet you have a lot of fun watching DVD's with your grandbabies!

Beauty and the Beast is another greta one!

Anna Sugden said...

Hey Janga - you mentioned two I got for Christmas - Grave of the Fireflies and Whisper of the Heart. I'm hoping for My Neighbour Tortoro for my birthday. *g*

Anna Sugden said...

I've never seen Lilo and Stitch, Gillina. Though I have seen the toys around. Will have to check them out.

One of the reasons I'd love to read Japanese is I'd love to get hold of the Manga romances they have.

Anna Sugden said...

The Jungle Book is such a fun sing-a-long, isn't it Dianna?!

Sounds like we have very similar tastes!

Anna Sugden said...

OMG Joanie - I LOVE The Jetsons! How could I forget them?! They were so cool in their little futuristic world.

Anna Sugden said...

You're right, Suz - Robin Williams was pure genius as the genie *g* in Aladdin.

Sorry about the Spider Pig thing - I don't understand that as I've never heard it (or perhaps I shouldn't have admitted that!)

Sheree said...

Tawny, Beauty and the Beat is the name of an album by the Go-Go's in the 1980's. Not punk rock but really fun.

Anna Sugden said...

Oh yes, Margay - 101 Dalmations! I liked the live action film too. Glenn Close over-acting was so worth it!

I never saw Pocahantas. I don't know why, but I thought her story was sad and so didn't want a sad animation. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Anna Sugden said...

I've never seen Animaniacs, Nancy - will have to check them/it out!

Somehow, I knew you'd have a special superheroes series in your top ten!

Anna Sugden said...

Oh no! BJ! Not The Smurfs! Akk!! Now I have that horrid song on the brain!!

There is a cartoon called the Snorks? Is that a favourite of our Duchesse Jeanne, I wonder?! LOL

Anna Sugden said...

Some interesting ones I haven't heard of, LilMissMolly - will have to look up Treasure Planet and Brave Little Toaster!

Anna Sugden said...

Donna - you are the reason I have Enchanted in my collection! I remember you telling me about it and I loved the sound of it, so dashed out and bought it! You're right - it's awesome!

Oh yes! Snow White - love those dwarves!

Anna Sugden said...

Aargh - not you too Hellion. Those bloody little blue creatures!!

I haven't managed to see Up yet, but a lot of people have raved about it, so will be sure not to miss it.

Anna Sugden said...

Hi Lime - good to see you back.

Hey, you're in good company. Disney - who work in partnership with Studio Ghibli - pretty much own me too!

Anna Sugden said...

Oh Tawny - you reminded me of another one I love - Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

I've never seen The Nightmare before Christmas or The Year Without Santa Claus.

BTW I saw Johnny Depp in 3-d this week and thought of you!

Anna Sugden said...

LOL Sheree - we're showing our age! I was thinking, I'm sure I've heard of that punk band Beauty and the Beats ... that was my era! ... and there you are mentioning the GoGos!

I love animated movies. Me and my boyfriend are big fans of animated movies. Normally they win out when we go to the movies. I don't think that I am able to pick my top ten. I like so many. I will say my absolute favorite is Sleeping Beauty.
I am in the same boat with cartoons. I love them. I have so many favorites from my childhood. Even now I still like them. My favorite cartoon is the Smurfs.

Love your top 10 posts, Anna. Sorry I'm late to the party, been gone all day.

Hmmm, I do enjoy Disney animated shows, but my all-time, absolute fave is BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Love what they did with the story. For the musical part, I really like LITTLE MERMAID, and for overall pow! factor, it's THE LION KING.

Actually, I love them all, and for Pixar my favorite is Toy Story. There's something so timeless about the themes in that story.

Anna Sugden said...

I was never a Captain Scarlet fan either Pissenlit - although I knew the theme song *g*.

I'm writing down all these animations I've never heard of ... Quest for Camelot.

Anna Sugden said...

On no! Not you too, Danielle!

You make up for it with your love of animation though *g*. I must admit that Tangled is next on my list and Hubby seems quite keen to see it too.

Anna Sugden said...

Oh yes, Trish! I love The Little Mermaid too *sigh*. See, it can't just be a top ten, can it?!

Anna Sugden said...

Hmm - I forgot about Hercules - that was great too. Never seen Phineas and Ferb - though I did see Spongebob once with my niece and nephew.

I can see you liking Bugs, Beth - he's your sense of humour!

Anna Sugden said...

They make me smile too, Louisa!

Chicken Run! That was so funny!

My cats aren't too fussed by TV - though they do seem to prefer hockey and football (no laughing, Banditas!) - I think it's the movement of the ball/puck.

Anna Sugden said...

Hi Fedora! Yay that you're another Miyazaki fan!

Anna Sugden said...

No worries, Jo - I was gone all day too - though I guess my day is several hours ahead of you *g*.

I think the themes in all the Disney movies are timeless. But, you're right - Lion King is especially powerful with the Circle of Life.

I know a lot of people knock them, but I like the feel-good factor in them.

Jonia's cut said...

Monsters Inc.
Les Triplettes de Belleville
